NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS WORTH DANCING ABOUT

Announcement posted by HOTA 06 Jul 2018

HOTA has a fantastic line up of performers scheduled for the Dancing on the Green : NAIDOC Cultural Celebration next Saturday 14 July
Celebrate the diversity of NAIDOC week at a special Dancing on the Green event.  This dance, music and cultural event forms part of the City of Gold Coast’s NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Locals are invited to this family friendly event being held at HOTA’s spectacular outdoor stage.

Artisan markets led by our local artists including Jarjum Space, Artisan products, weaving demonstrations and Wearable Arts showcase from the Intertwined, Festival 2018 performance. The markets will commence at 2pm and from 3pm visitors will enjoy performances from Thelma Plum, Leah Flanagan and The Spirit of Churaki.

In acknowledgment of NAIDOC’s ‘Because of her, we can!’ theme, Leah Flanagan will perform her special arrangement of a poem called ‘Churaki’ written by local Aboriginal community elder Aunty Joyce Summers.

From beautiful ballads to rocking surf tunes, laid back oceanic beats and the ancient sounds of Aboriginal language, this performance honours a rich lineage of saltwater people, a spirit of generosity and a deep connection to country through music and song.

Joinging Leah and the local Spirit of Churaki cast is Thelma Plum. After casting a spell on all with her debut EP, ‘Rosie’ and spending last summer on Triple J, Thelma has been taking over the airwaves, guesting on Golden Features ‘No One’ and sweetening the fire on the Horrowshow/Urthboy track 'Any Other Name’.

For people wanting to make it a full day at HOTA, why not arrive from 10am and join in with the iconic interpretive dance moves of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights.

The annual Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever is back on the Gold Coast for its second year.

Following the success of the inaugural Gold Coast event that saw more than 80 ‘Kates’ participating in this glorious community flash mob event, visitors to HOTA can don their wigs and red dresses and register to be a part of a truly unique global movement.

The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever is an event held at locations around the world where participants recreate the music video for musician Kate Bush's 1978 song Wuthering Heights.

The event's inspiration was a 2013 event by a group called "Shambush!" held in Brighton, United Kingdom which attempted to set a world record for the most number of people dressed as Kate Bush in one place.
