Small Business Summit to Host Australian Regulators’ Super Session

Announcement posted by COSBOA 15 Aug 2018

Session to discuss emerging issues in taxation, competition, banking and finance regulation for small business in Australia

Media Release: 15 August 2018

Later this month, the Vodafone National Small Business Summit will host a super regulators session – the only one of its kind in Australia – bringing together Australia’s regulators and policy shapers in one room for a robust discussion on emerging issues for small business.

The session to be held on Friday 31 August in Sydney, will hear from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Commissioner Chris Jordan AO, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chair Rod Sims and Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Commissioner John Price.
As the voice for small business, the session will be chaired by Australian Small Business and Family Enterprises Ombudsman (ASBFEO), Kate Carnell.

ATO Commissioner Chris Jordan will talk about the ATO’s engagement and collaboration with small business. While ACCC Chair Rod Sims, will speak about their focus on energy, broadband, net economy and financial services in 2018. Completing the trio of regulators, ASIC Commissioner John Price will share his insights into banking and finance, with the recently signed Banking Code of Practice certain to be a hot topic for discussion.

Not afraid of a debate, Small Business advocate and Summit host, Peter Strong, CEO, Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA), commented that this session is about having some serious dialogue about how the regulators are working with small businesses. “It’s an opportunity to ask the regulators the hard questions.”

“We hope that the Summit will help develop ways small and large businesses, regulators, and the Government can collaborate on policy, so we can empower the Australian economy in the future,” said Mr Strong.

The Vodafone National Small Business Summit 2018 is themed ‘Power and the People’ and is the premier small business event to discuss and debate new and existing policies throughout Australia. The Summit brings together the decision makers and regulators of small business, to discuss the challenges, issues and changes to policies. The Vodafone National Small Business Summit is being held at Swissôtel Sydney, 30-31 August 2018.
