Free Trade Day a Hit for Those In Need

Announcement posted by Books4Tradies 28 Aug 2018

When tradie Ryan Wilson approached lifetime school buddy Ben Shipley about helping some folks in need by donating “tradie hours,” no one could have predicted the inspiring success about to unfold.

“I told him to sleep on it,” says Ben, “but of course he didn’t. He put a post up on Facebook, which went crazy in a day.” The rest, as they say, is history. Free Trade Day was  born. The brilliant pair's idea reached the ears of network producers on Sunrise, and the rest of the media followed. From conception to running 48 tradies completed over  $50,000 worth of work for those that needed a helping hand. Pretty impressive right?

The dynamic duo grew to a team including Yvette Wilson, Jess Farrugia, Scott Anderson and a whole lot of big hearted tradies around Australia, held on the So why did they do it?

“The whole thing is really about the kindness of tradies, looking for a way to give back to those who might have fallen on hard times that need a helping hand. We want to help people, and do you know the best bit? We have so many tradespeople wanting to get on board and help."

According to the Free Trade Day Website, many elderly people alone in their homes have limited financial resources as well as locals struggling to complete essential maintenance and repairs to their homes, jeopardizing their safety and well-being. Held on the 29th August this year, many of these people’s lives are about to change.

When Books4Tradies CEO Genaya Hutchinson heard about Ben and Ryan, she was keen to help spread the word.

“When we heard about the day- we knew we had to get our marketing team onto it and spread the word across the internet. I mean how can you NOT support something so great? Everyday tradies putting their working hours to pitch in for those in need, you don’t get much more Australian than that” says Genaya. “Often they can be the ones doing it tough, but in my experience, the typical "tradie" and their need to "fix things" doesn't just come down to plaster and nails, it is an intrinsic part of the nature of the men and women we encounter working in the trade industry.”
