Boost Mobile Got Game As Esports Added to Sponsorship Strategy

Announcement posted by Boost Mobile Australia 29 Aug 2018

Raft of new sponsorships in esports will see Boost Mobile partner with Melbourne Esports Open (MEO), Supercars E-Series and The Chiefs Esports Club.
SYDNEY, Australia, Wednesday 29th August 2018 – Boost Mobile, the world’s number one youth telco brand, has today announced exciting new sponsorships in the fast-evolving world of esports. Complementing current properties in action sports, surf, skate and music, the prepaid provider has signed on to be the Official Telco Partner of the Melbourne Esports Open, and Naming Rights Sponsor for the Supercars E-Series. To add to its sporting influencers and ambassadors that already include some of the biggest names in action sport, they have also signed as a Telco Partner of Australia’s premier esports team, The Chiefs Esports Club.

This news comes off the back of a recent study by market research firm YouGov, which revealed that just under four million Australians are watching esports, including 23% of all people aged between 18 – 24 in Australia, with younger age groups the most interested to watch esports in the future.[1] The global esports audience will reach 380 million in 2018, made up of 165 million esports enthusiasts and 215 million occasional viewers.[2] Games such as Fortnite have also seen a surge in popularity, with this title jumping from 45 million to 125 million players between January and June 2018.[3]

“We are excited about the future of esports and believe this is a fast-evolving and dynamic area, a new form of entertainment, where data and a great network have an important role to play. Esports and the broader gaming community is an area that appeals to our customers who are digital natives, and we are delighted to both show our support and use this platform to further build our brand,” said Jason Haynes, General Manager of Boost Mobile Australia.

“After spending some time within the esports community, it is clear that there is a great fit between Boost Mobile and the world of pro-gaming. It involves much more than just playing, but also uploading and sharing content, watching others play, and live streaming tournaments. This is where it becomes incredibly important to have a reliable 4G mobile network.”

Official Telco Partner of Melbourne Esports Open & Naming Rights Partner of Supercars E-Series
Presented by TEG Live, ESL and Fairfax Events & Entertainment, the inaugural Melbourne Esports Open (MEO) this September will feature Fortnite, the League of Legends Oceanic Pro League Finals and the Overwatch Contenders Australia Season 2 Finals. As the Official Telco Partner, Boost Mobile will have a strong presence at the event including an activation area.

Boost Mobile holds an existing Supercars sponsorship of the Mobil 1 Boost Mobile Racing team, and its expansion into esports will also see the prepaid provider further leverage this relationship as it becomes the naming rights partner for the Supercars E-Series, with the details of the Series to be announced by Supercars on Friday.

At the MEO Boost Mobile activation area, players and fans will be able to get up close and personal with some of the Mobil 1 Boost Mobile Supercar drivers and check out a GT3 McLaren. There is also opportunity to win a Hot Lap in a Supercar, alongside a range of other free giveaways.

“With the support of Boost Mobile, this Series will engage a new generation of fans. The ability to replicate our world class on-track competition in the virtual world makes esports a brilliant platform for engaging new and existing fans of Supercars alike.” said Sean Seamer, Supercars CEO.

Managing Director of Fairfax Events & Entertainment, Martin Jolly, welcomed the announcement of Boost Mobile becoming the official telco partner of the inaugural MEO.

"It was important for us to secure commercial partners with credibility in the esports gaming community. Boost has strong roots in youth sports and this partnership appears to be a perfect natural extension."

MEO will take place on the 1st and 2nd September 2018 at Rod Laver Arena.

Supporting Partner of Oceanic Esports Team, The Chiefs
Boost Mobile will also become a supporting partner for one of the world’s best pro-gaming teams, and arguably the premier Australian esports team, The Chiefs. Based in Sydney, the club has delivered four championships in the League of Legends Oceanic Pro League, has represented Australia at the Intel Extreme Masters competition four times, and is the Oceanic representation at the International Rocket League Championship (RLCS) and ELEAGUE for Rocket League.

“Boost Mobile are proud to support one of the biggest teams in esports and are excited at what the future holds as we work closely with The Chiefs on future collaborations,” said Jason Haynes.

"The Chiefs are incredibly stoked for the opportunity to work with one of Australia's leading telecommunications brands! Boost have a shared vision to deliver the best and most competitive plans for their customers. We're privileged to be able to collaborate and share everything that Boost have to offer with our fans," said Frank Li, CEO of The Chiefs Esports Club.

“The Chiefs will be competing at one of Australia's largest ever esports events, the Melbourne Esports Open! Having qualified for our 7th Oceanic Pro League Grand Final in League of Legends, as well as taking the 1st seed in the eXTREMESLAND CS:GO competition, the MEO will be the perfect place to kick off our new and exciting partnership with Boost."

Boost Mobile also has standing relationships with the Mobil 1 Boost Mobile Racing Team, the World Surf League, and has in the past year been involved in the Bondi Bowl-a-Rama, and the Aus X Open.
