Tired of cauliflower rice… shirataki rice, and other “rice” alternatives?

Are you trying to stick to a low carb diet, but miss a bowl of curry with rice, or chicken and rice?

We’ve created a lower carb rice that has 60% less carbs than brown rice or white rice.

It also has four times the amount of protein – that’s 300% more – which is why we called it P300 Protein Rice.

It’s also very high in fibre, giving 40% of your recommended fibre intake, which is great for gut health and for keeping you fuller for longer.

Low carb, high protein diets are all the buzz – and they’re gaining more traction and popularity as people are getting great results – but they’re not always easy to stick to.

“We make it easy by making products that are simple swaps to bread, pizza, pancakes, cookies, muffins, carrot cake, banana bread – and now rice,” The Protein Bread Co. Co-Founder Luke Hopkins says.

“This product gives us another way to help people lower their carb intake and increase their protein to help them in their personal health and fitness goals,” Luke says.

P300 Protein Rice is a perfect substitute to rice for fried rice, curries, stir fries, burrito bowls, poke bowls, coconut rice, risotto, sushi, and more – and makes meal prep really easy.

We’ve used kibbled lupin as our main ingredient, which is a nutritional powerhouse. Read our latest blog post about lupin.

Why we used a blend of lupin, brown rice and black rice

Wild rice has less carbs and 3 times more fibre than white rice, while still giving the texture of rice. We included brown rice because it helps the overall product maintain the texture of rice, and is also a high fibre, low GI rice.

“Lupin is the real hero of the product, which is low in carbs, high in protein and high in fibre,” Luke says.

Why is lupin so great?

Lupin is a little legume that has been deemed a “superfood” because of its amazing nutritional profile. It’s a really rich source of natural plant protein and dietary fibre, which helps to keep you fuller for longer, plus it’s a great source of prebiotic fibre for a healthy gut.

Lupin is also gluten free – like all our other ingredients – and has only 4 grams of digestible carbs per 100g which makes it low carb and very low GI. Lupin actually has the lowest GI of any commonly consumed grains or legumes, which is great for a slow, sustained release of energy.

Lupin also has a high bio-availability of essential nutrients, and a high mineral content of calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron.

It has probably been given “superfood” status because it has more protein than quinoa, more dietary fibre than oats, more antioxidants than berries, more potassium than bananas, and more iron than kale.

It gets its yellow colour from carotenoids, which are antioxidants that have been shown to have protective health benefits, including cancer-fighting properties.

Studies show that lupin:

  • Increases satiety (suppresses appetite by increasing the feeling of fullness) which in turn lowers energy intake.

  • Improves glucose metabolism by improving both blood glucose and insulin responses and reducing blood sugar spikes.

  • Reduces hypertension and improves blood pressure, which is great for heart health.

  • Improves gut health with pre-biotic fibre that feeds good bacteria in the gut.

  • Contains a healthy dose of omega 3s with an ideal ratio of more omega 3 to omega 6 (about 1:4)
