Netflix: How a “crazy idea” became a billion-dollar company

Netflix co-founder Marc Randolph reveals how a “crazy idea” grew from nothing into a digital juggernaut with over 130 million customers worldwide.

Marc Randolph, founding CEO of Netflix, built a business he describes as a “crazy idea” into a market disruptor worth billions. He wants to tell you how he did it. Find out when he speaks in person for one night only in Sydney and Melbourne on THURSDAY 20 and MONDAY 24 September.

“Sometime in the early morning hours of April 14th, 1998, the Netflix site went live for the first time,” Randolph once said. “We lasted about [six] hours before the site crashed for the first of many (many!) times that morning.

“By that night we had just over 100 customers. Just over three years later we celebrated our 500,000th subscriber,” he said. Today, Netflix is a global business phenomenon with over 130 million customers worldwide.

The unlikely story behind Netflix highlights how a handful of dreamers created the company that eventually brought down Blockbuster. Randolph will reveal the details of his story live at two unique events in Sydney and Melbourne as a guest of Australia’s largest startup and growth conference, StartCon, part of the Freelancer.com family.

“Marc has founded more than half a dozen successful startups across his 40-year entrepreneurial career,” Freelancer.com CEO Matt Barrie said. “He mentors hundreds of new entrepreneurs, invests in many tech ventures and understands how failure can be a springboard for success. He’s got the goods, and we’re very proud to be bringing him to Australia.”

Marc Randolph will be speaking in person for one night only at the State Theatre Sydney  on Thursday 20th September and at the Melbourne Town Hall on Monday September 24th. TICKETS FOR BOTH EVENTS AVAILABLE FROM TICKETMASTER
