'Much Ado About Nothing' plus music, film, food and fun
THE 12TH ANNUAL 4MBS BRISBANE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

In the parks

The 4MBS Brisbane Shakespeare Festival is the only Shakespeare festival in the world run by a radio station, spanning three weekends 22 September – 7 October 2018. In its 12th year, our featured Shakespeare play is Much Ado About Nothing which we will bring to three outdoor locations for FREE performances in the parks – Sandgate (23 Sep), Gasworks Newstead (30 Sep) and at the newly opened Seven Hills Theatre (7 Oct) over the school holidays.

Much Ado About Nothing is a romantic comedy with two love stories intertwined, full of wit and humour. Director Jan Black says, “I love the idea of revealing to the audience, this collision of ideals between the Elizabethan age and the 21st century. Beatrice, our feisty, feminist, modern heroine rails against society’s expectations of her sex but finally finds a match with Benedick, a partnership of equals.”

An outstanding cast of young professionals have been assembled with Gemma Willing as Beatrice and Sam Young as Benedick in this effervescent production. Audiences will also be treated to an original Shakespeare song by The Beamish Boys.

Pre-performance festivities include swordplay demonstrations by Prima Spada School of Fence, music (Sandgate), sausage sizzles (Sandgate and Seven Hills) and free facepainting for the kids (Sandgate and Seven Hills).

Festival Founder Gary Thorpe OAM says, “4MBS aims to make the great classics accessible to everyone no matter where they live. Our Queensland weather is perfect for outdoor performances so bring a rug and relax while a brilliant cast of professional Qld actors bring to life one of the great classic comedies.”

In the libraries

This family friendly festival also features Kids’ Classic Shakespeare, interactive storytelling by local actors for the littlies in the Sandgate (Sat 22 Sep, 11am) and Bulimba (Sat 6 Oct, 11am) Libraries.

At the movies

You can also see the Royal Shakespeare Company live on the big screen in their production of The Merry Wives of Windsor at the recently opened Dendy Cinemas Coorparoo.
