Malaysian PM The Hon Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to address World Chinese Economic Forum in KL

Announcement posted by Joe Perri & Asociates 21 Sep 2018

Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Michael Yeoh, Chairman, Organising Committee of the 2018 World Chinese Economic Forum (WCEF) and President of the International Strategy Institute (ISI) has confirmed that Malaysian Prime Minister The Hon Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will deliver the opening keynote address for this year’s stellar two day event in Kuala Lumpur.

The Forum will be held Friday – Saturday, 9 – 10 November at the Palace of the Golden Horses hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The theme for the 2018 WCEF is Towards a common future: Enhancing new opportunities in a changing world and the program comprises an outstanding array of speakers including world leading captains of industry, former heads of state, current and past ministers, trade and business experts.

Commenting further on the announcement, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Michael Yeoh said it was fitting that Malaysia hosted this year’s event as 2018 celebrates the 44th anniversary of Malaysia China diplomatic relations.  “Over the past 44 years, China-Malaysia relations have continued to grow and strengthen with the two nations becoming strategic partners with high-level mutual trust”.

Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Michael Yeoh added, “The WCEF is an international flagship event that also provides a platform and bridge for strengthening and building connectivity and business linkages between SE Asia, Europe and China”.

In addition, the Forum promotes global and regional dialogue on the emergence of China as the world’s second largest economy.  It also brings together the global Chinese diaspora and promotes entrepreneurship and innovation through business networking and sharing of knowledge and best practices.

A key topic on the agenda of the 2018 WCEF is The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that is reshaping global trade and connecting people to prosperity and growth.

“The BRI illustrates the transformative geopolitical implications of China’s rise”, said Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Michael Yeoh.

“Despite its changing contours and the fact that it partly recycles pre-existing plans, this series of major infrastructure and development projects designed to connect Eurasian regions together is a coherent enterprise of unprecedented scale: $4 trillion of promised investments in 65 countries representing 70% of the world’s population, 55% of its GNP, and 75% of its energy reserves”.

Amongst the many questions that will be addressed at the 2018 Forum include – How can firms best position themselves to seize the ever-widening range of BRI investment opportunities? What are the trends in funding BRI projects? What are the main mechanisms to protect your investment in infrastructure projects in key BRI countries? How will the BRI reshape global trade? What’s next for BRI?

Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Michael Yeoh concluded, “I am confident the 2018 WCEF in Kuala Lumpur will be an immense success bringing together many eager delegates from around the globe to participate in a program of international speakers and China experts of the highest calibre providing visionary keynotes, insightful panel discussions and roundtables”.
