Sydney, Australia – 31 October 2018 -- The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), the peak member body for the ICT industry, undertook an 11-day trade delegation across the US with the Minister for Human Services and Digital Transformation, the Hon. Michael Keenan, and 23 AIIA members and industry delegates*, representing startups, SMEs and large multi-nationals earlier this month. Other key delegates included CEO of the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) Randall Brugeaud, Acting CIO for the Department of Human Services, Charles McHardie AM, Ms. Kishwar Rahman, General Manager of Policy and Advocacy for the AIIA and Ben Mason also from AIIA.

The delegation travelled from the West to the East coast in the US and visited Seattle, San Francisco (Silicon Valley), New York and Washington DC. The collaboration between the Department of Human Services, the Digital Transformation Agency and, the AIIA resulted in a program that enabled delegates to meet with world-leading technology companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, IBM, Cisco, Infosys, Qlik, WIPRO, Singtel Innov8 and Oracle to share insights on best practice in digital transformation. The delegates also attended think tanks such as the World Economic Forum and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, as well as startup incubators at Berkley SkyDeck and the Australian Landing Pad showcasing innovative Australian technology startup companies.

Ms. Rahman noted how reassuringly advanced the Australian government is when it comes to digitisation of government services, in comparison to the US.

John Paitaridis, Chair of the AIIA, stated, “The AIIA is pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in this trade delegation. I am confident that spending 11 days with a group of like-minded business people will lead Australian companies to greater collaboration relating to government digitisation.

“While drawing on insights and learnings from some of the world’s best, AIIA members identified the need to recognise and embrace the innovation and technological advancement happening in our own backyard and do more to retain talent.”

Following the US delegation, KPMG and Itree, a 100% Australian owned SME based in Wollongong, NSW, are currently exploring opportunities to work together.

“From an agency perspective, the challenge will be to maintain the collaborative spirit achieved during this trip across suppliers in support of delivering future government outcomes”, added Paitaridis.
