Snap Appliance raises the bar for midrange storage in Australia and New Zealand with the introduction of the Snap Server 4500

Announcement posted by Snap Appliance, Inc 09 Sep 2003

Outperforms competitive NAS devices from Dell, HP, Iomega by up to 327%
Snap Appliance, the world leader in network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, today announced availability in Australia and New Zealand of the Snap Server 4500, a departmental NAS system that delivers cost-effective storage in a 1U form factor. Available in three capacities: 480GB, 720GB and 1TB, the Snap Server 4500 provides simple, cross-platform file sharing and backup for enterprise departments, workgroup, and remote offices. It is also ideal for data-intensive vertical industries, including government, education, life sciences, oil and gas, and entertainment.
The Snap Server 4500 is powered by the Intel Pentium 4 processor to offer some of the fastest performance in the 1U NAS space. This results in lower workgroup storage costs and higher return-on-investment for end users. The 4500 supports Active Directory Service (ADS), UNIX Network Information Service (NIS), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and either network or local backup for simple management in any environment.
The 4500s Linux-based GuardianOS offers an enterprise-class feature set typically found in more expensive solutions. For backup and recovery, the 4500 includes Snapshot technology to provide consistent, point-in-time copies of data without administrator intervention or time-consuming restores from tape. Data replication is enabled by server-to-server (S2S) synchronisation software, which allows one or more Snap Servers to synchronise content with other Snap Servers for fast disaster recovery. Integrating award-winning eTrust Antivirus software from Computer Associates, the 4500 is the first NAS product in its class to provide lifetime protection against virtually all forms of costly virus attacks. Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, RAID protection and hot swappable disk drives contribute to high reliability of this system.
Recent Independent testing by VeriTest, a division of Lionbridge Technologies Inc, concluded that the Snap Server 4500 outperformed competitive NAS devices from Dell, HP and Iomega, generating as much as 264% more throughput and 327% faster response times in laboratory testing. VeriTest's full report titled "Snap Appliance Snap Server 4500: NAS Performance Testing" is available from VeriTest's Web site at http://www.veritest.com and includes comprehensive details on throughput, response rates, and configuration parameters.
Gartner Dataquest recently ranked Snap Appliance as the No. 1 NAS Vendor by Unit Shipments for the third straight year. During the last three years, we have shipped over 130,000 Snap Servers - more than all the other NAS vendors combined, says Jim Stewart, International sales director, Snap Appliance. We are pleased to continue the success with the introduction of the Snap Server 4500 into Australia and New Zealand. The 4500 represents our trademark simplicity and value, yet it continues to advance with enterprise-class capabilities and high performance. Additionally, the 2002 release of our GuardianOS has resulted in making Linux the fastest growing operating system in NAS. The Snap Server 4500 is an ideal platform upon which to continue the market leadership and technological innovation that has led to our current success.
