UNEXPECTED ART OUTDOORS AT HOTA

Announcement posted by HOTA 14 Dec 2018

Get a look inside Donald Trump’s head and see some incredible outdoor art from December 14.
Moving towards presenting more art in the outdoor space and developing their outdoor curatorial program, HOTA present three unique and exciting outdoor works to give people a taste of what’s to come as they prepare for the new HOTA Gallery, set to open in 2020.

The three works, which aim to surprise and delight art afficidonados and the local community, will provide social media-worthy moments and interactive opportunities as they pop up around HOTA’s precinct.

The first work to appear is HOTA’s 2018 Christmas Commisson, The Forum by Makers Take, which is on display until January 14. Makers Take responded to the commission, which encouraged Gold Coast artists to reimagine Christmas in a more contemporary way, by proposing that a modern Ausssie Christmas is about togetherness.

The sculptural-like furniture, in a playful, bright red, forms a seating installation designed to help us talk, connect and be together.  Found behind HOTA’s new Outdoor Stage, you can pack a picnic, fire up the BBQ and come together at The Forum this festive season.

HOTA CEO Criena Gehrke said: “I love how Makers Take have presented contemporary interactive pieces that riff on the nostalgic Australian Christmas, just add a sprinkler, Neapolitan ice-cream in cones, backyard cricket and the extended family.”

A shining example of homegrown entrepreneurship, the six Gold Coasters behind Makers Take chose to address the gap in the market and create pathways for makers and designers on the coast, reconfiguring into an exhibition platform for creatives across south east Queensland and northern New South Wales. They have produced three shows in Burleigh, Coolangatta and Brisbane, showcasing more than twenty local and national designers in their first year.

You can hear how Makers Take prepared for the commission at a special Artist Talk on Friday, January 11.

Field Drawing #1 by Kerrie Poliness, is the next work to appear at HOTA. You’ll find it on the grassy lawn near the Outdoor Stage. This choreographed artwork comes in the form of a drawing made with a sports field line-marker from a set of step-by-step instructions provided by the artist, resulting in a beautiful array of temporary lines reminiscent of natural patterns of growth.

Made from a composition of triangles and diamonds, this conceptual piece of art encourages exploration and begs to be photographed. The Melbourne-based artist behind the work uses abstract forms to create site-specific works, often participatory in their execution.

The final new work popping up in HOTA’s precinct this December, is Callum Morton’s irreverent Monument #23: Helter Shelter, a piece of street furniture rendered in the form of an emergent Donald Trump head which is hollowed-out and replete with inferno flames and bench seating.

Merging sculpture and architecture with a dose of humour, this monumental work by the internationally recognised artist aims to be experienced and functional; encouraging a place to take shelter in the case of summer rain.

The local community is encouraged to come along and interact with these outdoor exhibits said HOTA Curator, Bradley Vincent.

“We spend so much of our time outside, be it socialising, exercising, relaxing or exploring. I think it makes sense to think about what art can be exhibited, performed or made in the outdoors,” he said.

“There is no better time to be outside than a Gold Coast summer. It’s the perfect time for people to explore the parklands here at HOTA and see them bought to life by the work of amazing artists.”

The Forum can be found in the precinct from December 1, 2018 to January 14, 2019.

Field Drawing #1 can be found near the Outdoor Stage from December 14 until it grows out or washes away, and Monument #23: Helter Shelter can be found near the river from December 14, 2018 to January 25, 2019.

Artists Talk by Makers Take, will be held on  Friday 11 January from 6-7pm at The Forum (Riverside Lawn at HOTA). FREE but tickets are required, book here.
