Too many, landing a powerful position in a company that’s a household name might sound like the pinnacle of success, but former executives like Essington-Wilson say that for some, medium enterprise opens the door for self-actualisation and a better life.

That’s not to say that being in a big business isn’t satisfying for some, or that smaller businesses will suit everyone. It all depends on your priorities at any given life-stage and the type of business you choose says Darryl.

“I was very happy with my corporate career and I don’t regret a minute of it, but even as an executive, you’re still part of a very carefully-coordinated machine. At the time I started my first independent business, I had reached a point where I was ready to test my skills in a more flexible environment over which I had ultimate control.”

Although being the captain of one’s own ship might sound tantalising, Darryl warns that it’s not all wine and roses. Small business owners must be able to fulfil multiple roles, some of which would have been the work of specialised departments in larger firms. “You have to be ready to learn new things. You can’t just say: ‘Oh that’s HR’s problem,’ because you might just be CEO, HR, Marketing Manager, and Financial Manager all rolled into one. That’s a big responsibility.”

If, like Darryl, you enjoy that kind of challenge, you’ll love the more loosely defined roles you’ll encounter in smaller businesses. But if you like clearly defined boundaries between what you do and do not do and aren’t comfortable with the thought that success or failure are all up to you, smaller business or smaller business ownership won’t suit you.

And to get a small business launched and growing, you need passion and enthusiasm. For Darryl, being the owner of Gold Coast Family Car Rentals, a small business which has become a medium enterprise, presented an opportunity to disrupt an industry that he felt wasn’t offering consumers a fair deal. The terms of many car rental contracts and rental car insurance packages seemed to him to be unnecessarily punitive to consumers.

He says he’s proud of his achievements: “I wanted to show that you could offer a car rental service with more comfortable terms, better insurance, and superior personalised service for a lower price than the big companies, and I’ve achieved what I set out to do. If you’re an executive and you dream of disrupting an industry you know inside-out it’s worth taking the risk even if you fail. At least you’ll know for sure whether you were right all along or not.”

Darryl warns those thinking of taking the plunge to consider their priorities when choosing a new line of business outside the corporate world. His first foray outside corporate enterprise was with his own consulting company. It did very well, and he was in demand as a speaker at events, but it didn’t give him the freedom to enjoy his home, family life, and hobbies or fulfil his desire to travel with his loved ones.

“When I set up Gold Coast Family Car Rentals, I knew I’d have to put in a lot of work to get the ball rolling, but I included the fulfilment of my goals for personal and family life in my overall business strategy. It’s something you can only tailor for yourself outside the corporate sector, but if you don’t keep the goal in sight, you won’t achieve it.”

A conversation with Darryl Essington-Wilson is enough to show you he’s happy with the choices he’s made and the rewards he’s earned since his break with corporate life. But as he points out, it isn’t for everyone, and it isn’t necessarily going to be easy. Those who succeed have a clear vision, an idea that sets them apart, the flexibility to perform multiple roles, and the dedication to make it all work.

Leaving the corporate world for small business, it seems, won’t mean you’ll have an easier job, or more money, and you’ll certainly lose prestige, but for those with vision, it could be the best thing they ever did.
