AUSTRALIA’S FAMOUS KIDS CIRCUS SWINGS INTO HOTA

Announcement posted by HOTA 18 Feb 2019

On March 29 and 30, the highly acclaimed Flying Fruit Fly Circus return to HOTA with their exhilarating new, fun-filled show, JUNK.
Stepping back in time, this thrilling circus adventure is set in a rural junkyard in a time when playing in the street with the kids on the block was the greatest fun of all.

JUNK is an inventive exploration of the changing world of childhood, set in a time before kids were glued to screens, and used their imagination to transform everyday items into a magical landscape of thrilling circus adventures.

Australia’s world-famous national youth circus tells this heartfelt story through a wonderful production featuring seventeen young artists who will take audience’s breath away with jaw-dropping acrobatics, magical shadow puppetry and world-class circus skills.

HOTA CEO Criena Gehrke said she is delighted to welcome the newest production from the acclaimed Flying Fruit Fly Circus.

“The Flying Fruit Fly Circus are Australia’s leading physical theatre company and have always been an incubator of incredible talent,” she said.

“There’s no doubt that modern circus shows have become popular, but the Flying Fruit Fly’s really take things to the next level. This is an energetic, incredibly imaginative acrobatic performance with an emphasis on storytelling and theatre.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to bring a show of this quality to the Gold Coast,” she said.

Evoked from conversations with elderly residents in regional nursing homes across the country about the games they played as children, this intergenerational work is led by Artistic Director, Jodie Farrugia, who incorporates games of the past including noughts and crosses, tricycle-riding, elastics and hopscotch.

The spectacular showcase also includes voices of these elders as sound sources, along with rhythmic changes and verses from skipping and hopscotch that bring to life the energy and skills of the extraordinary young circus artists.

Founded in 1979 as a holiday project for local youth in Albury-Wodonga, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus is recognised as one of the world’s leading youth arts companies. With many landmark projects to its name, and an ever-increasing alumni working in leading companies around the world, it is perhaps Australia’s most successful cultural community development project continuing to enrich the lives of many young Australians.

JUNK swings into HOTA on Friday 29th March at 10.30am and Saturday 30th March at 10.30am and 3pm.
