HOTA LAUNCHES FINAL GALLERY EXHIBITION UNTIL 2021

On display from 11 May to 30 June, Dean Cogle: Beyond Nostalgia, will be the fitting closing exhibition for the Gallery at HOTA by commended local artist, Dean Cogle.
The last exhibition within the existing building, which will make way for the $60.5 million world-class Gallery opening in early 2021, is synonymous with coastal culture, embodying themes of place, memory and identity.
Dean Cogle has worked closely with the Gallery at HOTA team over the life of the Gallery and previously featured in key exhibitions, including Fibro Coast and We Are Gold Coast, with two of his paintings a part of the Gallery collection.
Reflecting upon his interests in architecture, as well as personal narratives and popular culture, Beyond Nostaligia is a retrospective capture of the Gold Coast’s iconic lifestyle and celebrates forty years of the artist’s creative output including painting, design and illustration.
HOTA Gallery Director, Tracy Cooper-Lavery, said the last official exhibition in the Foyer Gallery by Dean is the perfect embodiment of HOTA’s extensive creative collaboration with local artists.
“Dean Cogle is a long-time contributor to the visual documentation of the Gold Coast. His work embraces a beachside vernacular, reminiscent of seaside holidays and first loves, all with a distinctly Gold Coast aesthetic,” she said.
“This exhibition continues HOTA’s commitment to presenting the work of Gold Coast artists.”
From 1950s fibro beach houses to 1970s walk-ups, breezeways and tessellated brickwork, Dean’s photo-real representations are born of astute observation and sensitivity to place.
Upon his arrival to the Gold Coast almost forty years ago, Dean began airbrushing surfboards for several pro-surfers, then later moved into graphic design, art direction, illustration, print production and graphics for surf wear.
Several years on, Dean nurtured local artists through his own gallery, building a supportive camaraderie amongst Gold Coast artists.
Dean Cogle: Beyond Nostalgia features in the HOTA Foyer Gallery from Saturday 11 May to Sunday 30 June, 2019. The exhibition opening event is on Saturday 11 May from 2-4pm.
