iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, has announced two new products which will extend its directory services platform. The new products provide the industry's first end-to-end directory solution for e-business and web services deployments for managing identity and policy, as well as consolidating disparate user information spread throughout an enterprise.

With the new iPlanet(tm) Directory Server Integration Edition 5.0 and iPlanet(tm) Directory Server Access Management Edition 5.0 in combination with the award winning iPlanet(tm) Directory Server 5.0 customers have a tightly integrated directory services infrastructure for managing identity and access through a single sign-on to multiple web-based applications and services.

With the new directory products iPlanet is also providing two key components of the Sun(tm) Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) web services architecture. Identity and access management provide a central repository for storing context, preferences and other user specific attributes that are critical for delivering web services as envisioned by Sun ONE.

iPlanet Directory Server Integration Edition 5.0 and Access Management Edition 5.0 are designed to minimise user management costs, accelerate deployment of new services, centralise security and policy, reduce application development costs, and improve data integrity throughout an organisation. iPlanet Directory Server already powers some of the largest e-commerce, enterprise and consumer websites for US customers such as First Union, Ford, and Schlumberger with more than 500 million licenses sold to date.

The new iPlanet Directory Server Integration Edition 5.0 is designed to provide the meta-directory services of joining and managing user information distributed throughout the enterprise. This solution enables user profile information to be synchronised with Microsoft Active Directory, NT domains, Oracle, and others. In addition, this solution helps enable more secure, highly available directory services.

The iPlanet Directory Server Access Management Edition 5.0 is a comprehensive policy, identity, and user management solution that enables global authentication and authorisation based on centralised access
management policies. Tightly integ rating the iPlanet Directory Server with policy, user management, and a certificate authority simplifies administration of users and provides a single user identity across a range of web and application servers. In addition, more secure authentication and privacy rights can be enforced through the strong security of digital
certificates.

"Today, directory services are an essential part of the network computing infrastructure, and a strategic investment for tomorrow's web services to lay the foundation for identity and access management," said Duncan Bennet, Managing Director, iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, Australia and New Zealand. "Directory-enabled applications now power critical processes of an enterprise, including resource planning, value chain management, security and firewalls, resource provisioning and e-business applications. Through the benefits of a centralised identity and access management infrastructure, businesses can have greater financial, organisational, and competitive agility in the marketplace."
###
iPlanet Directory Server Integration Edition 5.0 includes:
iPlanet Meta-Directory module that unifies directory information, making existing data available to web applications from a variety of sources to provide a single, consistent view of enterprise-wide user data. Together, these benefits can lower administration costs through automating account creation and management processes.

iPlanet Meta-Directory module that enables synchronisation with back-end data sources including network operating system (NOS) directories such as Microsoft Active Directory and NT domains. With the Integration Edition, enterprises can now build a complete 'corporate system of record' based on the performance, scalability, and reliability of the iPlanet Directory Server. Other data sources such as Oracle are also supported.

LDAP proxy module that enhances the security, reliability, and client interoperability of the directory services infrastructure.

iPlanet Directory Server Access Management Edition 5.0 includes:
Policy module that provides centralised access management to enable simplified, Web single sign-on across web-based applications and services.

User management module that enables delegated administration of users to give real-time self-service and account management by employees, customers, partners, and suppliers.

Certificate authority module that provides a flexible means of authenticating users according to the appropriate level of security required for each application.

iPlanet Directory Server Resource Kit 5.0
iPlanet will offer the iPlanet Directory Server Resource Kit 5.0 for directory administrators. The toolkit will assist ISVs and system integrators to ease development of directory-based applications and accelerate deployment of iPlanet Directory Server 5.0.
