‘Car Rental Companies Challenged To Recycle For Charity’

Gold Coast Family Car Rentals is challenging other rental companies to join their Recycling for Charity program

The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s major event areas year-round, thanks to almost perennial sunny weather and a bustling social calendar, so there’s always something to enjoy. Visitors to the area can look forward to an array of sterling events over the winter, and many of these are free.

In the lineup over the next few months are the Gold Coast Food and Wine Festival, the Groundwater Country Music Festival on Broadbeach, the SWELL Sculpture Festival on Currumbin Beach, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival. This is one of Australia’s largest free music festivals, featuring Australian talent as well as international acts.

Gold Coast Family Car Rentals have launched a double benefit drive to help holidaymakers do good for the environment and local charities at the same time while attending events on the Gold Coast. A new initiative will see them turn their customers’ recyclables into cash for charities, and they’re urging other companies to do the same.

CEO Darryl Essington-Wilson says, “We love having an array of entertainment on our doorstep year-round, drawing visitors to enjoy all the attractions on the Gold Coast. Festivals like these can, however, generate a lot of litter and we would encourage event-goers to be conscientious around their recyclables. This is why we’re now including a few reusable shopping bags to go out with each rental. Our customers can fill these with their empty drinks containers and return them to us at the end of their trip. We’ll then exchange them for cash to support six different charities in our Community fund program.”

All aluminium, glass, plastic and cardboard drink containers between 15.ml and 3L can be returned under the container deposit scheme launched in Queensland in November 2018. The government levies 10c per container to help fund the 'Containers for Change' scheme and have set up exchange centres that will refund the levy on eligible containers. “Containers that go straight to a recycling centre forfeit the 10c levy refund. We saw an opportunity to make each 10c count towards a worthy cause - collecting and exchanging our customers’ empty containers means we can send those funds somewhere they can do a lot of good,” says Darryl.

One of the charities that will benefit from the program is Beyond Blue, an organisation committed to providing knowledge, skills and support to people across Australia to protect their mental health. Their research shows that three million Australians currently experience anxiety or depression. Beyond Blue are tackling stigma, prejudice and discrimination and breaking down barriers to enable people to speak up and reach out when in need. Their dedicated effort reaches people at home, work, school, university, online and in communities.

“We’d like to see other companies join our drive to channel funds to worthy causes like Beyond Blue and others, via our Recycling for Charity program. The 'Containers for Change' scheme is a great start to increase recycling rates in Queensland, in a time where we’re seeing plastic pollution becoming a scourge on beaches everywhere. This is an eyesore that also has a hugely detrimental impact on marine life. And if we can use that drive to give back to organisations providing support to vulnerable citizens, I’d say that’s a win-win situation.” says Darryl.

Gold Coast Family Car Rentals prioritise providing the very best levels of service and value to their customers. They guarantee the lowest price, vehicle cleanliness and reliability, and peace of mind and they offer free child seats with each rental.
