‘Car Rental Chief Challenges Competitors To “Recycle For Charity”’

Car rental companies are challenged to raise money for charity by replicating Gold Coast Family Car Rentals’ Recycling for Charity program.

Gold Coast, June 2019. Car Rental companies are facing a brand new challenge - to step up and raise money for charity by replicating Gold Coast Family Car Rentals’ Recycling for Charity program.

Realising that many of their customers don’t have a real opportunity to cash in their containers under Queensland’s new Container deposit scheme, Gold Coast Family Car Rentals recently launched a Recycling for Charity Drive to get behind the state’s recycling program.

CEO Darryl Essington-Wilson is a firm believer in giving back to the community, “We’re taking a stand against needless environmental pollution and challenging other companies to join in. Car rental companies don’t often get to make a direct contribution to the health of environment while also supporting local charities, so we’d like to maximise this opportunity and get other companies involved.

Using the reusable shopping bags we provide with each rental, customers can now return their empty recyclable containers to us at the end of their trip and we’ll exchange them for cash to support a number of worthwhile charities. Proceeds will be distributed equally between the nominated organisations.”

Charities that will benefit from the fund-raising drive are:

  • Variety - the Children’s Charity
  • headspace - National Youth Mental Health foundation
  • Beyond Blue - Mental health support and advice for everyone in Australia
  • Dementia Australia
  • RSL DefenceCare - help for Australian veterans and their families in need
  • Currumbin Wildlife Hospital – Treating and releasing sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife.

Variety -The Children’s charity was founded in 1928 and supports kids and families facing immense challenges through illness, disadvantage or special needs. They enable kids to gain mobility, achieve independence, increase their self-esteem and attain their full potential. In 2018, Variety gave 111,712 Aussie kids a fair go through grants of equipment, programs, experiences and Variety Heart Scholarships.

Drinks containers are the second most littered item in Queensland and a major contributor to pollution of the environment. While nearly all can be recycled, most end up in landfills. The focus of the Containers for Change scheme is on away-from-home containers, which are the most littered. The project aims to increase employment opportunities, support protection of wildlife, and foster fund raising opportunities for community organisations and charities.

“We’ve registered with the Containers for Change Scheme and now have a small recycling centre up and running at our depot. This enables us to sort and return eligible containers to any of their exchange centres and have the proceeds deposited on behalf of the community benefit organisations which we support.” says Darryl.

Eligible containers include beer up to 500ml and pre-mixed alcoholic drinks; soft drink and water containers between 150ml and 3 litres; flavoured milk and pure juice containers up to 1 litre.

Gold Coast Family Car Rentals is a family run business committed to providing the best levels of service and value since 2001. Full details of the Recycling for Charity drive are available on their website, with links provided to make additional donations to an individual charity or an equal contribution to all six charities.
