Why Millennials are Driving a Coworking Boom in Brisbane

The first coworking space opened in San Francisco in 2005. Since this concept of coworking started, over 16,500 spaces have opened worldwide popularised by stylish providers such as WeWork. Australia is at the forefront of flexible workspace growth, ranked 6th in the world for coworking growth per capita.
“We’ve seen huge demand for coworking in Brisbane. Not just from freelancers and startups, but from professional services and traditional businesses” said Merran Jack, co-founder of flexible workspace Studio 42 Workspaces. After reaching venue capacity within 4 months of opening, Studio 42 Workspaces had to waitlist over 100 local businesses seeking coworking space.
Brisbane has attracted attention from flexible workspace giants such as WeWork. They opened their CBD location in March this year, following the launch of Hub’s Anzac Square location in December 2018, collectively providing 2100 new desks to the city’s business community.
According to Office Hub’s latest Australian coworking report, millennials make up over half of the coworking contingent.
“It’s the future of work” said Ms Jack, “People love working in a community and having choice when it comes to their workspace”.
Merran believes that more employees and business owners expect flexibility in their work schedules. “We see a lot of millennials with young families who want to build their careers and maintain a home life. Coworking is part of that work-life balance equation for them” said Merran.
