Busselton Jetty takes the lead with Ocean Guardian’s Marine Safety Zone

Announcement posted by 360PR 06 Aug 2019

One of the longest jetties in the world, the iconic 154-year-old Busselton Jetty, is soon to implement the new Ocean Guardian Marine Safety Zone. Leading the way for the future of our oceans, the 1.7km off shore jetty will be the first of its kind in the world to take any action for shark mitigation and to allow divers to explore its beautiful marine life with peace of mind and proven protection.

Lindsay Lyon, CEO of Ocean Guardian says, “We are proud to see the Busselton Jetty implement our new Marine Safety Zone solution to protect swimmers, divers and the marine environment alike. This is a significant breakthrough as existing methods for shark management such as shark nets, drum lines and shark culling not only kill many sharks annually but also other animals such as turtles, whales, seals and dolphins. Our Shark Shield Technology is proven and does not harm sharks, everyone wins.”

Lisa Shreeve, CEO of Busselton Jetty says, “Our tourist guests will be able to come to the Busselton Jetty and enjoy snorkel or dive at one of the world’s top 10 shore dive sites and enjoy seeing our unique and colourful marine life that only occurs under the Jetty due to the Leeuwin Current and the shade of the structure.”

Ocean Guardian’s Shark Shield Technology is the world’s only scientifically proven and independently tested electrical shark deterrent. The new Marine Safety Zone solution by Ocean Guardian developed by the KwaZulu Natal Sharks Board creates a virtual net with electrode lengths connected to buoys spaced every three metres on a cable floating on the surface. The ends or corners of the cable are anchored to the seabed using standard sea anchors, in this case with power supplied from the jetty.

“We at the Jetty and our 700 members are very excited to be able to share this technology with our 500,000 visitors per year,” adds Lisa.

About Ocean Guardian:

Ocean Guardian is the world’s leading shark deterrent technology company. Since 2001 the company’s Shark Shield Technology has protected tens of thousands of ocean lovers and prevented the unnecessary killing of animals from environmentally fatal shark nets, drum-lines and shark culling.
Ocean Guardian’s Shark Shield Technology is the only scientifically proven electrical shark deterrent supported by peer-reviewed published research, and successful in deterring Great Whites. The technology is so effective the government has approved the devices for consumer rebates. Nothing is more effective.
Sharks have short-range electrical receptors in their snouts used for finding food. Shark Shield Technology is used to create a powerful three-dimensional electrical field which causes spasms in these sensitive receptors turning sharks away. There are no known harmful effects on sharks or humans.
Ocean Guardian products are trusted by ocean goers around the world, whether you’re swimming off your boat with family and friends, out seeking to land your next big fish, or simply heading off to enjoy a dive, snorkel or surf, our technology is here to enhance your ocean experience and provide peace of mind.
