Deaf Services Launches Ageing Well Program in New South Wales

Announcement posted by Deaf Services 05 Sep 2019

Deaf Services has this week announced the launch of its Australian Government approved in-home care program, Ageing Well, in New South Wales.

The New South Wales launch marks Ageing Well’s first service availability outside of Queensland, where the program has been providing in-home care for Deaf and hard of hearing seniors since 2015.

Ageing Well operates with the goal of improving the quality of life, independence and personal well-being of its clients, through supporting daily activities, ensuring environmental safety and encouraging social participation and community connectedness.

The program delivers these supports as well as client and community information in Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and is focused on ensuring services are provided with a consideration to the unique language and cultural needs of its clients.

Deaf Services CEO, Brett Casey said the Ageing Well program is a vital service for empowering Deaf and hard of hearing Australians over the age of 65 and builds capacity for the communities in which they live.

“The Ageing Well program encourages active, healthy ageing, and ensures Deaf seniors remain connected with their communities at this important time in their lives,” Mr Casey said.

“The expansion of Ageing Well is an important step in ensuring the communication and support needs of the community in New South Wales are met, and that they receive services maintaining their quality of life and wellness.”

The program will be officially launched at a community information event in Burwood on September 12, during which the local Deaf community will have the opportunity to meet the staff and find out more about the services available. This event will be Auslan interpreted.
