Acer Powers Up With Equant IP VPN

Announcement posted by Equant 16 Sep 2003

Equant to connect PC maker's 11 key business centres in Asia, Europe and the Americas with MPLS-based IP VPN service
Equant (NYSE: ENT) (Euronext Paris: EQU), a recognised industry leader in global data and IP services for multinational businesses, has won a four-year, multimillion-dollar contract to provide Acer Inc. with an 11-site IP VPN connecting its key business centres in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, Acer Inc.'s IT product business is flourishing across the globe. Acer markets a full scope of branded IT products including PCs, monitors, storage devices, displays and projectors.
"We were very impressed by Equant's professional services skills and ability to understand our needs," said Eric Lee, CIO of Acer Inc. "Throughout the process, Equant worked closely with us to identify the types of service we required, as well as other value-added services that would benefit our business. They clearly understand our demands for a cost-effective and scalable solution and were able to meet our needs precisely."
Acer joins the list of more than 900 Equant IP VPN customers who have been able to:
Tap into Equant's industry-leading MPLS-based IP VPN. With Equant IP VPN, Acer can run voice and data over a single, cost-effective network providing secure, high performance connectivity to its 5,700-employee business. Using the class of service option under Equant's IP VPN solution, Acer can maximise bandwidth utilisation and optimise performance of applications. As a result, users can access e-mail and transfer files more quickly and seamlessly, even from remote locations, than with the current frame relay network.
Prepare for the future of voice and data convergence. Equant spent more than a year working with Acer prior to the award of the contract to gain an understanding of its business and communications needs. This allowed Equant to propose a customised, robust and flexible solution for Acer with the option for future network expansion and the launch of other services such as Voice and Video over IP, which leverage Equant's market-leading five classes of service.
Use Equant Professional Services to better design and manage the network. Equant's professional services team analysed the current issues and worked with the customer to design a network solution that accurately met Acer's requirements. Equant project managers will manage the migration from frame relay to the new platform. For end-to-end support, Acer chose Equant Network Management, a service that will monitor the network on a 24x7 basis, with a single point of management and problem resolution.
Reduce costs. With 5,700 employees globally, Acer had a critical need to deploy an efficient, high-quality communications solution that will reduce communications costs. Through Equant IP VPN, Acer will achieve cost savings from smarter bandwidth utilisation. Additional cost-savings opportunities can be uncovered by working with Equant project managers and from continuous network monitoring.
David Nishball, Equant's senior vice president, Markets and Sales, Asia Pacific Australasia, said: "Companies are looking for solutions that give them an edge in today's challenging business environment. Our solutions focus on creating value for our customers so they can focus on their core competencies and business goals. Leveraging our extensive experience, we are able to successfully deliver reliability and quality, and look forward to becoming a trusted partner of Acer's."
