BRING YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS HOME TO HOTA THIS SUMMER

Announcement posted by HOTA 26 Sep 2019

HOTA, Home of the Arts is opening their “home” for a massive 15 day celebration during December.
Themed HOME, this new series will feature 20 exciting events and activities from December 1 to 15, providing a place for people of all ages to come home and celebrate the end of the year with family or friends.

Boasting a packed program, HOME is the first program of its kind for HOTA, featuring national, international and local artists and activities, with similar events in the pipeline for next year including the return of HOME in December 2020.

HOTA CEO, Criena Gehrke, said HOME is the essence of summer on the Gold Coast captured in one program – with unique events and experiences that offer something for everyone.

“I love summer on the Gold Coast” Criena said. “And while you’ll be spoilt for choice about what to see at HOME, it’s also about getting together with those you love and making the most of our glorious weather and the anticipation of Christmas just around the corner.”

HOME kicks off on December 1 with the Gold Coast’s first Roots Music Festival featuring a star-studded line up of artists. Little Georgia, Karl S Williams, Bobby Alu and Band of Frequencies will come together to celebrate local musical talent, good food and cultural diversity.

Packing a punch of hip hop politics that is sure to make you laugh until you cry, Hot Brown Honey will bring the house down before an after party to remember by video DJ, Yo! Mafia.

Dance Beneath Stars is the ultimate pop-up dance party and night out. Hosted by Everybody NOW’s Ian Pidd, this event will see HOTA lay out the dance floor and hang up the lights to surprise and delight guests with dance workshops, vintage dance and all-on-the-floor freestyle dance in this part-performance, part-participatory party with Hot Potato Band.

Popping up throughout the program are festival street theatre favourites from Barcelona, OSADÍA, who will roam the parklands and pick participants to transform hair into sculptural works of art.

Celebrating local artists, the black box theatre inside the Outdoor Stage will come alive with the thought-provoking performance, Mapped GC 2040, drag and burlesque smack down, Rumble! and home-grown hilarious cabaret The UnReal Real Housewives of the Gold Coast.

Wildy popular New Zealand band, SIX60 will bring it home on December 7, as the group perform their sold-out show at HOTA’s Outdoor Stage to a crowd of thousands lucky enough to have secured a ticket.

On December 8, Concrete Culture will transform HOTA into a skate mecca for the whole family. This daytime event will feature new curated work by HOTA that celebrates the Gold Coast’s skate culture, and also includes workshops by Rock’n’Slide, demos by Precinct Skate Shop, an exhibition of women in skate by Yeah Girl and live music by Radolescent and Perve Endings.

Another highlight of HOME is Deadly Hearts: A Celebration of Australian Indigenous Music, presented in collaboration with ABC Music. The concert is from the hearts and mouths of Australia’s best past, present and emerging artists, including Jessica Mauboy, Archie Roach, Aodhan, Selve, Kinship Collective and HVWKS, with more artists still to be announced.

The outdoor visual experience features installations from The Walls, the South Stradbroke Island Indigenous Artist Camp Exhibition and local artist, Samuel Leighton-Dore, who will literally wrap up the summer festivities with HOTA’s 2019 Christmas Commission; a visual feast decking the entrance to HOTA from top to toe in wrapping paper.

HOME culminates in a closing concert spectacular - Calling Home - which will toll the bells and transcend faith and traditions with Lior and Parvyn Singh, backed by the Camerata Orchestra, and directed by Benjamin Knapton. Audiences are invited to come together and celebrate multi-faith songs and rituals under the stars in a truly unique experience.

The program is topped off with daily curated Artistian Markets, drinks at HOTA’s Lawn Bar, Christmas ArtLab’s for the littlies and much more, as HOTA becomes the place to call home this summer.

HOME will run from December 1 to 15, with performances and activities held all across HOTA’s parklands.

The sculptural quality of hairdressing becomes theatre in the barbers’ chairs of OSADÍA. This street theatre company formed in Barcelona in 1996 designed  by multifaceted hairdresser, Alex Rendon. These transformations can happen anywhere and to anyone who dares to accept the challenge to sit in OSADÍA´s grand barber chairs.

They create original and provocative exhibitions of sophisticated make-up and hair art, set to fantastic music mixes. The audience is always amazed by the transformed characters that descend from the chair, who become the centre of attention and are photographed wherever they go. Since this innovative show was first presented in Barcelona in 1996, it has been presented throughout Europe, Australia, the US, South America , Africa, China and South East Asia.
