Nutanix Targets Natural Resources Sector

Announcement posted by Nutanix 15 Oct 2019

Newly created practice to focus on driving digital transformation as sector looks to technology to drive sustainable growth

SYDNEY, Australia – 15 October 2019: Enterprise cloud OS leader, Nutanix (NASDAQ: NTNX) has established a new vertical practice focused on the Natural Resources sector. Based in  Brisbane, the team will target the country’s mining and oil & gas industries.

The move is part of an ongoing investment in Australia by Nutanix and comes as the sector faces a number of challenges the enterprise OS leader is uniquely qualified to solve.

The focus on Australia’s natural resources is being led by industry veterans Christopher Mahar and Ben Footer: Mahar brings extensive local sector experience from his time leading Telstra’s Mining Services, as well as his senior roles at Motorola and Siemens. Footer, compliments Mahar’s credentials having spent time in global resource focused roles at both Singtel/Optus and Telstra.

Natural resources account for approximately 26 Billion AUD or 6.5 percent of Australian GDP, so its value is significant in terms of the larger economy. That said, the sector is facing a number of challenges.

On the talent front, there is a growing shortage of skilled workers as fewer graduates enter the industry. At the production level, existing mines are becoming more complex and costly to develop. Meanwhile, new mineral discoveries of suitable size and quality, are becoming rarer and more difficult to find.  All these factors are exerting significant pressure on the sector to change, and it is looking to technology to lead that change.

Technology is now seen as the key driver and why the arrival of the newly created Nutanix practice is significant. As the sector increases remote operations, monitoring, and use of AI, machine learning and the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) – The ability to optimise the value of its data and sustain growth will become key.

That will require extensive use of edge computing. As the number of remote and connected devices rapidly increase in size and capability - there will be a need for real-time decision making and decision automation free from the restrictions of a centralised private or public cloud.

By making decisions locally, edge computing can provide real-time local data analysis to devices, such as drilling and transportation equipment as well as  health and safety systems and appliances. The demand for remote operations to collect, process, and transmit high-quality data in real time, despite extreme conditions or limited connectivity to increase productivity will grow in importance.

However, the sector still relies on many costly, complex, bespoke and inefficient processes – and technologies.

Nutanix was founded to disrupt the status quo and has expertise at breaking down and collapsing technology – to the point that it is almost invisible. But, it is also has extensive experience in streamlining business process design and development.

“The natural resources sector is a complex and intricate web of overlapping technologies, organisations, cultures and personalities. A lot like a  series of large independent, logistics and supply chain organisations trying to mesh as one.” Said Christopher Mahar, Practice Lead, Natural Resources at Nutanix. “We provide the ability to break down and eliminate the personal frictions these large, complex, silos create. All of a sudden technology, is reducing personal tensions, misunderstandings, and bottlenecks too, and that adds significantly to collaboration and the long term profitability of the business.”

“Our mandate is to help Australia’s mining and oil & gas industries sustain growth and profitability,” said Ben Footer, Practice Lead, Client Services Natural Resources at Nutanix. “We are here to ensure Australia’s natural resource companies have access to the solutions and counsel they need to compete globally and support the country’s future economic and technological leadership.”

Nutanix already has strong links within the government and education sectors in Australia. This move is seen as a strategic expansion and part of the company’s increased involvement and influence in the country’s key sectors.
