70th Anniversary of CSIRAC; 2019 National Pearcey Awards Dinner; ‘First Computer // Digital Future’ education event at Scienceworks

This week in Melbourne, the Pearcey Foundation is hosting three special events to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Dr Trevor Pearcey and the 70th anniversary of one of his greatest achievements, CSIRAC, Australia’s first computer and the world’s fourth.

CSIRAC 70th Anniversary Celebration

Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of CSIRAC: Australia's first computer and the world's fourth and explore the impact of computation in Australia, contemplating the work Trevor Pearcey would be undertaking today (if he were still alive!).

 

The line-up of distinguished speakers includes:

 

  • Gilbert Brunet - Group Executive and Chief Scientist, Bureau of Meteorology
  • Paul Doornbusch - Associate Dean, Australian College of the Arts
  • Rose Hiscock - Director, Museums and Collections, University of Melbourne
  • Grant Petty - CEO and Founder, Blackmagic Design
  • Liz Sonenberg - Professor and Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Melbourne

2019 Pearcey Foundation National Awards Dinner

The Pearcey Foundation is holding its annual National Awards Dinner at Rydges on Swanston. As well as the presentation of the winners of the prestigious 2019 Pearcey National Awards – including the Pearcey Medal, Hall of Fame and Entrepreneur or the Year - NSW Government's Chief Data Scientist and CEO of the NSW Data Analytics Centre, Dr Ian Oppermann will be delivering a keynote address on the topic of 'Trust'.

 

Tickets are $250 each or $150 for entrepreneurs and employees of government or public-funded R&D organisations. 10% discount for tables of 10.

First Computer // Digital Future

Held in partnership with Scienceworks, Students will have the opportunity to explore how IT has changed over time in the Think Ahead exhibition at Scienceworks, home of the restored CSIRAC. Hear from guest speakers on the importance of Victorian research into computing, data science and where computer science is headed in the future. Students will also participate in a workshop presentation about electronic music in honour of CSIRAC's legacy in computer music.
