Legatos New NetWorker PowerSnap Solution for NetApp Delivers Online Snapshot Backup and Recovery for Oracle (r) Databases

Announcement posted by Legato Systems Inc. 17 May 2002

Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a worldwide leader in enterprise storage management software, today announced the availability of Legato NetWorker PowerSnap Solution for NetApp which provides online snapshot backup and recovery of Oracle (r) databases stored on Network Appliance (tm)storage solutions for improved application performance, availability and greater business continuity.
This is the first in a series of Legato NetWorker PowerSnap (tm) Solutions that utilize storage-based snapshots to provide rapid, online protection to free applications from the impact of backup and recovery operations.
Network Appliance continues to advance storage solutions to meet our customers' increased needs for business continuance, said Ray Villeneuve, vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. By working closely with Legato and Oracle on collaborative solutions, we help our enterprise customers experience greater flexibility and improved disaster recovery capabilities.
NetWorker PowerSnap solution for NetApp enables incremental snapshot backups instantly and at multiple times (e.g. hourly) to lower exposure to database corruption errors. Databases can be recovered in minutes by simply selecting the snapshot backup desired. For disaster recovery, full backups are completed automatically to tape and serverless data travels directly from the NetApp Filer to tape devices, so that Oracle database server performance is never degraded.
George Symons, vice president, Product Management and Development, Legato Systems said, NetWorker PowerSnap for NetApp expands Legatos scope for providing automated, online protection for Oracle databases and meets the rapidly growing demand for predictable and continuous application performance while protecting all Oracle data stored on Network Appliance filers. Oracle users can perform multiple snapshot backups instantly, recover a damaged database in minutes, and accomplish serverless backups to tape for disaster recovery.
The engineering of the PowerSnap Solution for NetApp combines the host-based component of Legato NetWorker PowerSnap Module for Oracle with the storage-based component of Legato NetWorker PowerSnap for NetApp, and fully leverages NetApp Filers and NetApp SnapShots (tm), which is validated by Oracles Storage Compatibility Program (OSCP). As the host-based component, NetWorker PowerSnap Module for Oracle provides database integrity during snapshot and full backups and facilitates database recovery using snapshot roll back or NetApps SnapRestor (tm). As the storage-based component, NetWorker PowerSnap for NetApp manages NetApp Snapshots via the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP). With this new solution, Legato NetWorker automatically manages both components during backup and recovery operations of Oracle databases.
