KIDS WILL BECOME HEROES AT HOTA THIS SUMMER

Announcement posted by M10 Collective 13 Dec 2019

HOTA’s Kids Take Over school holiday program is returning this January, with an action-packed mini fest where kids can get creative, be messy and be entertained.
From January 14 to 18, HOTA is encouraging kids to embrace their inner super hero during this exciting program of activities themed ‘Save the World’.

The HOTA parklands will be taken over by a mega Boxwars battle, amazing performances, upbeat dance parties, creative and cutting edge technology workshops and so much more.

HOTA CEO, Criena Gehrke, said kids and their adults will love what’s on at HOTA this January.

“Our Kids Take Over program is one of the best yet, jam packed with a mix of free and low cost performances and activities that will keep your little creatives entertained this summer,” she said.

“Highlights for me include the awe inspiring Air Play from New York’s Acrobuffos, the hilarious and quirky Laser Beak Man from acclaimed Australian artist Tim Sharp and a special Heroes High Tea kids can design and host a beautiful high tea for their hero.”

Prior to the Kids Take Over program kicking off, Acrobuffos from New York City will wow audiences with a special booked event from January 10 to 11 called Air Play. A visual poem that took years of experimentation with simple materials, movement, air and technology, and features elements of comedy, sculpture, circus and theatre.

This impressive performance has captivated audiences around the globe and will take its viewers on a magical circus-style adventure, providing bold reminders of childhood and growing up. Featuring clowns, balloons which have a mind of their own, confetti that turns into the night sky and so much more.

Laser Beak Man is saving the world one story at a time. From the creative mind of Australian artist, Tim Sharp, Laser Beak Man is a high energy puppet show packed with the trademark humour and visual puns that come from Tim’s literal interpretation of language. Playing at HOTA from January 16 to 18, audiences will learn all about the adventures of a local hero who works hard to keep his city perfect and safe from evil in a performance that explodes with colour and energy.

After it’s huge success last year, Boxwars returns to HOTA. Battling it out from January 14 to 18, Boxwars invites people of the Gold Coast to join the Thunderbirds’ International Rescue Team in building objects out of cardboard in their Kids and Adult Boxwars Workshops, and then destroying them in a huge battle to end all battles on the very last day.

Toonworld also returns to HOTA from January 14 to 17 with Create A Comic, an activity where kids can learn to draw cartoon characters, create a storyboard and their very own larger than life comic strip on a wall at HOTA.

From January 15 to 17, kids can learn to be heroes in the Eco Warrior Workshop by creating individual reusable cups for the HOTA café to help reduce the use of disposable cups; work on a range of design and business challenges in the Inventors Lab where participants will develop their own products and build their own businesses; and learn how to manipulate shapes and create an augmented reality in Technology in Play.

Kids will also have the chance to hit the decks this summer with DJ Workshops and a 10-Minute Dance Party, work with veteran buskers to become Mini Buskers for the day, chill out with free movie screenings, enjoy a sausage sizzle, and get messy making their very own oozy slime in The Slime-o-logy Project.

In order to save the world, kids will receive their very own passport on arrival at HOTA where they can add their thumb print and details, write about their heroic adventures, and collect stamps throughout the school holiday program.

With plenty to see and do, HOTA’s super Kids Take Over program will be one for the whole family to experience this summer from January 14 to 18.
