Announcement posted by Openwave 24 Apr 2002
Deployment Process in Full Swing For Download Fun, Instant Messaging
Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based mobile communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that China United Telecommunications Corporation ("China Unicom"), the parent company of China Unicom Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, HKSE: 0762), has selected the Openwave Services OS(tm) suite of software to power its mobile data services on its recently launched CDMA network. With Openwave's wireless Internet offering, China Unicom can provide its subscribers a seamless out-of-the-box experience for value-added, sticky mobile Internet consumer applications such as mobile instant messaging and the ability to download entertainment content.
"The Openwave Services OS suite of products is designed to meet China Unicom's objectives of lifting ARPU by targeting a higher end user base," said Mike Mulica, senior vice president, office of customer operations at Openwave. "We strive to work with our customers to achieve a good return on their investment by building out a future-proof platform that will allow them to have a faster service deployment at a lower total cost of ownership. In addition, Openwave's platform is designed to enable China Unicom to
provide their customers with a more compelling, easy-to-use, and personalized mobile Internet experience." China Unicom has the benefit of learning from other successful CDMA mobile data deployments worldwide where carriers enjoy complete end-to-end management of their mobile data business. Openwave will provide China Unicom with its powerful Openwave Services OS
platform - from mobile data access, tools for efficient customer and network management to popular mobile Internet and messaging service applications such as Openwave Download Fun and Openwave Mobile Instant Messaging. Openwave's standards-based open architecture platform is designed to allow China Unicom to deploy their mobile data services quickly, and have a smooth
transition to the next generation CDMA 1X-RTT network which is expected to be in commercial service by the end of this year. With this latest CDMA technology, which is designed to provide "always on", higher quality bandwidth and faster data transmission speed at a more efficient spectrum cost, China Unicom is expected to enjoy a technology leapfrog in achieving fast success with mobile data.
"China is the world's largest telecommunications market with almost 145 million wireless subscribers currently, and we believe that CDMA data will drive China's cellular growth," said Mr. Zhang Fan, general manager, mobile communications business department of China United Telecommunications Corporation. "CDMA will be marketed as a superior quality and advanced data service that will give our customers the freedom to stay connected to the most important information and services, while leading a highly demanding lifestyle. We believe that the Services OS platform, which Openwave has built as an open architecture and compliant with international standards, will power the rapid adoption of data and value-added services over our new CDMA network while positioning us well for future growth."
