In a world of mass production, handmade items have gained a new status.

Maybe that’s why the popularity of sewing is soaring, with 10.6 million posts with the hashtag #sewing on Instagram, and a search for the word “sewing” on YouTube producing 222 million results. Think about it: no copycat items, no sweat shop labour, just your own, personal creation.

In our increasingly hectic world, there’s also no doubt that the rise of sewing is about the enjoyment to be had from getting into a “flow” state1, that releases stress and calms your nervous system.

Creating the flow effect

1. Choose a project that stretches your skills slightly but isn’t overwhelming. Rather than making a dress from scratch, you may like to start with a simple skirt using a paper pattern.
2. Work with colours, prints and fabric varieties that speak to you.
3. Decide what you plan to tackle for each session. Having a clear goal will help you focus on the sewing and stay calm.
4. Select an easy-to-use sewing machine compatible with the fabrics you want to work with. Try Brother’s Tailored2You range, that has something for every sewist and every project. (brother.com.au/tailored2you
5. Create a sewing space away from noise and other distractions. Maybe even turn off your mobile phone! Having a storage space for your fabrics and threads is a good idea too.

So, if you’ve caught the sewing bug, but don’t have the equipment, how do you choose the right sewing machine for you?

Enter three new machines from Brother, available exclusively at Spotlight from January 2020, they are designed to make sewing easy from start to successful finish.

Whether you’re exploring sewing as a new hobby, or searching for a machine that will let you to sew a wide variety of fabrics, there’s an option to suit you.

The TY200A (RRP$300), with 14 stitches with pre-set stitch width and length, is super easy to use and gives you a professional finish from your very first project. Ideal if you are just starting out. The TY400G (RRP$450), is a versatile all-rounder, with 37 stitches, it also includes stitches to sew stretch fabrics like t-shirt jersey and comes with a wide table that expands your sewing workspace to make large projects easier.

For extra power choose the TY600C (RRP$649) that is built to handle a wide variety of fabrics. Denim and heavy weight fabrics feed through easily. But it also produces smooth, even stitching on athleisurewear, swimwear and formal wear. No wonder Brother was the brand of choice on Project Runway.

“Whatever you want to make, we have a machine that suits you and what you want to do,” says Julia Springbett, Marketing Manager of Home Sewing Machines.

“With the Tailored2You range you simply pick a machine that suits the fabrics you want to sew. Finding a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly is tricky. We think finding the right sewing machine shouldn’t have to be.”

So stop dreaming and start making. With these clever machines, it’s easy to get into the flow.
