Fur, Flicks and Flowers as Barefoot Cinema starts rolling at Rippon Lea Estate

Announcement posted by Tracado 04 Feb 2020

Barefoot Cinema returns to the iconic Rippon Lea Estate once again from 29 January to 16 February, lighting up the magical garden oasis and the majestic heritage-listed mansion with 19 films over the three-week period, offering a respite from the busy working week and a step back in time.

The uniquely tranquil setting of the 14 acres of lush gardens, complete with elm, oak and fig trees, lawns galore, a lake, a fernery and a coach house in which the stunning late 19th century 33-room mansion sits nestled in, makes this one of the most beautiful boutique outdoor cinema experiences in Australia.

In addition to the film offering there will be a fully stocked bar with beverages from Aperol Spritz, Babo Wines and Matso’s, hearty food offerings by 400 Gradi, waffles by Propa Coffee, live music, lawn games and surprise giveaways.

Because Barefoot Cinema knows Melbourne (and just how popular our pooches are), Grease on Sunday 9 February will be a Dog Friendly event, and a rare opportunity to share a night out with our favourite furry friends for one exclusive screening. With 40% of households owning a pet, and over 60% of those being Dogs, it’s expected to be quite a pat-tastic spectacle!

Barefoot Cinema’s Surfing Nights have become a fixture of the program every year. Because of the coastal heritage of the outdoor film event, and combined with festive summer vibes, it lends perfectly to a celebration of surf culture.

On the 11th of February, Barefoot Cinema will be screening Momentum Generation. Rating 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, directors Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s eloquent documentary features surfing icons Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Ross Williams, Shane Dorian and more, telling the story of a ragtag community of teenage surfers and how they brought their sport to unprecedented heights. Barefoot Cinema will once again be partnering with OneWave Charity – the non-profit surf community raising awareness of mental health, through saltwater therapy, surfing and fluro. Cinema goers can donate during the ticket purchase process or on the night.

Valentine’s Day on the 14th will screen the iconic romantic tragedy of Romeo + Juliet by Baz Luhrmann, making for the perfect date night, or a great night under the starts for a ‘galantine’s day’ with friends. The first 300 Cinema-goers through the gate will receive a rose each from Elwood Flowers , with plenty of classic Italian fare by Gradi Group to indulge in, accompanied by Italian wine varietals from Babo Wines and many delicious goods from the Carman’s sampling station.

Barefoot Cinema is also delighted to announce a partnership with Melbourne Queer Film Festival, coming into its 30th year with a special screening at Rippon Lea Estate, staging a night to remember with a screening of the legendary modern classic The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert on the 15th of February. Before the film, there will be live music and surprise giveaways, plus a sneak peek of the 2020 MQFF program for their festival in March.

The season has some great flicks for a girls night out including the delightful Little Women, star-studded Bombshell, featuring Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Downton Abbey – made complete by the idyllic setting at the historic estate.

Families will love letting the little ones loose and then settling on a picnic blanket with Aladdin, Frozen 2, and Cats.

Music lovers can rejoice with Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, while those seeking some action will love Ford Vs Ferrari, The Joker, and Knives Out.
