STUDENTS TO HEROES, LEADING THE CHARGE IN STOCKLAND NATIONAL BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM

Announcement posted by NTC 05 Mar 2020

Students across Australia lead the charge with the battery recycling challenge The Big Battery Rescue

Over 5,000 students across Australia are about to become Battery Recycling Superheroes as they take part in The Big Battery Rescue sponsored by Stockland in partnership with The National Theatre for Children (NTC). Running throughout school year 2020, students will be engaged, enlightened and electrified to take up the challenge to collect used batteries and divert them from landfill.

The Big Battery Rescue is a national school challenge providing schools with a free education program alongside battery recycling buckets for every classroom and a year-round collection and recycling service.

Penny Austin, Stockland Sustainability Manager, said this was the fourth consecutive year Stockland had partnered with the National Theatre for Children (NTC) to deliver new learning experiences.

“Stockland is a world leader in sustainability and we’re proud to support this unique program for another year which helps to empower the next generation of innovators.”

“We are very pleased to partner with The National Theatre for Children in their presentation and tour of this fun play and to support the education of the next generation.”

The program kicks off with a live-in-school educational theatre performance of The Energized Guyz & The Battery Bandit by two professional performers who lead grade P-6 students on an action-packed adventure, while teaching about battery recycling, conservation and STEM!

In conjunction with the live performances, the program includes student workbooks (print and online versions), teacher guides, info-graphic posters and digital games and activities that align with the important educational concepts.

During the year, participating schools and their students will then lead the charge to divert hazardous batteries from landfill by collecting them from home and across their community and dropping them into the school battery buckets. Every school and student will be able to measure and track their recycling effort and environmental impact.

All aspects of the battery recycling program are sponsored by Stockland, negating any costs to individual schools and making the performances and materials a cost-free supplement to curriculum-aligned lessons in science, literacy and the arts. Participating schools will also be rewarded for their environmental effort based on the amount of batteries recycled ranging from $200 – $1,000!

“Live theatre is a great way to educate,” said NTC Managing Director Tobias Benn. “The show goes beyond reading or other more passive methods of engaging children. We don’t lose their attention for a minute, because they get to respond and interact with the show. It really sticks with them and this is what causes the take-up of positive action and the community wide effort around battery recycling.”

The Energized Guyz & The Battery Bandit will launch its national tour as part of The Big Battery Rescue school challenge in Melbourne during the week beginning Monday 9th March 2020.
