Eaton expands outdoor pole solution powering 5G small cells

Announcement posted by Primary Communication 25 Aug 2020

Telecom networks will be able to remote monitor and control power usage of 5G small cell deployments
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. Power management company Eaton, today announced the availability of its Eaton® Outdoor Pole Solution (OPS2) with energy saving 5G remote radio capability enabling network operators to build denser networks, meet performance demands and maintain low energy consumption.

The OPS2 is a DC power system intended to power telecom 4G & 5G remote radio units (RRU’s), CCTV, and industrial IoT equipment.

Darren Salter, Eaton APAC Product Manager said the OPS2 is designed for ease of deployment and delivers industry leading power efficiency leading to significant cost savings for Telecom operators over time.

“Energy consumption will increase dramatically if 5G is deployed in the same way previous generations were deployed. In the past, densifying networks implied high energy outputs which amassed to substantial operator expense,” said Salter.

“The OPS2 is designed to flatten the energy curve for network operators while enabling dense network deployments, reducing operational costs and environmental impacts. Traditional base stations can't service the capacity required to realise safe and efficient 5G connections. Eaton have engineered a superior OPS module, which is compact for ease of installation, while providing highly efficient AC-DC power conversion and battery backup.”

The OPS2 features include:
  • Remote Control: Full remote monitoring and control using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Web interfaces enabling Telecom Network Operators to manage the power usage of their 5G small cell deployments.
  • Battery: Third party Lithium ion batteries can be connected to the OPS2 to enable small cells to have no break Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) power in critical locations.
  • Airflow and Cooling: Rectifier fan internally circulates air and increases thermal efficiency producing less heat, requiring less cooling.
  • Design: Compact and rear-mountable design with IP65 environmentally hardened system for placement high on poles, masts, building facades away from street level gaze, and close to the 5G small cell equipment its powering.

The new OPS2 is available now in ANZ.
