As National Child Protection Week runs until this Friday 11^th September, Gold Coast foster care mum Corinna Essa reveals shocking statistics in the significant rise in the number of children in foster care in Australia and the rest of the world during her TED TALK  Corinna Essa - What I Learned from Fostering 40 Children delivered at the invitation of the global TED organisation.

Corinna says “48,000 children are in foster care in Australia, a rise of 50% since 2013, more than 690,000 children in the US spent time in foster care in 2017, an increase of 58% since 1990. It’s just as bad in the UK with a record number of 140,000 children in care or at risk.Canada has one of the highest rates of kids in care in the world, with as muchas 7.5 per cent of all children under 7 having been placed in care at some point in their lives in certain areas of the country.New Zealand is plagued with one of thehighest rates of child abuse in the developed world, with 3% of children having been in foster care or alternative care by the age of 17 and almost 10% have been subject to abuse or neglect.”.

Corinna and her husband Steven, have been temporary and emergency foster carers for several years, taking in children of all ages who have suffered from physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Corinna discusses in her talk that she believes, “globalization and offshoring of jobs, the era of sexual liberation, an increasingly secular society and loss of traditional values are the 4 trends in our modern world that have gone hand in hand with the shocking statistics related to children in care”.
