LOCAL MAN REGAINS VISION AND INDEPENDENCE THROUGH ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Announcement posted by Thurnham Teece 10 Nov 2020

Local Finley man Graeme Radford aged 54 years has suffered from minimal vision, due to losing one eye in an accident aged 22. Coupled with this, Graeme was diagnosed with Cone Dystrophy which is an inherited ocular disorder involving loss of cone cells .The vision loss has impacted Graeme’s life, robbing him of his independence, relying on his mother Pat to help him navigate his life.

This changed significantly a few months ago when Graeme visited a Vison Australia office where he was introduced to IrisVision, the world’s first visual assistive device built on wearable VR technology to help vision-impaired people regain their sight, achieve independence and do the things they love. A Vision Australia consultant arranged for Graeme to apply for funding form NDIS and assisted him with the application process, which was successful.

For Graeme, what he loves in his lawn bowls (he can now see the kitty when be bowls,) his beloved horse races and watching his footy team the Saints on television.

Before IrisVision none of these lifestyles pleasure was possible, and Graeme’s Mum Pat had to read the paper to him. Graeme says “IrisVision has helped me so much. I can watch the races on TV and then read the results. It’s so good to have some independence and be able to read myself rather than rely on other people. The device is so good I’ve recommended it to my uncle who also has Cone Dystrophy”

Many other Australians with eye conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pimentosa are finding benefit from the life changing technology
