BigAir sets sights on broadband speeds up to 50 times faster than ADSL2+

Announcement posted by BigAir Group 21 Nov 2006

BigAir Group Limited (ASX:BGL) has unveiled plans to significantly boost its broadband presence in Australia at the company’s AGM held in Sydney today.
As broadband becomes viewed as the next utility* and the Australian regulator continues to be at loggerheads with the last mile copper network owner, Telstra, over broadband access for Australians. BigAir is set to heat things up with unprecedented broadband speeds.
Within the next year, BigAir plans to release its next generation of wireless broadband services offering symmetric speeds up to 1Gbit per second (50 times faster than the maximum download speed and 1000 times faster than the standard upload speed offered on ADSL2+ systems).
“Following recent network capacity expansion, we are already offering speeds up to 100Mbps across our Sydney network - this is already many times faster than the maximum download rates achievable on ADSL2+, and it’s a full 100 times faster for sending data” said BigAir CEO Jason Ashton. “However even those super fast speeds pale in comparison to what’s coming next,” he added.
BigAir is also planning to build an additional 10 wireless basestations within the next year to meet growing customer demand for its symmetric business-grade broadband services.
Since its recent launch in September BigAir’s wholesale channel has grown significantly with 10 partners already signed up and negotiations progressing with an additional 25 potential partners.
BigAir also revealed a financial update with its annualised revenue run rate having already reached $9.5 million as at October, a significant increase over the previous full year result of $6.9m.
To keep Australia competitive with the rest of the world, BigAir is now testing future generation gigabit-class wireless services, for delivery next year, offering symmetric speeds of 1 Gigabit per second. BigAir’s gigabit-class wireless services will enable high end enterprise applications including disaster recovery as well as super-fast Internet applications, whilst avoiding the heavy construction costs associated with fiber-optic network deployments.
