DEAKIN RESEARCH PAPER MAPS OUT GEELONG’S FUTURE

Announcement posted by Infotech Marketing & Communications Pty Ltd 11 Mar 2021

Briefing to recommend post COVID-19 actions

What Geelong must do to ensure the best possible recovery after COVID-19 is the subject of a briefing being held at the end of this month by community group, Geelong Sustainability.

Resilient Geelong: What, Why, How will explore the findings of a research paper prepared by Deakin University for the Committee for Geelong.

By taking action about climate through the use of renewable energy the city and region can look forward to the creation of almost three times as many jobs as a fossil fuel-led recovery, enhancing economic recovery and social equity.

The Resilient Geelong report outlines how the city can address the long lasting social, economic and emotional effects caused by the pandemic.

Jennifer Cromarty, CEO of the Committee for Geelong said “Deakin’s research highlights the need for a different approach to education and training so Geelong can capitalise on the industries and jobs being created by new technology.  The research also paints a very positive picture of what it will be like to live in a more connected and sustainable city.”

Among the changes outlined in the report are “live locally” principles that will lead to more sustainable environments with employment, education, health, recreation and other services located within easy reach of where people live.
