Social enterprise Enova Community Energy adds unique ethical option into South East Queensland electricity marketplace

Announcement posted by Enova Energy 16 Mar 2021

South East Queensland households and businesses now have a social enterprise energy company that’s community-owned to consider in their choice of electricity provider, with Enova Community Energy having expanded its offerings into Queensland’s south east.

Enova Community Energy is Australia's first community-owned energy provider established as a social enterprise that reinvests 50 per cent of its profits back into community-owned energy initiatives, energy efficiency and education to act on climate change.

CEO Felicity Stening said, “Our offering is unique in South East Queensland as we were established specifically to support communities to work toward becoming energy self sufficient. We’re paving the way for towns and suburbs to generate, store and share their own energy locally, from renewable energy and storage and move away from coal-fired power delivered long distance via expensive powerlines.”

The company was founded in 2016 in the Northern Rivers of NSW as a direct outcome of protests against coal seam gas fracking and the community’s drive towards alternative energy models. More than 1,600 individual Australian shareholders have invested and the company already has close to 10,000 customers throughout NSW.

Already more than 60 per cent of Enova’s customers have roof top solar panels, so up to half of its energy supply comes from its own customers’ solar rooftops and the remainder is carbon offset.

As a social enterprise 50% of Enova’s profits are directed into initiatives to facilitate this vision through its projects and registered not-for-profit charity arm.

Its projects include a microgrid, a shared community battery, solar gardens, community solar installations and energy efficiency coaching.

Anyone in South East Queensland can now switch their energy to Enova and receive either a $100 credit on their first electricity bill or nominate to have Enova donate the $100 to Brisbane-based Community Living Association on their behalf.  Customers can call (02) 5622 1700 or visit www.enovaenergy.com.au to switch.

Enova Community Energy is Australia’s first community-owned energy retailer, formed as a social enterprise to reduce carbon emissions and facilitate the transition to a renewable energy future, by building sustainable and resilient communities, where renewable energy is accessible by all.  Enova is wholly Australian owned and operated.
