Secureworks Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2022 Results

June 03, 2021 - Secureworks (NASDAQ: SCWX), a global leader in cybersecurity, today announced financial results for its first quarter, which ended on April 30, 2021.

Key Highlights

  • 500 customers on cloud-native Secureworks Taegis™ platform, resulting in annual recurring revenue (ARR) growth for the product of 191 percent on a year-over-year basis and 32 percent sequentially from the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2021, to end the first quarter of fiscal 2022 at $72 million.
  • For the quarter, GAAP gross margin increased to a record 59.0 percent and non-GAAP gross margin increased to a record 61.9 percent.
  • Taegis MDR was named a Leader in the Forrester 2021 MDR Wave.
  • Raising full fiscal year 2022 guidance for revenue to a range of $540 to $550 million and for Adjusted EBITDA to a range of $5 million negative to $5 million positive. Confirming Taegis guidance of at least $150 million ARR by end of fiscal year 2022 and Taegis revenue of $90 to $100 million for fiscal year 2022.

Financial Summary

“We’re pleased with our first quarter results and start of the fiscal year, with $17.5 million added to Taegis ARR this quarter, up 35% from the $12.9 million Taegis ARR added in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021,” said Paul Parrish, chief financial officer, Secureworks. “Further, we’re encouraged by the improvements in Adjusted EBITDA and increased outlook for the year.”

First Quarter Fiscal 2022 Financial Results Highlights

  • For the first quarter of fiscal 2022, GAAP revenue decreased 1.2 percent to $139.5 million from $141.2 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2021.
  • GAAP gross margin was 59.0 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2022, compared with 55.4 percent in the same period last year. Non-GAAP gross margin was 61.9 percent compared with 58.1 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2021.
  • GAAP net loss was $6.4 million, or $0.08 per share, in the first quarter of fiscal 2022, compared with $7.5 million, or $0.09 per share, in the prior year. Non-GAAP net income was $4.0 million, or $0.05 per share, in the first quarter of fiscal 2022, compared with $2.5 million, or $0.03 per share, in the same prior year period.
  • Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was $8.1 million, compared with $5.6 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2021.
  • Secureworks ended the first quarter with $181 million in cash and cash equivalents.
     

Business and Operational Highlights

  • Secureworks and Dell Technologies jointly announced the new Dell Technologies Managed Detection and Response service powered by Secureworks Taegis XDR, to secure businesses’ IT environments with fully managed, 24/7 service monitoring, detection and response to threats.
  • Secureworks was recognised as a leader and “…fresh alternative” among top managed detection and response providers for its Taegis ManagedXDR solution in "The Forrester Wave™: Managed Detection and Response, Q1 2021” report.
  • Secureworks’ global partner program was honoured with a 5-Star Rating in the 2021 CRN® Partner Program Guide, recognising an exclusive group of companies that offer solution providers the best partner programs.
  • During the first quarter of fiscal 2022, Secureworks launched its new Taegis XDR Adversary Software Coverage (ASC) tool providing customers with granular detection visibility against real threats as mapped by the MITRE ATT&CK framework.

Financial Outlook

For the second quarter of fiscal 2022, the Company expects:

  • Revenue of $134 to $136 million.
  • GAAP net loss per share of $0.13 to $0.15 and per share performance on a non-GAAP basis between breakeven and a $0.03 loss.

For the full fiscal year 2022, the Company expects:

  • Revenue of $540 to $550 million, reflecting our shift toward partner-delivered services as we scale our MSSP program.
  • GAAP net loss of $48 to $57 million and $0.59 to $0.70 on a per share basis.
  • Non-GAAP net loss of $3 to $10 million and $0.04 to $0.13 on a per share basis, primarily reflecting incremental investments in both R&D to extend the Taegis platform and in sales and marketing related to the expansion of our Partner Program and promotion of Taegis.
  • Adjusted EBITDA in a range of $5 million negative to $5 million positive for the full year.
  • Cash flow from operations to range from breakeven to a $10 million source of cash.
  • Taegis ARR of at least $150 million at the end of fiscal year 2022, which implies Taegis revenue of $90 to $100 million for fiscal year 2022, as we ramp new customer acquisitions and accelerate the transition of existing customers looking to benefit from the additional capabilities offered by the new platform.

Operating Metrics

The Company defines annual recurring revenue (ARR) as the value of its subscription contracts as of a particular date. Because the Company uses recurring revenue as a leading indicator of future annual revenue, it includes operational backlog. Operational backlog is defined as the recurring revenue associated with pending contracts, which are contracts that have been sold but for which the service period has not yet commenced.
