LOCAL SCIENTIST BACK AT WORK AFTER LOSING VISION - THANKS TO ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Announcement posted by Thurnham Teece 06 Jul 2021

In 2018, without warning, Dr Terry Mernagh, suddenly lost a significant part of his vision overnight. He was subsequently diagnosed with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition typically causes sudden vision loss, without any pain. In 2019 he also lost some sight in his second eye.

Terry is a mineralogist by career, and an Emeritus Associate Professor at the Australian National University. Losing the ability to see compromised his study of mineral deposits, and potentially his career. However, this situation changed when Terry visited a Vision Australia Store in Canberra where he road tested many devices including IrisVision.

IrisVision employs breakthrough, smart software technology that leverages functional areas of the user’s eyes to enable them to see objects, faces and their surroundings more clearly and easily. It features powerful connectivity tools for greater engagement with the world, and packages it all in an award-winning, voice-controlled device that makes it easy for anyone to use.

Dr. Terry Mernagh describes IrisVision as a life changer, a device he uses every day. As a mineralogist the hands-free capability allows him to examine rocks and keep working in an area he loves. Doing craft, repairs & watching television are some of the ways IrisVision enhances his daily life since his vision loss.

Terry’s wife Lyn comments on the positive affect IrisVision has had on Terry’s lifestyle. “After losing his sight, Terry was understandable depressed and bored, however IrisVision made it possible for him to go back to his chosen career. He carries IrisVision everywhere and not a day goes by when he doesn’t use the technology in his work or just for daily tasks and hobbies.”
