Movement at the station: ‘Brumby Block’ up for sale for the first time in a quarter of a century

It has formed part of the breeding ground for some of New South Wales’ finest thoroughbreds, but now the aptly named “Brumby Block” between Canberra and Murrumbateman is on the market ready for its next chapter.

Sue and Peter White have subdivided 20.28 hectares (50 acres) from their main property, making available three paddocks as they look to downsize.

Coincidentally, the name “Brumby Block” doesn’t come from the couple’s love of horses – Peter is known as a “horse whisperer” and along with breeding horses, has a horse transport business, while Sue has loved horses since she was a girl growing up in Sydney, desperate to one day find a place she could have her own.

“When we bought the block, we bought it from a man named Brumby,” Sue said.

The productive soil and ideal location, being just minutes from the Barton Highway and close to Canberra where Sue works, appealed to the Whites when they bought the land in 1996.

“I grew up in Sydney but I had family with a farm where I would go every school holiday and ride horses,” Sue said. “I never wanted to go back home. When I moved from Sydney it was always a condition that I would buy somewhere I could have a horse.”

Not long after buying “Brumby Block”, the Whites took part in a Greening Australia initiative, “Corridors of Green”.

“We encouraged our neighbours to also get involved with the program, so there is a corridor of trees that link up and it provides a way for wildlife to get to the Murrumbidgee as well as doubling as shelter and privacy for the property.”

While the Whites have run cattle and horses on the property, Sue believes the productive soils and climate conditions means the pursuits into other stock or viticulture would also be successful.

“It’s certainly an area really suited to grape production and it can manage other enterprises – up the road there is someone who has started commercially growing hazelnut trees.”

Accessed by an all-weather unsealed road just minutes from the Barton Highway, the property is serviced by a large 1-megalitre dam, quality fencing and well nurtured soils thanks to a meticulous fertiliser and weed control program.

Agent George Southwell said it was rare for a land offering of this size so close to Canberra and Murrumbateman to come onto the market.

“This property has been with the same family for the past 25 years and the surrounding properties have also stayed within families and have not been divided into smaller allotments.

“Covid has certainly seen city dwellers want a slice of country living and this is the perfect opportunity to enter the market, not only being able to purchase picturesque land to enjoy, but to build the dream home.”
