Announcement posted by Styelle Swim 29 Sep 2021
Styelle Swim, founded by designer Charys Caldarella in 2016, is on track to becoming Australia’s most sustainable swimwear brand. Along with selling a range of head-turning bathers and bikinis, Styelle is making waves in the world of sustainability.

Within two years of launching, Styelle started using Amni Soul Eco, Fluity CO2 fabric, a completely biodegradable material made using plant-based filament and a specially formulated nylon blend, that’s been designed to break down completely within 10 years of being discarded.
“Our swimwear won’t decompose while you’re wearing it!” Charys laughs. “It has to be disposed of in a treatment plant, but the runoff won’t end up in the ocean.”
A year later, in 2019, Styelle Swim achieved carbon neutral status through Greenfleet, and this year the brand was officially recognised as being carbon positive, meaning they offset more carbon than they emit. For every purchase made through the Styelle website, the team at One Tree Planted plants a tree, and customers have the option to plant an additional tree for just $1 at the checkout.
The team is also halfway through the rigorous process of achieving B Corp certification. Certified B Corporations meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.
If that’s not enough, it is the first swimwear brand to partner with Upparel – which reuses, recycles, and up-cycles unwanted clothing and fabric giving new life to old materials and keeps it out of the landfill.
“We’ve been actively fighting fast fashion since we launched,” founder plans the production in a way to create exact quantities of her swimwear (via wholesale orders), so as not to overproduce. “When we launched, no one took us seriously. People told me no one cared about ethical or sustainable businesses – they said consumers just want something cheap, however, I would still not say that we have perfected everything. It’s a process. But we consistently push to find new ways to make Styelle more sustainable as each year passes.”
Charys was recently interviewed by the team at Bank Australia about her business, the importance of sustainability in fashion, and why she made the switch to an ethical bank.
“They’re a people-owned bank, they’re inclusive, and they’re not invested in making money off you – they’re making money for you,”
The other important factor that sets Styelle apart from other swimwear brands is that they “sell awesome swimwear that is absolutely gorgeous,” Charys says, who has a background in couture design. “It fits beautifully. And even though we’re an off-the-shelf brand, we don’t feel like an off-the-shelf brand. Moreover, we are excited to allocate the residues without harming the environment and use recycled water in our fabrication and dying processes.”
