The invaders found themselves caught in a nightmare scenario: they could not advance, but how was it possible to retreat from trenches overlooked by the Turks? Who would take the responsibility for the hard decisions to be taken? The soldiers? Or the vacillating politicians busy ‘passing the buck’ back home in London? But before I had even finished recording it I heard the news of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and more and more who died as a result of police brutality. That said, not only did MediaHub achieve this incredible feat during these recent and most challenging of times, but they did so without any interruption of service to their many clients.   Head of broadcast operations, Scott Jolly explained, “As part of the mitigation of COVID-19 impacting MediaHub operations, the MediaHub Senior Management Team made the decision early to move to remote working wherever possible. The consequence of a COVID-19 outbreak within the facility would have been very serious for all concerned. This meant investing in additional devices including laptops, Chromecasts®, tablets and monitors for each of the team, allowing each operator to recreate their workspace at home in a familiar set up.”   MediaHub’s smart investment and the fact many of their platforms are cloud based enabled them to move ingest, playout, network operations centre (NOC), IT and engineering support teams to remote operations quickly and seamlessly.   MediaHub head of technology, Simon Scott added, “We collaborated with a number of vendor partners such as Magna Systems, Grass Valley, Akamai and RTS to set up our users with a fully-functioning WFH solution. This included GV for remote control platform software, Akamai for CDN and security services and RTS VLink Virtual Comms to extend our talkback system over the internet. This integrated solution meant that not only had we achieved a level of sophistication that enabled our staff to completely operate the system from home, but there were significant savings in terms of operations space and equipment as we didn’t need to build a remote Disaster Recovery suite.”   This smart solution also meant MediaHub could operate under any possible broadcast scenario quite easily, without restrictions, quickly and efficiently without any negative impact in Service Level Agreements (SLA) for any of MediaHub’s clients.   The smarts didn’t stop there as MediaHub also provided low latency live streams of their monitoring multi-viewer outputs delivered using Akamai CDN and via standard streaming players to their users in their homes. This meant the MediaHub team could now see their monitoring screens on their standard home TV – a major part of the WFH solution.    One of the early challenges MediaHub did face however, was how to deliver a full featured ‘at home’ experience for their operations team when clearly they had no control over their team members’ ISP at home and no choice in their users’ connectivity which varied between 4G, 5G, FTTN, FTTP and HFC. All of which in turn affected the home user’s ISP network congestion during their most active periods.    Scott added, “Operators on shift changeover, or in certain scenarios for live sports or news programming have overlapping access to live video feeds and systems, meaning more than one operator may require access to the same multi-viewer generated screen. So we made a call early into the process to adopt a live OTT approach to the WFH solution. We partnered with Akamai to deliver this consistent delivery to our users across their CDN platform regardless of their ISP access. This allowed ease of access to the streams by any of the devices our staff were using and flexibility to scale out the number of people monitoring the streams.” Security was a key issue within the MediaHub WFH solution and one they solved by again partnering with Akamai to provide distributed and encrypted remote access service to their systems. In 2019, after being inspired by aerial artists that focus on higher elevation compositions, Brad began an ongoing project to capture people from a lower elevation in what he defines “the aerial portrait ‘sweet spot’, too high for handheld DSLRs but low enough to capture the fine detail”. Since then, Brad has been able to capture a broad range of people from above, gaining worldwide recognition and an array of awards along the way.  When Brad first began his pursuit of aerial photography, drones were only just reaching the market. Despite the rapid evolutions in drone technology over the recent years, Brad keeps it simple, focusing on the basics of composition rather than the newest and latest gear. Brad says “I use a drone to as a vehicle to capture a new perspective.” Brad’s work primarily focuses on people from above, saying “most aerial photography today turns a blind eye to the most beautiful element of our world, being us.”  Inspired by the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo (now deferred to 2021) Brad targetted Synchronized swimming, gymnastics, tennis & ice skating as disciplines that would be most appealing from above  “Besides the aesthetic aspect, I am also trying to provide a new perspective to sports which have little coverage outside the Olympic season” In 2020 Brad won an award in the annual Skypixel awards from over 30,000 entries for his work with a Sydney synchronized swimming team. The winning photo looked at the unique geometrical patterns synchronized swimmers - often overlooked when watching from side-on. Together In Art Kids is an online art project designed to inspire and support young people during this uncertain time by offering them the chance to participate in a shared creative endeavour. The project invites children aged 5 – 12 to use materials available in their home to create an artwork to a theme, which can then be photographed and submitted online. The next round features Indonesian-Australian artist Jumaadi, who has chosen the theme ‘Special to Me’, inviting children to create an artwork of someone, something or somewhere special to them. “As children here in Australia begin to return to school, many more children around the world remain isolated from their friends and community and we are all experiencing a mix of emotions,” Jumaadi said. “In times like these, I like to create pictures of my friends, loved ones, family – those near and far – and I like to draw from my fond memories of special places in my mind. Those things excite me to make more pictures. But more than that, they give me a kind of comfort,” he added. Launched last month, the first instalment of the project was inspired by the theme ‘Inner Worlds’, chosen by first participating artist Del Kathryn Barton. A curated online exhibition of 25 themed artworks can be viewed now on the newly launched Together In Art website, alongside a gallery of all 790 submissions.
