Early warning of drone activity is the key to countering threats, and R&S ARDRONIS can detect activity even before drones take off. “Rohde & Schwarz is acutely aware of the dangers posed by unauthorized drone activity,” stated Gareth Evans, Managing Director of Rohde & Schwarz (Australia). “The disruption at Gatwick Airport in the UK has highlighted the emerging threat not only to lives, but also to economic activities and critical infrastructures. “We are not alone in this; the 2019 Five Country Ministerial communiqué about emerging threats has identified that, ‘the malicious, unlawful, or inadvertent misuse of drones and the data they collect can pose a risk to public safety, be deliberately used to facilitate or commit a wide range of criminal acts, and also present a threat to our national security.’ “Australian and New Zealand customers will be offered the R&S ARDRONIS-D model of the automatic radio-controlled drone identification solution, which locates the drone operator and the drone.” This R&S ARDRONIS package reports when a remote control has been switched on and classifies the device type. The sensor system captures the uplink, so it can track down drone pilots while their aerial devices are still on the ground. The first go-live of R&S ARDONIS was at the 2015 G7 summit in Elmau, Germany. Since then the system has proven itself many times over during state visits and political summits. Mr Wills said it was a privilege to compete against international innovators and have Microba recognised as a world-leader. “To be able to showcase Microba’s capabilities as an innovative hub to international leaders and subject-matter experts is an excellent outcome,” he said. “Our technology is world-leading, innovative and growing its reach rapidly, allowing us to expand into international markets. “To fly halfway across the world and present our work at a globally-renowned conference is a great indicator that we are on the right track and can continue to grow in our research and impact on the global health care industry.” Microba is a home-grown Brisbane-based startup, with its roots coming from research of Co-founders Professors Phillip Hugenholtz and Gene Tyson at The University of Queensland. The company recently announced expansion into the United States with its MAP™ platform through a partnership with DNA sequencing company, Macrogen. Beam promotes jobs growth in South Australia 2019-11-10T02:16:49Z economic-development-amp-jobs-growth-beams Sunday 10 November 2019 Media Release  Beam promotes jobs growth in South Australia New jobs created and new industries boosted by e-scooter company Beam Getting an affordable and easy ride on an electric scooter is not the only benefit the growing industry has delivered to South Australia says the e-scooter company, Beam.  Since its success in being chosen to operate e-scooters in March of this year, the company has made Adelaide home and created brand new jobs in specialised functions uncommon in Adelaide’s tech industry. It says it is also attracting new talent to South Australia, helping to arrest the historical trend of negative migration.  Since launching in South Australia, Beam has created 25 new jobs - a mix of full-time and part-time team members. This does not include the additional flexible economic opportunities to a group of ‘Chargers’ who are independent contractors that assist to charge the scooters. Beam’s Head of Public Affairs Brad Kitschke says that Beam is having a significant positive impact on jobs growth and that this is especially important when South Australia has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.  “We have created new jobs in the following areas; General Management, Operations Specialists and Analysts, Marketing and Community Engagement, Warehouse Management, Mechanics, Marshalls and Logistics Specialists. “ “Roles like these don’t often come about in the start-up and tech spaces based in Adelaide. Many of these functions are usually conducted in a satellite fashion from Sydney or Melbourne. We have chosen to sink roots into the community and ensure that our team is always local.” “A few weeks ago, I attended an event where the Premier spoke about his vision for South Australia’s economy with a focus on four important areas; Exports, Technology, Migration to the State, and Job Creation. Our business ticks three of those four categories.  We have attracted talent, with members of our team who hail from overseas specifically choosing Adelaide, owing to the availability of these kinds of employment opportunities. We have created specialist tech roles not usually seen in Adelaide and we have a pathway to create many more if we are permitted to, Mr Kitschke said.   Operations Specialists, Nicole Ricciardi and Belle Lim examine use patterns in Adelaide CBD.  Nicole Ricciardi is American born and has previously held roles with PepsiCo and Mitsubishi but she says she jumped at the chance to take on a data-driven role at Beam. “Jobs like this don’t come around that often in the tech industry in South Australia. To run the business every day we are knee-deep in data, analysing trends with a focus on the most efficient ways to use our vehicles”  Belle Lim, a Singapore native, says that it's fantastic to be part of a growing company with a positive focus. “I love it when I talk to my friends both overseas and interstate and tell them about what we are doing in Adelaide. It has definitely increased the interest that people in startups and tech have about moving to Adelaide, and it’s awesome that these opportunities will be available for people who grew up here who won’t need to move if they want to work in these fields.”  Jobs growth and economic activity do not just come from the roles Beam employ directly. One such significant partnership Beam is focussing on is with Specialised Solar Solutions. The two companies are working together to design and build prototype solar-powered charging stations for e-scooters.  Mr Kitschke says that Specialised Solar Solutions had a background in designing furniture for playground and leisure areas like park benches. The two companies got together recognising the opportunity and need to incorporate solar charging in existing furniture for e-scooters, and promote new concepts for scooter charging. “Specialised Solar Solutions already had a track record of designing new and innovative street furniture that is solar powered so that is a great start because in the future they should all be able to plug an e-scooter in and charge it.  We are also leading the industry by designing a prototype e-scooter charger that could work with our preferred parking stations. It makes sense that if we incentivise someone to leave the scooter in a specific location to keep the streets clean, they should also be able to plug it into a charger which has renewable energy as a power source.”  “This focus is really about industry leadership. While the industry says it is sustainable, some companies are charging scooters with electricity generated from non-renewable sources and scooters have to be collected and transported which increases carbon emissions. If we can charge scooters on-site with dollar there is a dual benefit and we are living up to our sustainability promise.” As someone who grew up in South Australia, I know all too well the devastation that the closure of Mitsubishi South Australian manufacturing had on the economy and the impact it had on families.   We are really excited to be working with Bronte and his team at Specialised Solar Solutions to create new jobs in green industries for South Australian manufacturers. While at this stage we are just designing and developing prototypes, we hope that this is the start of a partnership that drives more economic growth and sees Bronte and companies like his export his designs and intellectual property as interstate and overseas jurisdictions look at the role of solar in the e-scooter industry. Mr Kitschke concluded.  Media Enquiries  Brad Kitschke Head of Public Affairs 61 403 809 630 Brad@ridebeam.com  TasmaNet is accelerating Aussie expansion through Partners 2019-11-06T22:55:03Z tasmanet-is-accelerating-aussie-expansion-through-partners TasmaNet is attracting partners around Australia keen to take advantage of the potential of the new nbnTM Enterprise Ethernet service for their business, enterprise and government customers. Introducing GIM Suite 4.1 for smarter, streamlined geoscientific data 2019-11-06T08:26:36Z introducing-gim-suite-4-1-for-smarter-streamlined-geoscientific-data GIM Suite 4.1 introduces a new mobile app, called acQuire Arena, designed to streamline field data capture. The software release adds mobile to the powerful desktop and web capabilities already contained in acQuire’s geoscientific information management solution. The app makes it easy for field workers, geologists and exploration professionals to capture samples and field observations on simple, user-friendly forms and instantly validate their data at the point of capture. Available for both Apple and Android smartphones, it makes GIM Suite’s data capture capabilities smarter and more streamlined. The acQuire Arena app is purpose-built for GIM Suite, with full integration to ensure users are rapidly and efficiently capturing quality data from the field back into the central database. “Data can be synchronised from the field to the GIM Suite database with the tap of a finger and this ensures all your teams are working from a single source of truth,” explains Alison Atkins, CEO of acQuire. “Making smarter decisions in shorter time frames is key to the mining industry and we want to ensure our customers can update, access and use their data, wherever they are, as seamlessly as possible.”  The mobile app can be used in areas of minimal connectivity, with validation rules applied at the point of capture, so teams are capturing and managing their data correctly from the start. This ensures acQuire’s customers retain high confidence in their data being synchronised from the field. The modern, UX designed mobile interface with simple, user-friendly forms makes it a breeze for field teams to start capturing data on the app with little to no training. Alison Atkins shares, “We’ve even taken advantage of in-built smartphone technologies for barcode scanning and location tracking. “We hope this lightens the load for field workers and also reduces costs involved with maintaining multiple field devices.” The GIM Suite 4.1 release is a significant milestone on acQuire’s technology roadmap. With the addition of mobile to GIM Suite, customers will start to benefit more and more from functionality being added to the web and mobile applications in the future. Alison Atkins says, “GIM Suite 4.1 builds on our commitment to provide market-leading software to the mining industry. “We recommend customers download the mobile app and upgrade to GIM Suite 4.1 as soon as possible to maximise their benefits from the latest technology.” acQuire provides geoscience data management software and services for the global mining industry with five offices worldwide and customer support centres operating in each major time zone. The program is designed to develop essential personal development skills in students - across a wide range of areas and is the Singaporean equivalent to the British Duke of Edinburgh scheme as practiced in Australia and the United Kingdom. Actura Singapore is delighted to be able make the official announcement – as this further signifies the key role that the STEAM education-based company plays in developing essential skills and capabilities in youth – specifically STEAM related skills. As its out-of-class solution, offering Space School Expeditions to students, through the California Association for STEAM Education (CASE) – and its CASE Space School International Study Programs offered for both Junior and Senior students, Actura Singapore can now boast that its programs are also officially recognised by the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA). Students, through completing CASE Space School will be able to have elements of their NYAA fulfilled. The National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Youth Leadership Development Program is an exciting self-development program for young people between the ages of 13 and 30 years old. It is a holistic, balanced and non-competitive program of voluntary leisure time activities designed to provide young people with a platform to develop personal qualities and skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and the world. The new NYAA program is designed in line with the Ministry of Education’s Levels of Attainment, focusing on effort and merit of the individual. There are three levels in the NYAA program – bronze level, silver level and gold level. The NYAA program has three key components, which all participants are required to complete: service learning (touching lives, making a difference, outdoor appreciation (to be at ease with nature), healthy living (physical & mental wellness), and community leadership initiative (creating an impact, delivering change). The NYAA has recently undergone a restructure, effective from January 2018 with some enhancements in place. It is fantastic that CASE Space School endorses similar values reflected in the NYAA – that of self-development, personal achievement, adventure and service in the community. This displays the comprehensiveness and rigour the CASE Space School program holds. It also attests to CASE Space School being an all-round program designed to nurture students holistically for their futures. The CASE Space School is underpinned by the Seven Survival Skills, namely, critical thinking and problem solving; collaboration across networks and leading by influence, agility and adaptability, initiative and entrepreneurialism, effective oral and written communication, accessing and analysing information and curiosity and imagination. At CASE Space School students engage in a number of immersive, experiential learning and space-related projects with each catered program designed to develop the student’s capacity to problem solve and collaborate using STEAM learning skills in a practical environment uniquely tailored to their needs based on their age and stage of learning. LEAPS 2.0 is a framework to recognise secondary school students’ holistic development. The NYAA supports the framework of LEAPS. Under LEAPS, students will be recognised with levels of attainment in four domains: Participation, Achievement, Leadership and Service. LEAPS assists students as they are able to earn a bonus point when getting into Junior Colleges, Polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education which are tertiary institutions when they graduate from Secondary School. LEAPS helps to support students in identifying their interests and strengths, setting objectives, encouraging self-directed learning and also managing commitments. LEAPS also emphasizes participation, service, leadership, achievement, representation and accomplishment. “NYAA is beneficial to students as their level of attainment as recognised from NYAA will be converted to a bonus point(s) which can be used for admission to tertiary institutions such as Junior Colleges/ Polytechnics/Institutes of Technical Education. NYAA also provides a foundational platform for students to develop their leadership, personal and knowledge skills”. Aasha Kaur - Program Management Specialist, Actura Singapore A holistic education provides students with a broad and deep foundation for lifelong learning. This includes learning not just in the academic areas. Equally important is the development of values and life skills in each child. This will equip the child to handle the challenges in life later on. The National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and its partnership with Actura promotes a holistic development and education for our youth of today. It fosters key self-improvement and personal development in students and enables them to standout when graduating from High School to Tertiary education. Employers of the 21st century are increasingly emphasising skills that embody key characteristics that are necessary for the future landscape, critical to this are STEAM skills. Actura’s California of STEAM Education (CASE) Space School program is actively seeking to promote these skills through its endorsement of the NYAA through its program and enabling students to fulfil their Bronze and Silver requirements. Established in Australia in 2014, Actura provides the leading STEAM learning solution comprising of in-class to out-of-class solutions. Actura continues to seek to fulfil its mission to become the most trusted STEAM education solution provider.
