However we rarely fail to look at and think about what is perhaps the most important thing we have, and that is our movement quality.   This is something that has slowly come to the forefront of the fitness industry due to the efforts of a few key people but needs a much bigger push into the eyes of the mainstream fitness consumer. One of the biggest progressions made is the growth of the Functional Movement Screen, introduced by Gray Cook as a tool for trainers to use to quantify the quality of their clients movement patterns and give them the tools to create positive change. The increase of popularity of fitness personalities like Ido Portal and their movement based philosophies have led to more awareness and development of movement quality.   While investigation of these systems and philosophies can be worthwhile it can be time consuming and hard to find a good starting point. What we will provide for you here are 5 tips you can implement immediately to improve the quality of your movement.  1. Breathing   Breathing is the fundamental quality of any movement practice. The ancient martial arts and yoga have always integrated breathing into their practice and this is something that modern movement and exercise have neglected.   A great idea to improve movement quality and breath simultaneously is to limit all your breathing during a moderate training session to nasal breathing only. This will have the following benefits:   - balance the nervous system, leading to a flow state - optimize core function - prevent a stress response from exercise - and much more   This is a particularly great idea for cardio exercise and will improve your cardiovascular fitness immensely. It is not recommended for power exercises like Kettlebell swings or Olympic lifting.  2. Self limiting exercises: Put them in your program   This is another concept introduced by Gray Cook. Basically it involves performing exercises that have built in correcting qualities.   An example of this is jump rope. It is impossible to jump rope with poor alignment and form, it builds quality of movement as part of successful execution.   Here are some self limiting exercises you should try:   - Barefoot running - Rock climbing - Battling ropes - Most single leg exercises - Kettlebell presses done bottoms up - gripping the handle bell upsides down   These are a great start to your self limiting exercises. Try them out.    3. Think of training as practice, not working out   This is a huge paradigm shift for most people. Most people go to the gym trying to destroy themselves and sweat as much as possible. This may be fun but it is certainly not productive.   A good idea is to use one day at the gym to practice a particular lift. A good idea is to practice the dead lift. Spend one training session working on form and perfect execution of a lift. As a bonus sided effect of this practice session is that you will get smoked as a side effect.  4. Stop each set before failure   Many people take each set to total failure. This will lead to suboptimal movement quality. It is a good idea to stop the set with one or two reps left in the tank. This will ensure every set looks good.   Another benefit is that it will lead to optimal muscle fiber recruitment. Perfect reps recruit the most muscle fibers needed for the job and as form degrades, range of motion decreases and speed changes you are fatiguing and not recruiting all your muscle fibers. Make sure all reps in a set look the same, from first to last.  5. Try a new sport or activity   Trying new activities can help you improve your movement skills. For example, taking up rock climbing can improve performance in the pull up exercise. Learning dance can help improve movement awareness in leg training exercises.   If you continuously learn new skills and add to your movement vocabulary you will gradually find your movement quality in your training getting better and better.   Try and implement the tips above and watch your quality of movement improve rapidly. Stress can cause: Premature ageing Abdominal fat Alter your blood sugar control Ruin your sleep cycle Massive amounts of inflammation Don’t be a victim to stress – take charge of it Since stress is something we all have to deal with and isn’t going away anytime soon, here are our top 7 tips to help you beat stress and drop fat off your abs.1. Drink green tea Green tea is an absolutely fabulous healthy drink and has 100′s of potential benefits. It can effectively mitigate the inflammation and oxidative stress caused by high levels of stress. One thing to be aware of is that a fairly high amount of green tea needs to be consumed for a therapeutic effect. 3-5 cups a day should do it, or consider a green tea concentrate supplement.2. Consume lots of antioxidants Antioxidants are very important when you are stressed as it will help your body produce glutathione, the primary antioxidant your body needs to deal with stress. You need to ensure you consume them with nearly every meal. Berries, dark green vegetables and spices and herbs are ideal.3. Meditate or take up a mind body practice The benefits of these kinds of practices cannot be overstated. For example, meditation has been found to reduce an inflammatory marker called Il-6, which is a sign of high stress and anxiety. The best activities you can try are meditation, yoga and traditional martial arts. Which one you choose does not matter, it is as long as you enjoy it and do it consistently.4. Take magnesium – lots of it Magnesium is the anti-stress mineral and will help you sleep deeply. It is highly worthwhile to consume at all times, but particularly when stressed. Taking it at night time with your evening meal is your best option. Another great option is an Epsom salt bath. This has 2 benefits: it loads your body with magnesium and the bath itself is very relaxing! Adding essential oils like lavender can only improve the experience.5. Consume adequate fats including Omega 3′s All stress hormones that we make are derived from dietary fat. Having a highly stressful lifestyle and a low fat diet is a recipe for disaster as you will not be supplying your body the raw materials to make stress hormones. This will then cause further stress. Make sure you include Omega 3 fatty acids as they can increase the bodies antioxidant capabilities and reduce inflammation. Other good fats include butter, coconut oil, nuts and avocado.6. Consider a nutraceutical Sometimes you need some extra support when dealing with stress. Some of the best nutraceuticals we have found for this purpose are: Phosphatidyl Serine: This is especially effective in reducing the primary hormone of stress, cortisol. There is nothing more frustrating than eating well, exercising diligently and not seeing results on the scale or the tape measure. One factor that needs to be addressed and can make all the difference in your results is inflammation. Inflammation can manifest in the body in numerous ways. Some things that will cause inflammation in the body include: A poor diet that is high in grains and processed foods High levels of stress Trans fats and a lack of Omega 3 fats Lack of physical activity Toxicity and heavy metals Lots, lots more! If inflammation is ignored it can lead to many different problems. When inflammation moves from acute to chronic it will start to cause cell and tissue destruction. This will lead and contribute to the development and progression of all disease processes. As you can see inflammation is a major problem that can definitely affect your fat loss efforts. Here are the 7 steps we recommend you follow to reduce inflammation.1. Optimize your Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio. This is the most important step to follow to sort out inflammation in the body. Omega 3 and omega 6′s are essential fats that we need to consume in the diet. As a general rule omega 6 fatty acids are inflammatory and found in high amounts in the diet. Omega 3′s are anti-inflammatory and are not consumed enough. You can increase your consumption of oily fish like salmon or supplement with fish oil. Make sure you reduce processed foods in your diet to reduce Omega 6 fatty acids.2. Eat berries to reduce inflammation Berries are absolutely packed with antioxidants which reduce inflammation quickly. They will also lower oxidative stress which is a contributor to ageing and heart disease. Consume these foods on a daily basis and rotate between all different types of berries. Remember to try and eat strawberries that are organic as they are one of the foods most heavily sprayed with pesticides.3. Resistance train 3-4 times per week This is a great way to improve body composition and lower oxidative stress which is a contributor to inflammation. It is ideal to follow a muscle building training protocol to get the best results.4. Supplement wisely for inflammation Supplements can be used very effectively to reduce inflammation. The 5 main supplements we recommend are Fish Oil, Vitamin D, Magnesium, Zinc and Curcumin. Curcumin is the nutrient found in the spice Turmeric which could be the most powerful anti inflammatory herb available.5. Go gluten free to lower intestinal inflammation Gluten is the highly inflammatory protein found within wheat and wheat products. It increases inflammation by agitating the intestinal wall of the small intestine. Gluten can be found in many different products so take care to read all food labels. Following a Paleo food template may be a good idea to reduce inflammation.6. Heal the gut A healthy gut leads to a healthy body. If the gut has high levels of inflammation and damage it can totally stop fat loss. The debate about the importance of calories has raged on in the fat loss industry for the last 20 years. Many people claim they are all that matter while other camps claim they are irrelevant. In our opinion they matter, but they are a part of the bigger picture. If you have addressed blood sugar, inflammation, food intolerances, stress and hormonal balance then addressing your unique calorie needs can really help you accelerate your fat loss results. Here is what we tell our clients to do to maximise their results when trying to drop fat by manipulating their calories.1. Ensure you are eating enough calories The most common problem we see when working with clients is that they are not eating ENOUGH calories. If you do not eat enough calories your body will slow down your metabolic rate to maintain balance. If you keep eating too low an amount your body will refuse to burn fat.  2. Work out the amount of calories you need for your goal To lose fat you need to eat the right amount of calories for your goals. Here is a good rule to follow to ensure you eat enough calories to maintain a good metabolic rate and have a weekly calorie deficit. To work out your number take your bodyweight in pounds (kg x22) and multiply this by 12 and 14. This will give you your calorie range. For example, a 60 kg person would have to eat between 1584 and 1848 calories per day to lose fat. Staying in this range consistently will guarantee results.3. Ensure you have a weekly calorie deficit The most important factor when looking at calories for fat loss is ensuring you have a deficit in calories over the course of a week. A deficit of 500-1000 calories per week will lead to great results.4. Every now and then cycle your calorie intake. Every now and then a great way to accelerate progress is to increase your calorie intake rapidly and then return to your baseline level. When you do this, it will stimulate your bodies metabolic system to burn fat faster and when you return to your baseline you can take advantage of the faster metabolic rate. Try not to go crazy when you do this, 1.5 times normal is ideal.5.Track your calories to ensure consistency To ensure compliance using a simple calorie tracking tool can really help you to identify if you are sticking to what you have to do. Many people find when they do this they quickly learn how far off they really are from what they need. Calories can hep you achieve optimal fat loss if the primary factors we have already discussed have been addressed. Austerity leads to anarchy when people can't afford to pay imposts of high taxes, double dipping on petrol excise with GST and indexed to inflation every six months. Hecs demands of immediate payment, $7 doctor visit fees, Disability job ultimatums, Death wish on persons 65 years +, Debt levy, Parents and high incomes taxed, Plus possible higher excise and taxes on cigarettes, beer and wine, the list goes on.  But you might say they have put a freeze on their salaries from any rises - Well that's after e.g. A backbencher's salary increased $54,000 to $ 195,130.00 and Ian Watt, Secretary to Department of Prime Minister rose a staggering $40,000 to $844,000! Make no mistake these measures will create such high loss of jobs and Canberra runs the risk of becoming a ghost town with loss of 15,OOO jobs and the flow on to hospitality workers, food  distributors and farmers will be enormous. Yesterday I bought some oranges at a supermarket and they taste awful. I used to enjoy an orange with lunch but as many as I have tasted over the past few months none are what might be described as nice. Where do these oranges come from? I loved farm bought oranges but now the local orchard is gone and the trees are dead. I will change this and once more farmers, milk and dairy producers will have a decent income and living.
