Rob O’Mahony, Co-Director and Senior Physiotherapist at Kinima Physio, knows that there are also some types of injuries that typically increase at Christmas and the practice offers science-based therapies to mitigate pain, rehabilitate, and restore functionality. Kinima Physio provides expert advice and individualized treatment plans for sports injuries, spinal conditions, and to mitigate the potential for injuries in the future. Post-surgical and orthopaedic management, Pilates, dry needling, and running assessments are available to improve functionality and movement. Digital home exercise programs and monitored rehabilitation exercise offer additional convenience for individuals. The stretching and reaching involved in decorating can result in strains, sprains, and overtaxed muscles. Falls from ladders also contribute to a significant number of serious fractures to misalignments that can create chronic pain and disability. Physio Perth City can treat those injuries, along with low back and neck pain through exercise therapies, dry needling, and mobilisation and manipulation. Imbibing of alcoholic beverages typically increases during the holidays and drinking can result in a loss of equilibrium and slower reaction times. Physio West Leederville heals and rehabilitates injuries resulting from trip, slip, and fall accidents encompassing damage to bones, muscles, ligaments, joints, and tendons. Even the gifts given to loved ones can result in minor or catastrophic injuries. Serious injuries can result from something as simple as stepping on a child’s building block to trying out a skateboard and physio Perth treats injuries to children and adults. The practice’s professionals regularly manage and treat injuries that includes dislocations and stress fractures, along with providing pre- and post-operative rehabilitation. Kinima Physio understands that the holidays are a time for celebration and wants individuals to do so safely. If an injury does occur, the practice provides a comprehensive range of treatments, therapies, assessments, and monitoring. A custom treatment plan is created for each individual to ease pain, restore functionality, and safety evaluations can aid in preventing hospital readmissions. Seven tips to improve lung functionality as we age | New Australian white paper highlights respiratory health concerns 2020-11-18T23:13:38Z lung-health-and-attitudes-to-wellness-an-australian-perspective Maintaining respiratory health, especially as we age, is becoming a high priority for many Australians.1 This time last year, Australians were bracing themselves for the onslaught of unprecedented bushfire events, which was quickly followed by a global pandemic. These events had direct impacts on the respiratory systems of many Australians. As a means to being better prepared for inevitable smoke-filled days, the simple art of breathing has become a focus, with Google reporting health-related searches for “breathing exercises” steadily increasing over the past year. A new white paper from Finnish wellness company WellO2 has taken a qualitative look at how Australians, especially those predisposed to common respiratory issues such as asthma and persistent cough have been considering ways to improve their lung health at home. Lung health and attitudes to wellness: An Australian perspective1, surveyed 55 Australians, noting their concerns, views and behaviours over 12 months from August 2019.  The report revealed that participants during this period were affected by several factors – including air pollution caused by bushfire smoke, pandemic-associated lockdowns with limited access to physical activities, chronic and seasonal respiratory conditions and a general sense of being less “well”.   Almost 70% of trial participants were more concerned about their overall respiratory health, with a similar number believing their overall fitness and wellness had declined. “Prior to events such as catastrophic bushfires and COVID-19, people often didn’t appreciate the important role our lungs play in keeping us healthy. People maybe took for granted their ability to simply breathe,” said Dr Anssi Sovijärvi, Department of Clinical Physiology, Helsinki University, Finland. One of the clinical researchers behind the adoption of the international Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI)2, Dr Sovijärvi has interests in asthma and allergic rhinitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and environmental pollutants. He has published over 200 scientific papers focusing on the pathophysiology of declined lung function and respiratory symptoms.   “Once pollution particles, like the PM 2.5 particles (often found in smoke from active and smouldering fires), enter the lungs they cause irritation in the airways. This can have a real impact on respiratory health and can lead to an increase in the use of asthma or cough medications, hospital admission and more serious health concerns,3” Dr Sovijärvi explains. Lung fitness changes with age “Lung fitness is something that changes with age. In adults, as they age, the breathing capacity of lungs is declining and the power of respiratory muscles is decreasing,” he said.  “Recovery from severe lung inflammations like COVID-19 will probably be better if the performance of your respiratory muscles is good,”  believes Dr Sovijärvi, referencing a recent article published in the American Journal of Medicine that looked specifically at respiratory muscle performance and its role in recovery from severe lung infections4.   This clinical paper noted that patients exhibiting the most profound baseline respiratory muscle weakness tended to receive the greatest benefit from Respiratory Muscle Training.4 Respiratory Muscle Training – or RMT – is a trusted pressure-based physiotherapy technique that has been shown to improve lung function.  Dr Sovijärvi is also encouraged by the growing clinical interest in using steam to help loosen phlegm from bronchi and help “cough up” trapped irritants, with a new study in Finland looking at an RMT/steam combination in conditions such as asthma and COPD.5,6 Dr Sovijärvi recommends that Australians, especially those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis, or dyspnoea (or breathlessness) for any reason look to undertake regular breathing exercises to help strengthen their lungs.  Dr Sovijärvi’s Top 7 Tips According to Dr Sovijärvi, seven simple things can be done to improve lung functionality as we age: 1.     Regular use of vaporised steam - “spring clean” the surface of the airways   2.     Breathing resistance exercises - breathing in and out against pressure to increase the power of respiratory muscles 3.     Regular sauna visits - inhaling warm and humidified air 4.     Good general hygiene to limit your exposure to respiratory viruses 5.     Maintaining general fitness and a healthy weight – walking is a great aerobic exercise and helps keep a healthy waist circumference, as obesity can be very harmful to lung function 6.     Regular wellness activities – such as Yoga, Pilates and dedicated Breathing classes 7.     Singing – a fun way to exercise your lungs (but while maintaining social distancing of course) Finnish Innovation combines traditional steam and gentle pressure in a modern home-wellness device “Steam has been used to loosen tight phlegm from the airways for years, and while not every Australian has the easy access to saunas as we do in Finland, there are now cost-effective ways to bring the traditional benefits of Nordic steam into your home,” said Dr Sovijärvi. “I have seen how the WellO2, a Finnish innovation that combines traditional steam with gentle pressure, can deliver an easy form of home-based Respiratory Muscle Training.”  While the WellO2 is a wellness rather than a medical product, recent product trials by a group of Australians are positive, reflecting the results from previous European reviews.  Kwang Wee-Oon, from South Yarra in Melbourne, is one of the first Australians to trial the innovative wellness product.  A self-employed Product Manager working in the construction and financial services industries, Kwang had continued to work from home during lockdown, and found the recommended twice-a day exercise schedule easy to fit into his day. Starting with a series of steady inhalation and exhalation exercises morning and night, for around 10 minutes each time, Kwang has gradually increased his routine to around 20-30 minutes daily. “I feel energized after using my WellO2,” he said, admitting that as a direct result of feeling better he has started walking more. I am enjoying walking again. I live opposite the Botanical Gardens, but usually avoid walking there in spring,” said Kwang, explaining how the pollen irritated his lungs. “Since I have been using the WellO2, I have even started walking in the Gardens again - it has been so much easier to cope with the pollen.”  Dr Sovijärvi is pleased to hear of Kwang’s new found love of walking, and believes it is most likely a result of the increase in the strength of his respiratory muscles and improved pulmonary gas exchange.  “Regular use of these breathing tools can help decrease wheezing for asthmatics like Kwang, allow the diaphragm muscles to work more effectively and improve exercise capacity.  With Summer fast approaching down under, I recommend that Australians, especially those with breathing issues living in bushfire affected regions, look to start a breathing exercise routine now so that effects can be seen before the start of the new year.   To download the White Paper, and to discover how to breathe better with the WellO2, visit www.WellO2.com.au  Everyday Australian reviews of the WellO2 can be found here.   REFERENCES 1.   Lung Health and Attitudes to Wellness – an Australian perspective.  November 2020 (A Survey of 55 Australians, prior to embarking on a 6 week trial of WellO2.) available at www.wellO2.com.au  2.  The Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) has collected respiratory function outcomes from researchers and health care professionals from around the world. Justine Wilson’s 2020 Christmas styling tips and trends 2020-11-04T03:28:03Z justine-wilsons-2020-christmas-styling-tips-and-trends Seven weeks to go until Christmas! With many households putting up the tree early this year, Justine Wilson Founder of Vault Interiors Property Styling shares her trends and expert tips to get the house ready for the festive season. According to Justine, there are three key trends we should expect to see throughout homes across the country including, a cooler toned Christmas, a twist on the classic elegant palette and a return to a more rustic, cabin, farmhouse style of decorating. “Like many others, I have already set up and styled my home for the festive season. With the year we’ve all had its time to bring some joy and fun back into our lives and let’s be honest, it takes a bit of effort to put up the decorations, so why not enjoy them for longer!” said Justine. Justine believes that duck egg blue, mint and navy will be the big accent colours this year. Think cooler-toned hues paired with white snowy, frosty flocked trees, garlands and wreaths with the main metallic colours for this scheme being silvers and whites. Justine says, “This is a more glam approach to Christmas styling, so I see things like white feather boa’s in place of standard tinsel and finishing materials like sequins and pearls and glitter being prominent on the ornaments.” She predicts that burgundy plum and magenta will also be popular tones for decorating, a twist on the traditional bright cherry red usually seen in Christmas accessories. “This look is a nod to a more classic palette and will be very elegant. I see this being paired with dark green or real trees, lots of gold accents with serving ware and ornaments also. Plus, you can still bring in glittery elements like gold deer statues, brass candlesticks and mercury glass décor to create a cohesive look,” said Justine. When it comes to the style of decorating, expect to see a return to a more rustic, cabin, farmhouse style. Justine explains, “Think of big leafy garlands in evergreen tones, realism in the greenery mixed with twigs, grapevine and pine cones. This look will be very paired back and simplistic, think a green pre-lit tree without many ornaments or very sparse ornaments, lots of runs of green woodland style garland on tablescape and lots of candles. Almost a turn of the 20th-century approach to decorating!” Justine’s top 3 stylist tips for making the most of your decorations: 1. Ensure you “fluff “out your tree if it's an artificial one: This means fluff out the individual branches when you set up your tree. They get squashed and crushed when in the box or being stored so it’s imperative to get it feeling full again. It’s a tedious process but makes your tree feel more realistic and will hide any empty gaps. My suggestion – wear gloves it can be scratchy! 2. Place inexpensive baubles deep into the tree: We often forget to style the back that you don’t see, or the inside of the tree so remember to do so. Lumping all the ornaments on the outer branches will make the tree feel bare and unbalanced – so if you want a full looking tree, place levels of ornaments within the tree. This will create visual depth and interest if there are many layers. 3. Add extra sparkle: There are many wonderful prelit trees if you choose an artificial tree, but sometimes they don’t have the sparkle/ twinkle function, just flat LED lights. I recommended adding a pack of battery operated twinkle lights in addition to your normal lighting, this gives the tree added dimension, movement and the twinkling feature reflects light around the tree, bringing the ornaments to life, and creating a more magical appearance overall. The former Horticulturist of the Year has this year been recognised for inspiring research and development of recycled materials being used in greenwalls. Mark Paul says, “It is wonderful to receive recognition of the ongoing research and development we are doing to make our greening solutions, particularly our EcoPillow’s, even more sustainable on our journey to reclaim the built environment. “We’ve been using broken down PET bottles for years, but more recently have found ways to incorporate polystyrene and ground coffee waste into our soilless media. We have proven our media, which is lightweight inorganic media, stands the test of time, and does not breakdown – this is evident in some of our oldest greenwalls, which are over 30 years old, and still going strong. Our media is 400kg per cubic metre, which makes it suitable for all of our products, from greenroofs to eco gabions and greenwalls,” said Mark. The many benefits of greening spaces with Mark Paul’s soilless designs include: EcoPillow’s are lightweight and when wetted out are 60kg/sqm Can be installed indoors or outdoors without limitations of dimensions and luminosity Countless creative possibilities: no two installations look the same. Guaranteed aesthetic impact! Biodiversity Thermal isolation of any surface, resulting in great energy savings Absorption of pollutants and noise, greatly improving acoustics Increase of relative humidity and air oxygenation Can be moved to a new location Carbon is withdrawn from the atmosphere, reducing the greenhouse effect Made from reused and recycled materials Low maintenance, only requires quarterly maintenance Has a dedicated irrigation system Doesn’t require large structural support to house them Thanks to the new advancements in the EcoPillow design, Mark and his team have recently been able to create large scale planters, minus the pot or planter box as well as a unique new way to grow a cactus garden, also minus the pots. Recent projects include a variety of home greenroofs from across metropolitan Sydney and Melbourne. Michael Casey, President of the AIH said, “On behalf of the Australian Institute of Horticulture, we congratulate you on the wonderful work that you do in supporting and raising awareness of the importance of horticulture in today’s world. Your pioneering work in Green Wall technology was awarded with you receiving the AIH Horticulturist of the Year in 2012. Your current research and development of recycled materials in Green Walls is inspiring and for this alone the AIH and the industry congratulate you for your work.” About The Greenwall Company: The Greenwall Company is the premier producer of modular and custom designed greenwalls in Australia. They pride themselves on the fact that their walls and roof gabions are built from 94 percent of recyclable materials that would otherwise be destined for Australian landfill. Tested, designed, re-designed, and mastered to ensure they will last the lifetime of the building on which they are installed, further reducing waste. The Greenwall Company have now installed their greenwall systems in over 200 projects and will continue to work towards the goal of reclaiming the built environment. www.greenwall.com.au Kinima Physio Treats Spinal Pain Causing Dysfunction Throughout the Body 2020-10-28T07:47:51Z kinima-physio-treats-spinal-pain-causing-dysfunction-throughout-the-body-1 It’s natural to assume that the source of pain actually stems from that location, but that’s not always true. Neck pain and even persistent migraines can originate in the spine. Rob O’Mahoney, co-director and senior physiotherapist at Kinima Physio, is adept at locating the origins of pain and providing science-based therapies designed to relieve pain and dysfunction resulting from the underlying problem. Kinima Physio has an extensive array of treatment options and therapeutic techniques for healing injuries, addressing chronic conditions, and restoring movement. The practice treats sports-related injuries, provides orthopaedic rehabilitation, and running assessments. Clinical Pilates and custom exercise programs can be prescribed, along with dry needling and injury prevention programs for adolescents to seniors. Physio Perth City is focused on identifying and treating the underlying source of pain, disability, and mobility issues. The spine enables the body to support an upright position and is responsible for carrying the weight of the upper body. It distributes the body’s weight evenly over the pelvis to maintain balance, allowing people to move, twist, and bend. Even a seemingly small misalignment in the spine is capable of creating pain in other parts of the body, mobility problems, and even respiratory issues. The situation only worsens over time if not treated. Physio West Leederville provides a comprehensive range of therapies to realign the spine, improve posture, and enable muscles and the neural system to function properly. Spinal misalignments cause pain and to compensate, people often develop patterns of movement that exacerbates the underlying problem. Even sleep behaviors can contribute to overall spinal problems. The practice employs methods that can encompass physical manipulation, dry needling, and exercise rehabilitation. Physio Leederville can also assist with ergonomic solutions and advice on proper sleep support. Pain in many parts of the body is a result of a spinal misalignment and one of the most frequently experienced conditions. Kinima Physio has the experience, expertise, and science-based solutions to address those issues. The practice also offers secure, convenient, and safe online consultations and supervised exercise plans via telehealth visits. With a rapidly growing need to support the mental health of frontline healthcare workers, Liverpool Hospital has launched a creative and artistic initiative to tackle the challenge. Titled 'The Healing Hospital Arts Project – Creating Wellbeing Environments,' the Hospital has filled the walls of the Mental Health Unit and the nearby Children’s Ward with curated local art that changes every three months. In short, the Hospital has become a dynamic gallery. The project just experienced its first rotation, with the Spring 2020 Collection now on display featuring a total of 33 artworks from 6 local artists, covering themes of community, imagination, and spring warmth. “By bringing the visual arts into the Hospital, it has created an extraordinary environment and has transformed the experience of countless patients, visitors and staff,” said Dallas Rae, Allied Health Director, Mental Health. Miriam Cabello, Resident Health and Arts Consultant and lead of the Project, is responsible for introducing the curatorial and educational model that connects art with health. "Based on the success of the program to date, our vision is now to transform all Hospitals in the South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) into similar 'Wellbeing Environments',” Ms Cabello said. “Our aim is to be a leader in providing innovative art and healing programs that address mental health and wellbeing." And there’s scientific evidence to back this up. The World Health Organisation recently concluded that art plays a major role in improving health and wellbeing, with some studies showing that art-enriched environments can reduce stress by 15%. Furthermore, places that exhibit art encourages self-reflection and group communication, all of which facilitate the therapeutic and healing process. "The Healing Hospital Arts Project has really brightened up the community waiting room and corridors. Everybody loves it, and I often hear conversations amongst staff and consumers about which are their favourites," said Dr Claire Jones, Director, Mental Health. “These initiatives make a genuine impact and renews our focus on wellbeing, while also supporting local artists and the local community.” For artists, this opportunity has been equally rewarding. Reena Naidu, an artist on display during the Winter 2020 exhibition, had this to say: “Having gone through hard times in my own life I know what it is like to experience the stress, sadness and trauma that comes through life’s challenges and knowing that I can contribute to someone’s happiness and uplift them.” The program is sponsored by Australian arts social enterprise ColourSpace Gallery, that have spent the past couple of years transforming the offices of the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Victorian Governor Solicitor’s Office, and various corporate spaces into galleries. In doing so, they have contributed over $50k to local emerging artists. All artworks are displayed for sale, with 75% of all sales going directly back to artists. “Regularly changing artwork is a simple way of constantly creating fresh, dynamic spaces for people to be in,” says Scott Ko, Founder of ColourSpace Gallery. “These changes can continuously trigger a sense of relief and escapism, that improves mental health for staff and patients alike.” ---------------------------------------- For interviews with Miriam Cabello or Scott Ko, or for a suite of higher res images, please contact Scott on 0433 403 044 or scott@cs.gallery
