Phase Zero Consultancy Services is leading the safety management efforts at the event and have selected carbonTRACK technology to track the boats and provide regular updates on their location. This is the second time the risk management organisation is working with carbonTRACK to digitise what is one of the longest paddle races in the world. Phase Zero also used carbonTRACK technology at the 2017 event. Prior to carbonTRACK’s involvement, the participants were manually marked when passing each of the checkpoints. Phase Zero recognised that technology could transform this process and selected carbonTRACK to help them overcome the event’s challenges - a 404km course (much of it under thick vegetation and poor cellular coverage) and the need for water-resistant tracking devices with enough power to last 5 days.  To meet this challenge, carbonTRACK has created a bespoke communication network that leverages the LoRaWAN protocol and its own patented Minimal Data Transfer (MDT) protocol over the existing cellular network (where available). This is the first step to more efficient electricity supply. This data helps to minimise the need for peaker plant infrastructure. “Peaker plants” are power plants that are fired up to supply electricity to the grid during peak demand events, such as extremely hot days during summer. Peaker-plant infrastructure accounts for 30% of electricity infrastructure assets, despite this infrastructure being used less than 10 days per year. They are incredibly inefficient, and could be blamed for the recent South Australia blackout and threatened NSW blackout. The second step is managing electricity demand by controlling non-essential household devices. This ‘behind the meter’ control of consumption gives suppliers the ability to react instantaneously when supply exceeds predictions by turning off non-essential loads such as hot water systems and pool pumps, and requesting that energy stored in batteries or self-generating enters the grid. This control has the potential to eliminate the need for peaker plants entirely and, in doing so, removing billions in electricity infrastructure costs each year. carbonTRACK’s Smart Meter also helps to make better and smarter use of PV solar. Current grid architecture doesn’t adequately support end-point generation, and a lopsided adoption of solar causes grid instability issues. This is why in Southern Queensland, where residential rates of solar are in excess of 30%, two-thirds of generated solar power is at times blocked from entering the grid. carbonTRACK’s Smart Meter uses predictive analysis of available solar energy using weather forecasts, and other mechanisms to assist suppliers in managing grid stability. It ensures that as much as possible solar energy is consumed where it is produced. For its entire existence, the electricity sector has been forced to tolerate efficiency losses of up to fifty percent in the transport and use of power. The cost, both financial and environmental, is much higher than they would be if demand and supply could interact and renewable energy sources could be effectively and completely integrated into the existing grid.
