The PRWIRE Press Releases https:// 2002-10-24T21:00:00Z WRQ Bridges Legacy-Web Skills Gap, Extends Host Applications to New Users 2002-10-24T21:00:00Z wrq-bridges-legacy-web-skills-gap-extends-host-applications-to-new-users SYDNEY, October 24, 2002 WRQ announced the release of WRQ Verastream Host Integrator 5.0, with the goal of bridging the costly skills gap that has limited the extension of critical host applications to new business users. New Verastream enhancements are designed to help IT departments integrate host-based legacy systems with Web applications, by adapting and reusing data and business logic. Companies have recognized that simply reformatting legacy screens to look like Web applications is not enough to extend full legacy functionality to a wide variety of business users. Original cryptic codes and convoluted business functions are confusing when the legacy application is extended to a new set of business users, eliminating any value in the technology investment. The growing IT skills gap between integration and Web developers underscores the important role WRQs component-based integration methodology plays in incorporating legacy systems across the enterprise. Integration developers typically focus on extracting information from the legacy system, while Web developers emphasize the presentation and functionality of the final Web page or application. New Web Builder features bridge the divide, by offering a user-friendly environment to automate each stage of the development process as legacy functionality is extended to Web applications. Verastream provides a single platform that takes customers through each stage of the legacy integration process. Legacy integration projects typically move along a continuum, from basic Web enablement to more advanced projects, such as composite applications, said Dale Vecchio, research director at Gartner. As user and application needs become more sophisticated, legacy resources need to be aligned to new business processes. Companies will eventually move beyond presentation improvements to a more component-like approach to legacy integration. At the touch of a button, integration developers now can generate Web pages and applications automatically with Verastream. Deployed as is or reformatted with any standard Web design tool, the resulting Web pages can simply change the look of a legacy screen or represent complete host functions from multiple screens. Web Builder applications also can be used to test legacy components before they are passed on to Web developers for incorporation into new applications. For more sophisticated development needs, Verastream automatically generates Java beans from the legacy components. Developers then use standard Java IDEs (integrated development environments) to build more complex Web applications. With the new Verastream Web Builder, customers can get started quickly with three layers of abstraction and expand legacy-Web integration projects in incremental phases. First, host screens can simply be made available via the Web; a change typically required by users who are familiar with business process. In the second level, legacy functionality is presented in a more intuitive way; the look and feel is similar to that of a Web page. Finally when fuller integration is required, standard components that encapsulate host functions are used as building blocks for more complex applications. Enhancements to this new version of Verastream include the following: Design Tool Host screens can be automatically converted to Web pages and presented as is. Legacy functionality can be abstracted to make the Web application more intuitive. The ability to mix and match these features gives developers the tools to create Web applications that are the most appropriate for each audience, in the least amount of time. Component Generator Java beans are created around the legacy components. Web services are generated automatically from legacy components. The component interfaces can be accessed from the IDE of the developers choice. Web Application Generator Web applications are automatically created from the componentized legacy application, and functionality spans multiple screens. Resulting applications can be edited by any JSP-compatible design tool. The legacy developer can use the auto-generated Web pages to test each component before it is passed to the Web development team. Previously, teams would either work with untested components or spend time developing testing applications. Currently available worldwide, Verastream Host Integrator is designed specifically for screen-based legacy applications. Using the components generated with Verastream, users can build Web applications that integrate information from a broad range of host types, including IBM OS/390, IBM AS/400, UNIX, HP e3000 and OpenVMS. WRQ has also announced the worldwide availability of Reflection 10.0. A growing concern in IT today is reducing the cost of owning and operating enterprise desktops that connect over the network to key data and applications residing on host systems. One of the challenges for vendors has been to determine what can be improved technologically to deliver greater savings to management while continuing to provide increased capabilities and flexibility to IT. Another challenge has been to prove the overall economic benefits of standardizing the desktop on a single host access solution, evidence of which has not been available until today. We have had anecdotal evidence for many years that WRQ adds value to IT administrators in enterprise host system environments when it comes to reducing management and support costs, said Randy Robinson, vice president, Reflection Business Unit at WRQ. But proving the merits of consolidating on Reflection has been difficult, until now. WRQs latest enhancements to its host access product line, combined with data results from Giga Information Groups Total Economic Impact Study with WRQ, demonstrate that there are real ways to address these challenges. Gigas study, The Total Economic Impact (TEI) of Standardizing on WRQs Reflection for Windows, incorporates independent Giga research and data gathered from current U.S.-based WRQ customers in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, financial services and online software services. The report is available via download at www.wrq.com/info/gigatei. Key statements and findings in the report include: In our research, Giga discovered that implementing WRQ Reflection emulation solutions was a relatively low-risk endeavor due in part to WRQs longevity in the industry and their financial strength. Overall, standardizing the desktop on a single host access solution can save the typical 7,000-seat enterprise up to $1,028,704 over three years in acquisition and IT support costs. While initial deployment costs are fairly high, customers should see a positive return on investment (ROI) well within two years. Reflection has the potential to provide good ROI: up to 24 percent, unadjusted, and 18 percent, risk adjusted, and a payback period within 20-22 months. -more- --2 Reflection users may see significant benefits and savings in three major categories: Reduced IT support and help desk costs, with the potential for large organizations to save 2.1 full time equivalents (FTE) in headcount or $178,500 annually, and up to 75 percent reduction in emulation-related help desk calls when shifting from multiple emulation packages to Reflection. Efficiencies and savings in dealing with one emulation vendor, with potential savings of $11,500 annually in contract review/negotiation and administrative costs. Improved IT support productivity by taking advantage of Reflection central management and automation tools, with the potential for large organizations to save the efforts of 1.1 IT FTE or a savings of $93,500 annually, as well as reduced report generation time, e.g., from hours to minutes. Todd OBert, president of Productive Online, stated: Over the past year and a half, weve seen the enterprise focus on creating operational efficiencies to reduce costs and clearly some have followed through by consolidating multiple emulation packages into a single solution. As a committed market leader, WRQ Reflection has been an obvious choice for customers looking to standardize. The implementation of WRQs Reflection for the Web product in our enterprise has enabled us to retire nine different terminal emulation packages and consolidate into one Web-based emulation for all our host systems, said Valerie Parker, principal IT specialist at Air Products. This has greatly reduced our complexity and overall support cost for the company. Having a Web-based emulation package keeps our client PCs thinner by not having the software loaded on all PCs. This makes software upgrades go much more smoothly since only the server side has to be upgraded. WRQ knows the host environment and where it is going, enabling companies to make the most out of their big iron investments and helping them adapt to new technologies such as the Web, new operating systems and programming techniques, said Jim Bobbitt, COO, Broughton International. WRQ integration solution enables workflow at UFJ Finance Australia Limited 2002-07-05T21:00:00Z wrq-integration-solution-enables-workflow-at-ufj-finance-australia-limited UFJ Australia Finance Limited (UFJ Finance) is one of the leading specialist equipment financiers in Australia. For a wide range of small and medium-sized business in the industrial, government, commercial, rural and professional sectors, Lease and Hire Purchase financing continue to be an attractive alternative form of funding the acquisition of income-producing items such as plant, equipment and vehicles. Equipment that UFJ Finance finances includes computers and software leasing, hi-tech medical equipment, cars, transportation equipment, agricultural equipment etc. UFJ Finance is a subsidiary of the UFJ Bank of Japan, one of the leading banks of the world. UFJ Business Reform In 2001 UFJ Finance began a process of business reform. The goal of the business reform was to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of UFJ Finance business processes to provide greater profitability and customer satisfaction, through the improved handling of all transactions. Planning for this reform required UFJ Finance to focus on the technologies that underpinned these business processes. Workflow was chosen by UFJ Finance as the strategic enabling technology for business reform. The implementation of workflow mandated integration with the company's mission-critical InfoLease application. The InfoLease architecture required an innovative approach to integration legacy extension middleware would be required. WRQ's Verastream Host Integrator provided the key. UFJ Finance determined that while InfoLease continued to provide a functionally rich core business application, to gain the planned improvements to their business efficiency and effectiveness, adoption of new technologies would be required. UFJ Finance understood that new technologies employed would need to: Provide the flexibility to take advantage of future enhancements to InfoLease, and Aid the adoption of emerging technologies that would enhance UFJ Finances business, such as the introduction of web-delivered services to customers. In search for a host integration solution At the beginning of 2001, UFJ Finance chose K-Flow from Power Plus Pty. Ltd, a workflow system that electronically automates, tracks and audits business-critical work processes across an enterprise. Chris Nilon, General manager of Information Technology at UFJ Finance: "While we were evaluating a workflow package we were faced with the problem of how to integrate InfoLease. International Decision Systems had some modules available but these did not support all of the functionality that we required. We realized that we had to search for an alternative solution to integrate our legacy host applications with K-Flow." The evaluation commenced with an Internet search of vendors claiming to provide UI extension / host integration applications. UFJ Finance evaluated the offerings from eight vendors. The challenge for UFJ Finance was that many vendors did not support the integration of legacy applications on the UNIX platform. The integration of UNIX applications is less likely to be supported than the integration of IBM Mainframe and/or IBM AS/400 applications that use block mode emulation. As a result many of the host integration vendors that UFJ Finance identified, only supported the 'easy' block mode integration rather than the more difficult to integrate UNIX character based applications. Chris Nilon: "VT is extremely difficult to do, more difficult than 3270. While some vendors claimed they did VT emulation, the reality was that many offered 3270 or 5250 solutions only. WRQ was very responsive and offered a Proof-of-Concept (POC), which we accepted. The POC was carried out on our site using their Verastream Host Integrator (VHI) legacy adapter with our system. The successful demonstration of VT emulation proved to us that the technology was viable. We saw that not only did VHI have the capability to integrate our VT application; WRQ demonstrated their ability to support our specific needs. We were convinced that VHI was the right solution for us WRQ Verastream Host Integrator WRQ's Verastream Host Integrator is cost-effective software for extracting legacy information and integrating it with other applications like web applications or as in UFJ Finance's case a Workflow application. Verastream Host Integrator offers object-based access (Microsoft COM, Java EJB or CORBA) to business logic and data, and requires no custom programming or re-engineering of legacy host applications. The fact that Verastream Host Integrator is non-invasive to the host, meant that UFJ Finance were able to integrate their InfoLease application without compromising the robustness, security, stability and integrity of UFJ Finance's legacy systems. In addition to the Verastream product WRQ also offered UFJ Finance consultancy help. WRQ's consulting staff worked as a team with UFJ Finance's Application development group and the K-Flow people. Nilon: "This was a true team approach. We were very happy with the commitment to the project and the support received from WRQ. Nilon liked the flexibility and performance of Verastream Host Integrator. "The fact that Verastream offers an attractive architecture by delivering an API that can be Java or COM gives us a lot of flexibility for the future. Verastream Host Integrator simply works. There is no performance overhead with Verastream compared to going directly to the Host. It is a great product with great potential." Solving the business problems With the Workflow solution in place UFJ Finance has streamlined its equipment leasing process, resulting in improved transaction times and more efficient customer service processes. The results according to Nilon: "Thanks to the Workflow implementation in combination with Verastream Host Integrator with InfoLease, we can now handle increased transaction volumes with the same headcount. In addition to this Verastream Host Integrator has improved the customer service process by providing a graphical user interface (GUI) to our InfoLease application. Future plans UFJ Finance is well positioned to explore the use of emerging technologies for their business. Nilon: "We were already able to expand our business using emerging technologies. But with the open architecture in place today, we can focus more on e-Commerce initiatives, something that has been difficult in the past. Furthermore we can expand the access to our workflow application to our trading partners". About WRQ WRQ provides integration software and services for host-intensive environments. WRQ Captures #2 Ranking In Web-To-Host Market According To IDC Report 2002-06-17T21:00:00Z wrq-captures-2-ranking-in-web-to-host-market-according-to-idc-report In the recent IDC Worldwide Host Access Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2006, WRQ, Inc. was named as the number 2 vendor for Web-to-host, according to worldwide revenue market share. WRQ, a 21-year veteran in host integration and access, overtakes competitors and is now second to IBM on this leading Web-to-host provider list. IDCs yearly report for this market sizes and segments the host access software opportunity and forecasts the five-year outlook. Data procurement is conducted via surveys and discussions with vendors. IDC splits the host access market into traditional and Web-to-host segments, and considers how each of these performs across four geographic areas: North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Rest of World. Vendor market share is ranked by shipments for the traditional segment, and by revenue for the Web-to-host segment. The new IDC ranking adds to a growing record of milestones for WRQ in the Web-to-host segment, including significant license growth of WRQ Reflection for the Web in 2001 and the June release of version 5.0, also announced today. By growing its customer base through competitive displacement, WRQ has ascended to second place in terms of market share for Web-to-host in 2001, said Max Flisi, associate analyst for Datacenter Networks at IDC. This achievement is all the more noteworthy at a time when competition is intense and when some vendors exhibited flat or negative growth in this space. WRQ should continue in this vein by focusing on ease of management and security within its products, and by working closely with its existing customer base breeding loyalty with current customers is what will prevent defection to competitors. We are proud of this accomplishment, not only because it validates our success in this segment, but because it motivates us to continue to deliver the best host access solutions for our customers and the enterprise sector overall, said Randy Robinson, vice president and manager of the Reflection Business Unit at WRQ. -more--2- WRQ Products Supported by quality consulting services and technical support, WRQ Reflection and WRQ Verastream transform IT obstacles into opportunities. WRQ's Reflection transforms policing 2002-05-16T21:00:00Z wrq-s-reflection-transforms-policing The Queensland Police has developed and is using WRQ's Reflection emulation product to integrate their 'mug shots' picture database with their core operational policing system, Polaris. This system was developed, in-house using the easy-to-drive scripting features within Reflection. Prior to this system being installed, the police had to first look up suspect details in the Polaris system, copy down identifying information, and then launch the mug shots database separately, and retype this information to perform a search for the image. This was time-consuming and consequently the image was often not looked up by the police. The Polaris system is a text-only system, which does not have the ability to store or display images. With the integration of the web-based mug shots database into Polaris, the police officers simply search for the name of the person in Polaris and hit a button to display the image of the person in a browser window. The integration simplifies the search for suspects, ensures that the correct image is displayed by eliminating typing errors, and means the officers can now run all their queries from one core application - Polaris. "The integration of Polaris with the web-based mug shot system, using our Reflection emulation solution is extremely clever and innovative. In a matter of minutes, the Queensland Police have unlocked their Unix-based Polaris data and integrated it with their graphical, web-based mugs shot system without the need to make any changes to the original Unix system," said Audrey Lyon, General Manager, WRQ Australia. "Queensland Police's creative use of our technology, clearly demonstrates the value that our customers can and do derive from their existing IT investments," she continued. The system has been rolled out to all policing locations in the state. The Police ran a pilot of the system approximately 3 to 4 months ago. Such was the success of the pilot that they decided to roll it out statewide shortly after it had completed. Jeff Tendero, Applications Manager, Queensland Police, "Queensland Police had already been using Reflection for host access, so it was a proven application. I found it straightforward and simple to add a few new features to our existing Unix-based Polaris system, using the Microsoft VBA-based standard scripting facilities of Reflection. "It is certainly unusual to have a text-based system bringing up images. However, it has allowed us to provide a significant extra piece of functionality to the police and simplify the work process, with minimal effort and cost, and has enhanced the value of our existing systems. "The officers and other staff were amazed at the ease with which the system could be used, with little or no training. They realised immediately the savings that had been made as a result of adding new features the existing Polaris system," he said. -Ends- WRQ Products Supported by quality consulting services and technical support, WRQ Reflection and WRQ Verastream turn IT obstacles into opportunities. WRQ Reflection For The Web And WRQ Reflection For IBM Outperform IBM WebSphere Host On-Demand And Personal Communications In Independent Lab Tests 2002-04-16T21:00:00Z wrq-reflection-for-the-web-and-wrq-reflection-for-ibm-outperform-ibm-websphere-host-on-demand-and-personal-communications-in-independent-lab-tests WRQ, Inc. today released independent test lab results showing that WRQ Reflection for the Web 4.5 and WRQ Reflection for IBM 9.0 outperform IBM WebSphere Host On-Demand 6.0 and IBM Personal Communications 5.5 in many areas. The Tolly Group, a strategic consulting and independent benchmarking lab, conducted the evaluation. The Tolly Group tests validate that Reflection is sending a clear signal to enterprise organizations seeking faster host access and, ultimately, increased worker productivity and cost-savings. This is the 10th competitive test commissioned by WRQ, since 1997, which The Tolly Group has performed on Reflection. In all of the tests to date, Reflection has repeatedly outperformed competitive products under test. As enterprise organizations today are challenged to do more with less, they are demanding that vendor solutions provide rapid and cost-effective results, said Kevin Tolly, President & CEO of The Tolly Group. In both the thin-client and thick-client tests, WRQ products beat rival IBM offerings, delivering performance savings that drive much-needed enterprise productivity. Test Focus The Tolly Groups engineers subjected WRQ and IBM products to a series of tests to measure the performance of their respective Web-to-host thin clients and TN3270 thick clients. The tests focused on four areas of performance in typical, everyday terminal emulation functions, specifically: first-connect times for downstream clients to access mainframe data via the Web, TN3270 file-transfer upload/download times, HLLAPI performance via 3270 sessions and screen updates via TN3270. The Tolly Group published a summary of the test results in its April 2nd Tolly Online newsletter; interested parties may view the news item at: http://www.tolly.com/News/NewsDesk/TS202104WRQFeb02.asp. We know from our customers that our Web- and Windows-based solutions perform remarkably well and allow for substantial time-savings and increased productivity, said Randy Robinson, vice president and manager of the Reflection Business Unit at WRQ. Now we have independent proof to share with the marketplace that shows just how far Reflection outperforms rival offerings. The Tolly Group Test Results In testing first connections by Reflection for the Web vs. Host On-Demand, the WRQ product proved faster: Reflection for the Webs first connection times were, on average, four times faster than IBM Host On-Demand. Tests with 640K broadband and 56K dial-up connections revealed even larger gains using Reflection for the Web. Another noteworthy contrast between the two products deals with efficiency: Reflection for the Web does not require the end user to restart the browser to launch a terminal emulation session. IBM Host On-Demand necessitates a two-step process, including a re-launch of the client browser to complete a connection. In Reflection for IBM and IBM Personal Communications comparison testing, including file transfer, HLLAPI and screen updates, WRQ consistently outperformed IBM: Because Reflection for IBM supports a 32K-byte data block size and Personal Communications does not, The Tolly Group engineers tested both products using the next fastest common speed, 16K-byte. In these tests, the WRQ emulator completed the upload in 21% less time and the download in 9.35% less time than the IBM emulator. In testing in the 32K-byte block size configuration, Reflection for IBM managed the download in just 25.21 seconds or 22.4% faster than the IBM product. Test results of HLLAPI performance showed that Reflection for IBM returned a response time for HLLAPI tasks in 0.26 seconds, versus 0.32 for Personal Communications, which equates to a 22% time-savings with the Reflection product. In testing thick-client screen updates, trials demonstrated that Reflection for IBM accomplished screen updates in 41% less time than the IBM offering. In both Web-to-host and TN3270 host access tests, WRQ performed better than IBM.
