Bug in Android Development SDK Triggers MasterKey Detection 2013-07-23T00:39:00Z bug-in-android-development-sdk-triggers-masterkey-detection-1 Sydney, Australia – July 23, 2013 - A week ago, Bitdefender announced an update to the Bitdefender Mobile Security and Bitdefender Antivirus Free to mitigate the MasterKey vulnerability. Since then Bitdefender has started receiving reports about applications that manifest the MasterKey exploit behaviour – overwriting identically-named files inside the archive as they were cleared off digital signature inspection. A closer look into a couple of these applications hosted on Google Play and it’s revealed a potentially harmful common trait: they all had the air. prefix, a marker for applications written in Adobe Air. Bitdefender have looked into their collection of Android applications and based on their telemetry, they have discovered that nearly 1.25 percent of the applications written in Adobe Air manifest the MasterKey behaviour and are blocked on patched Android distributions. How the exploit works? The MasterKey exploit works by including two duplicate files inside the same Android Package File (APK). When the Android device starts the application installation process, the operating system unpacks the APK file and extracts the files inside. However, since there are two identically-named files with the same path, the latter would overwrite the former, thus triggering the suspicious behaviour. The introduction of a duplicate file is not voluntary (as it would be in the case of a malicious attack), but rather the side effect of a bug in the development toolkit used by Android application developers – Adobe Air 3.7.0.153. The issue has been known and published on the Adobe bugtracker since April this year. Who is impacted? Although the icon substitution does not adversely impact device security, these applications will be denied the right to install on customers’ devices if they are running a patched Android version (Cyanogen Mod or the upcoming Android 4.3, among others). I’m a developer, how do I fix this? If you’re building Android applications using this specific version of Air, you should update to a newer version and rebuild your applications. If, for any reason, you are unable to update the development platform, you should simply remove any of the duplicate files by opening the APK file with any utility that can modify ZIP files and navigate to the resdrawable-xhdpi folder and delete one of the icon.png files inside. *** About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Bitdefender advises users to stay away from fake limousine offers and online ‘heart experts’ who claim to heal troubled relationships. This type of scam spreads through spam and redirects users to phishing, fraud and malware-infected websites. As men plan to spend 75 percent more than women for 2013 Valentine’s Day, according to a survey by CreditDonkey.com, scammers lure them with gift ideas. The bait that tricks men these days includes fake chocolate offers, diamond-like rings, perfumes, personalised gifts, heart-shaped jewelry and replica watches. “Scammers have taken a shotgun approach to lovers on Valentine’s, with dating spam counting for almost 7 percent of all spam sent around the globe,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi. “Valentine’s Day brings an increase of romance scams, so people should be careful to avoid fake dating websites, love giveaways and phony social media profiles. These all collect their personal details for impersonation, extortion and money muling.” A fast spreading scam tricks victims to download Valentine’s Day wallpapers which redirect to fraudulent websites. Users are told they won an iPhone 5 and asked for personal details. In the name of Cupid, similar scams circulate on Facebook, too. Valentine’s Day games and Android apps downloaded from unofficial marketplaces such as free love calculators may install adware and malware. In Australia, lovebirds should be wary of online Valentine’s Day cards, especially surprise emails that are labelled from secret admirers. Much like what happens in Germany, through BlackHat SEO techniques, they are redirected to poisoned search results that may install Trojans on their devices. Also they must be careful of opening any attachments that might enable malicious software like spyware or key-loggers to be downloaded to computers, leaving them vulnerable to cyber-criminals. * * *About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Bitdefender Labs discovered the ongoing campaign today and are once again warning users about the dangers of clicking spammy links. The account hijacking begins with a spam message with a short link to an apparently harmless session of the reliable news channel MSNBC (hxxp://www.msnbc.msn.com-im9.net[removed]). A closer look at the real link reveals that the true domain is not part of MSNBC, but a crafty domain composed of subdomains at hxxp://com-im9.net. The domain was registered in Ukraine on Jan 27 and is hosted in a data center in Nicosia, Cyprus. This page contains a piece of malicious JavaScript, disguised as the popular Lightbox library that will perform the attack in stage 2. Before we proceed, let’s see what cookie theft is all about: security on the web is based on what we call the same-origin policy, a complex mechanism that won’t allow Site A to access resources of Site B, such as cookies. Cookies are small snippets of text created when the user logs into a system, and they are used to (among other things) remember that the account holder has already passed the authentication once. Otherwise, the user will have to log in whenever they read another e-mail or when they navigate from one page to another. So, in this context, it is obvious that a piece of code running on Site A can’t steal a cookie set by Site B. However, a subdomain of Site B can access the resources of Site B, and this is what the attackers did. The second stage of the attack is focused on the Yahoo Developers Blog (developers.yahoo.com), which conveniently uses a buggy version of WordPress. More to the point, they exploit the SWF Uploader of the WordPress platform at http://developer.yahoo.com/blogs/ydn/wp-includes/js/swfupload/swfupload.swf. It has a security flaw known as CVE-2012-3414 (by the way, it has been patched since WordPress version 3.3.2). Since it is located on a sub-domain of the yahoo.com website, all the attackers need to do is trigger the bug and pass a command that steals the cookie, and then send it “home”. At this point, miscreants have full access to the victim’s contact list until the current session expires or the user logs out. Crooks will either spam the contacts in the stolen lists (which may include friends, family, business contacts, and professors) or use these contacts to send spam e-mails and/or malware in the name of the crook. Why is your account important for crooks? If you are asking yourselves why crooks take an interest in your e-mail accounts and harvest the e-mail addresses of your friends, the answer is simple. To send more spam. Miscreants cannot register accounts automatically on webmail providers such as Yahoo, Google, Hotmail and the like because registrants need to fill in CAPTCHA. It takes time, and real people, to type the signs in. That, in turn, costs money. Stealing active accounts is a cost-effective way for an operator to automate attacks and, at the same time, allows them to read your contacts and get more victims. What’s to be done?Log out from your e-mail accounts every time you’re done reading or writing your e-mails.Never click on links in spam e-mails.Keep your antivirus and software updated. Bitdefender Wins AV-TEST Best Repair Award 2013-01-31T08:38:00Z bitdefender-wins-av-test-best-repair-award Bitdefender Wins AV-TEST Best Repair Award SYDNEY/AUCKLAND – January 31, 2013 – Awards from both major independent testers propel Bitdefender to another year at the top. Bitdefender, creator of the world’s best antivirus software, won the Best Repair title from German security institute AV-TEST, clinching an award from the second of two major independent testing organizations in the first weeks of 2013. The award, which reflects Bitdefender’s prowess in fighting malware infections already on a victim’s computer, follows the awarding of the Product of the Year title to Bitdefender two weeks ago by the other major analysis firm, AV-Comparatives. The Best Repair 2012 statuette by AV-TEST honors Bitdefender Internet Security’s effectiveness in detecting, repairing and cleaning malware from an infected system. A main factor the security institute examined was the ability to detect hidden rootkits and remove malware that also alters the system. “In some of our most exhaustive testing ever, Bitdefender proved to be the reigning antidote to infection,” said AV-TEST CEO Andreas Marx. “The company has done great things with its repair technologies. When your computer is infected, Bitdefender is the one to go to." In December of last year, Bitdefender also made a stunning debut in AV-TEST trials with its 2013 security suites. Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 won the top place in the German institute’s testing, scoring 17 out of 18 possible points. “Here in the Bitdefender Labs, we’re always looking out to develop daredevil technologies – the potentially disruptive innovations that keep us at the top of our industry,” said Viorel Canja, head of Bitdefender Labs. “This creative approach, and our emphasis on going the extra mile, has served us very well in recent years. So we're always pleased to hear of new awards, especially when they come from one of the most respected testing organizations in the industry.” * * * For further information about Bitdefender, please contactMarie-Claire Suter Howorth Communications(02) 8281 3815Marie-Claire@howorth.com.au Or Rebecca BoothHoworth Communications(02) 8281 3225Rebecca@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Exploitation code is included in the world’s most frequently used exploit packs such as BlackHole, Nuclear Pack and the Cool Exploit Kit, resulting in cyber-criminals taking advantage of the huge pool of vulnerable computers by planting ransomware. Bitdefender has identified multiple campaigns that use the CVE-2013-0422 bug in Java to infect client machines with the notorious IcePol (also known as Reveton). Once the computer is successfully infected, the user is denied access to the desktop until payment of a ransom, which the criminals call a ‘fine’. Most of these attacks are directed from servers in the UK, Canada and the US but this doesn’t mean that Australia is safe. We ranked 14th in terms of countries being affected by the exploit, with 0.87 per cent of the total number of incidents worldwide involving the exploit taking place in Australia. The Reveton ransomware has localised in multiple languages using IP addresses of the infected computers, and victims are spreading across the world. All it takes is a vulnerable version of Java. Bitdefender also offers a free removal tool for computer users who don’t have a Bitdefender product and have already been infected with the IcePol ransomware. The tool is available immediately via the Bitdefender Toolbox. Bitdefender customers have always been protected since the emergence of the threat by multiple layers of defense, from page blocks to signatures on the exploit files. To stay safe, Bitdefender recommends consumers patch their Java distribution immediately to Update 11. Bitdefender also advises that users disable the Java plugin in the browser they are using for web-related tasks and only enable it in an alternative browser to be used for tasks requiring Java. ### For further information about Bitdefender, please contact Danielle Zhu Howorth Communications 02 8437 5342 Danielle@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. As kids spend an increasing amount of time online for play, socialising and learning, Bitdefender has created a tool that allows children and teens to explore and discover while offering parents peace of mind. “Whether we like it or not, children interact daily on the internet with people they don’t even know, are subjected to threats from technologies they don’t understand, and risk their safety – and reputations – through social networking,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi. “We’ve come up with a product to help counter all those risks and give children a smooth start to their online life.” Bitdefender Parental Control takes every action reasonable to protect children – it restricts web access to the hours set by parents, blocks pornography and other content parents deem inappropriate, and it monitors children’s activity on social networks and elsewhere. The tool tracks who tries to contact your kids and tells you who your children interact with. It’ll inform you of who’s been sending SMSs to your child, keep you aware of your child’s location, alert you when your child makes a new friend on Facebook, monitor wall posts and photos, track phone calls, steer your child away from hacker sites, tell you when your child leaves the school ground, blacklist bullies and others in instant messaging, and much more. - Ends - For further information about Bitdefender, please contactAnna Barnes Howorth Communications02 8281 3802 anna@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Bitdefender 2013 takes no. 1 place on debut in AV-TEST Trials 2012-12-06T04:25:00Z bitdefender-2013-takes-no-1-place-on-debut-in-av-test-trials SYDNEY/AUCKLAND– December 6, 2012 – Bitdefender, the innovative provider of antivirus solutions, maintained its solid lead on the rest of the industry as it concluded a highly successful 2012 and debuted its 2013 products in AV-TEST trials. Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 won the top place in independent testing by AV-TEST, the leading security software analysis firm, through September and October. According to results released in November, Bitdefender scored a near perfect 17 out of 18 possible points, beating all other 23 leading antivirus producers in the latest round of testing. "Bitdefender software is a regular feature at the top of our testing here at AV-TEST and we were particularly looking forward to testing the 2013 products," said AV-TEST CEO, Andreas Marx. "We were not disappointed. The experience and dedication of the Bitdefender team shows through in all of its products we test. As always, we look forward to the next round of testing." “This is the AV-TEST round the industry was eagerly awaiting - the first tests of the most popular 2013 products,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Strategist, Catalin Cosoi. “We had a stunningly successful run with the 2012 generation of products that shot us firmly into world leadership spot of the industry. Now, after the first tests based on our 2013 generation of products, it looks like we’re going to advance even more.” With the latest win, Bitdefender products have claimed the top spot in AV-TEST trials eight times, more than any other antivirus provider, and won AV-TEST’s prestigious annual Best Protection 2011 award. Bitdefender in the past year has also repeatedly won in trials by AV Comparatives, another independent testing firm, winning the organisation’s Advanced+Award and its overall Top Rated Award for 2011. Bitdefender has also won top certification from VB 100 and was named Editor’s Choice by both PC Mag and CNET. In the latest round of AV-TEST trials, Bitdefender scored a perfect 6 of 6 in the Protection category, detecting 100 per cent of “widespread and prevalent malware” and offering 100 per cent protection against zero-day malware attacks, according to the AV-TEST results. It also scored a perfect 6 in the category of “cleaning and repair of a malware-infected computer.” ### For further information about Bitdefender, please contact Anna Barnes Howorth Communications02 8281 3802 anna@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Bitdefender launches free, elite 60 second scanner for PCs 2012-12-04T00:26:00Z bitdefender-launches-free-elite-60-second-scanner-for-pcs SYDNEY/AUCKLAND– December 4, 2012 – Bitdefender, the designer of the world’s best antivirus software, has launched the free 60-Second Virus Scanner desktop app, adding a layer of elite cloud-based protection to PCs worldwide in an all-out assault on malware. The Bitdefender 60-Second Virus Scanner offers all PC users the confidence of knowing their system is checked by proactive, scanning technology that will pinpoint active threats. And it’s available for free, any time, at the click of a desktop icon. “With the 60-Second Virus Scanner, we aim to bring our top of the line technology to as many PC users around the world as possible,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi. “We’re convinced our free technology will impress PC users with its efficiency and silence. We expect a lot of people who use the scanner to find out that their existing antivirus solution isn’t catching everything it should.” The 60-Second Virus scanner works in conjunction with any antivirus software, allowing PC users to double-check whether their existing security software is doing its job. The 60-second Virus Scanner works silently, guarding systems in the background while users work or play, and sending real-time alerts as a threat appears. The cloud-based technology has virtually no impact on the user’s system. ### For further information about Bitdefender, please contact Anna Barnes Howorth Communications02 8281 3802 anna@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Spammy Scams: Spaniards win education, Americans win iPhones, Brits win life-altering lotteries 2012-11-29T01:30:00Z spammy-scams-spaniards-win-education-americans-win-iphones-brits-win-life-altering-lotteries SYDNEY/AUCKLAND– November 29, 2012 – What possible lure can be so appealing that it makes users forget all the advice they’ve been receiving from the security community for years and innocently open spam messages exposing themselves to all kinds of on-line threats? As it turns out, different scams target different nationalities lately. While Brits seem happy with enough money for a downtown London apartment down payment, Spaniards seem to be wooed by the promise of further education amid rampant unemployment and Americans still covet a free iPhone. Germans find themselves tempted by a life altering sum of cash, whereas, Australians are offered with pharmaceutical positions and educational courses. After scanning through spam and scams of recent months, here are some we found targeting specific nationalities: In the UK, scammers announce computer users in UK that they have just won £100,000.00. GBP (One hundred Thousand Great British Pounds Sterling’s) from the Coca Cola 125th Anniversary Award for which Brits have to send a scan copy of an identification document. Barclays, PayPal, and HSBC customers may get tricked with an old-school scam, namely “Check your account”. Brits were also bombarded these past months with apparently official notifications telling them of some “irregular” activity performed on their Internet banking account. Then there’s a customized British Microsoft and Facebook award that hints at a free Microsoft Windows 8 license to make the user open the attachment. Australians are tempted with job offers or qualification courses for pharmacy assistant positions. One spam wave offers to employ Australians to “receive items [small packages as parcels] from companies and stores as well as payments from [their] debtors in and outside the country on [their] behalf”. Considering the current work environment, chances are people in-between jobs and inexperienced young graduates fall for this trick. Enthusiasm can lead them right into the middle of a money muling - type scam where people are recruited to move stolen money and goods from one location to another, from one person to another until no-one can trace back to the identity of the cyber-crook or the original victim. On the same note, Australians are also offered “pharmacy assistant education classes and healthcare assistant degrees.” Other scammers poke around Australian cyber-space for “small retailers that look for stores in which to place their products”. Scammers ask the small retailers for confirmation that he ships products all over Australia and further demands details about “terms of payment” and ask receivers if they work with “visa or master card”. In New Zealand, users may fall for the “ATM MASTER CARD delivery” trick. Users receive a form which they are asked to fill in with identification data and choose the courier company they’d like to handle the delivery of their card. In return for a small fee, they are granted the card delivery in a 48-hour time interval. Germans were lured by the illusion of having just won a life-changing amount of money in the lottery. In order to pick up the EU915.810 prize, they are asked to open a PDF file and fill in their identification data. Other scams imitate online booking notifications from hotel.de and ask Germans to open an archived malicious attachment to confirm an alleged hotel reservation to a luxurious spa centre in Germany. PayPal notifications written in German invite users to type in identification information and send it to scammers. Poste Italiane clients continue to be hit up for critical data, while people in US are lured with vacations in Costa Rica and California, comfortable office furniture, luxury cares, and free Windows 8 licenses that prove to be stolen or altogether bogus keys or IPhone5 handsets at hard-to-say-no costs. There’s also an old Brooklyn vintage lantern with new led technology out there that shines up to 100,000 hours. With such targeted and diverse lures, it’s hard to imagine this kind of threat will fade away any time soon. There will always be someone who believes luck comes to those who wish for it, who inattentively type in their critical data into a phishing form, who innocently make money deposits for those in need. The article and screenshots of the scams can be found at:http://www.hotforsecurity.com/blog/spammy-scams-spaniards-win-education-americans-win-iphones-brits-win-life-altering-lotteries-4591.html ### For further information about Bitdefender, please contact Anna Barnes Howorth Communications02 8281 3802 anna@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. What you should know in preparation of Cyber Tuesday 2012-11-20T00:29:00Z what-you-should-know-in-preparation-of-cyber-tuesday SYDNEY– November 20, 2012 – Thousands of Australians will shortly want to partake in what has been advertised for weeks as “Australia’s first landmark national online sales event” – the Down Under version of the American Cyber Monday idea, as brought home by Australian Power Retail. Australians have spent $11.7 billion in online stores last year and the trend is rising, with users having spent more than $12 billion in the e-commerce sphere already by September, according to the National Australia Bank. That is good enough reason for scammers to do their best to piggyback on the upcoming event to make an easy buck. While retailers in observing countries are stocking their supplies in preparation for increasing demand, and computer users are checking the shopping list once again, scammers put out traps for those who forget about the safety checklist. Like all online purchases, making payments and choosing the suppliers makes all the difference between a successful online shopping spree that is worth waiting all year for, and a sheer disaster that can leave a bank account completely empty with nothing to show for it. Here are a few tips and tricks users should know when online shopping today: • Avoid purchasing while connected to an unprotected Wi-Fi network. If you need to refresh the web page for the product you want to buy to get the best price, it would be safe to use your phone’s or tablet’s 3G network. • Make sure you’re not getting phished. As usual, whenever national events such as Click Frenzy take place, phishers use discounts and coupons as bait to lure unwary users. They steer them towards spoofed web locations that look alike the original site to trick people into disclosing their credit-card details. Since most web shops now have SSL certificates to confirm their identity, a simple glance over the browser’s address bar will reveal whether you are on the right page. • Don’t shop from work, library, school lab or other computer not under your complete control. School labs and work computers can be equipped with surveillance mechanisms (i.e. keyloggers) that monitor the current user’s activity as per the fair use policy. You’d better wait till you get home or use your mobile device to place the order and pay for it. • Don’t underestimate the power of malware. This year’s most prominent e-threats are banker Trojans and rootkit-based malware. They mostly specialise in intercepting banking information, changing transactions and logging your account details while staying completely undetected. Make sure you run a 60-second QuickScan or a full system scan with your favourite antivirus. If you’re shopping from the family PC, use a secure browser such as the SafePay browser to go through check-out with full confidence that your credentials and transactions are not being manipulated. • Never buy products that are advertised through spam, regardless of how tempting the offer may sound. A legit business cares too much for its image to destroy it with a wave of unsolicited commercial offerings – if you get it, trash it. Or, if you have an antivirus solution with antispam, let it handle potentially unwanted advertisements for you. And always keep your browser, your software and your antivirus updated. • Online retailers need to scale the network up in advance. Cyber-criminals are usually exploiting the fact that online sales events are responsible for a significant percentage of yearly sales and target the online sales websites with a DDoS-type attack, as most server resources are already consumed by legit customers. ### For further information about Bitdefender, please contact Anna Barnes Howorth Communications02 8281 3802 anna@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Google Chrome App grabs identities, forges blogs in victims’ name to promote scam 2012-11-19T02:29:00Z google-chrome-app-grabs-identities-forges-blogs-in-victims-name-to-promote-scam SYDNEY/AUCKLAND– November 19, 2012 – A Google Chrome app that promises to change the colour of Facebook accounts instead nabs authentication cookies and generates dozens of blogs registered to the victims’ Gmail address, in a new scam analysed by Bitdefender, the leading global antivirus company. Once the malicious app is installed from Google’s Chrome Web Store, it starts displaying a large Google Ads banner redirecting users to a “work from home scam.” When clicking the sign-up link, users are redirected to a fraudulent website. “Scammers gave a new twist to the old change-your-Facebook-colour scheme that’s been luring users to fraudulent websites to grab credentials and other sensitive data,” says Chief Security Strategist, Catalin Cosoi. “By creating dozens of blogs for a single account, the scam spreads like wildfire among Facebook friends.” The blogs generating under the email address of the victims, which are used in further disseminating the scam, have registered a large number of hits among users in the US, the UK, Germany, Spain, Romania, and other countries. The app can also post wall messages on the victims' account. The messages use friend tagging to convince the victim’s friends to visit the blog domains. Each time the app posts on a users’ timeline, it links to one of the auto-generated blogs as to avoid blacklisting. Bitdefender encourages users to use an antivirus solution and the free application Safego, which protects Facebook and Twitter accounts from scams, spam, malware and private data exposure. ### For further information about Bitdefender, please contact Anna Barnes Howorth Communications02 8281 3802 anna@howorth.com.au About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software. Opera users exposed to Blackhole through browser homepage 2012-11-15T00:50:00Z opera-users-exposed-to-blackhole-through-browser-homepage SYDNEY/AUCKLAND– November 15, 2012 – For at least the last few hours, Opera users have been exposed to e-threats coming from the notorious Blackhole exploit pack. Earlier today, the Bitdefender automated scan systems alerted us to the fact that a malicious obfuscated script loaded by hxxp://portal.opera.com address redirects users towards a malicious page hosting the notorious Blackhole exploit. Most likely, the script has been loaded through third-party advertisement, a practice commonly known as malvertising. The hidden and obfuscated piece of code in the Opera Portal homepage inserts an IFrame that loads malicious content from an external source. If the Opera user hasn’t changed their default homepage, active malicious content is loaded from a third-party website (g[removed]750.com/in.cgi) whenever they open their browser. This malicious page harbours the Blackhole exploit kit (we got served with the sample via a PDF file rigged with the CVE-2010-0188 exploit) that will infect the unlucky user with a freshly-compiled variant of ZBot, detected by Bitdefender as Trojan.Zbot.HXT. The ZBot malware is on a server in Russia which, most probably, has also fallen victim to a hacking attack, allowing unauthorized access via FTP. Bitdefender detects the obfuscated script as Trojan.Script.478548; the offending page loaded by the Opera Portal was also blocked since the emergence of the attack via the cloud URL blocker. If you have any doubts about whether you have fallen victim to this stunt, you should run a 60-second QuickScan available on the Bitdefender Quickscan website. Windows 8 prone to infection by leading malware threats, controlled test shows 2012-11-09T00:18:00Z windows-8-prone-to-infection-by-leading-malware-threats-controlled-test-shows SYDNEY/AUCKLAND, Nov. 9, 2012 – Newly launched Window 8 is prone to infection by some 15 per cent of the 100 malware families most used by cyber criminals this year, even with Windows Defender activated, Bitdefender testing revealed. Windows 8, with Windows Defender running, was infected by 61 malware threats of 385 of the most popular malware samples in a controlled test carried by leading virus researchers over the past week. Another sample bypassed Windows Defender but crashed on execution, and another one ran but was blocked by User Account Control, so no payload was delivered. “As a means of protecting a computer from viruses, data theft and other type of malware, Windows Defender is better than nothing,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi. “But it’s not a whole lot better. Most of the popular antivirus can do better. The conclusion is clear: Using your PC without a security solution is extremely risky.” The malicious sample set consisted of the families of malware detected most frequently in the past six months by the Bitdefender Real-Time Virus Reporting System. A The malware that successfully bypassed Windows Defender was capable of granting backdoor access to the system, intercepting keystrokes, stealing online games credentials, and more. When tested without Windows Defender activated, the results were worse. Of the 385 samples, 234 ran successfully. Another 138 samples could not be started on the machine on various reasons, six e-threats executed but then crashed, and seven others launched but had their payload was blocked by UAC. “Even if the new operating system boasts a major overhaul in terms of visuals with the introduction of the Advanced UI, Windows 8 with the default antivirus solution activated registers alarming detections rates similar to the one registered by Windows 7,”said Bitdefender Chief Security Researcher Alexandru Balan. * * * About Bitdefender® Bitdefender is the creator of one of the world's fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified internet security software.
