From Melbourne or Sydney to LA, London and New York, AAPT’s Connected Cities program allows broadcasters, content owners and media agencies from all of the key media hubs to connect, transfer and store content. Built on a strong domestic presence, platform agnostic infrastructure and international connectivity using AAPT’s extreme performance network, AAPT’s Connected Cities program is delivered in partnership with BT Media and Broadcast. AAPT CEO David Yuile said the media industry in Australia was still evolving as technology was driving new consumer behavior and global content became increasingly accessible. “Strong partnerships are essential to complement AAPT’s Media Connect service and to satisfy the requirements of the global industry. BT Media and Broadcast, with its long standing reputation, capabilities and reach provided the ideal partner for us,” he said. VP of Global Sales and Marketing for BT Media and Broadcast, Mark Wilson-Dunn, said he was very excited by the new partnership with AAPT for the provision of media and broadcast network services to the fast-growing Australian market. “Our ground breaking MPLS-based IP media network, purpose designed for the broadcast of live television and large media files, is growing at some pace around the world, particularly in the Asian and U.S markets. “Joining this ecosystem will literally open up a world of opportunities for Australasian media businesses,” Mr Wilson-Dunn said. AAPT’S CONNECTED CITIES PROGRAM: The business of media has undergone massive transformation in the past few years with events now being broadcast in real time, globally, delivered across multiple platforms. Pre-recorded content is distributed and screened simultaneously across continents … there are no broadcast boundaries. Recognising the opportunities to utilise AAPT’s Extreme Performance network as the platform for world-leading connect, transfer and store services into and out of Australia, the company with its alliance partners is providing media organisations with the tools they need to collaborate domestically and internationally. By leveraging existing copper infrastructure and doubling the maximum speed available for Mid-Band Ethernet services, AAPT’s MBE is delivering a highly cost-effective, business-grade Ethernet service for metropolitan and regional businesses, without the need for fibre builds.AAPT CEO David Yuile said the new service provided speeds and features ideal for today’s rapidly-changing corporate requirements, particularly Cloud and IP Voice services, and supported the organisation’s extreme performance philosophy that applies across all business functions. “Our new MBE service enables AAPT to deliver the fastest access yet to our business and carrier-grade network, without the need for fibre builds. This advances our market-leading status in delivering Australia’s best possible Ethernet-over-copper service,” Mr Yuile said.“In 2007, we became the first telecommunications infrastructure company to deliver Mid-Band Ethernet with speeds of up to 40Mbps. We have now successfully improved our speed two-fold.“The significance of the new MBE offering is that customers can experience fast business connection without the need for fibre, minimising costs and maximising productivity yet with greater speed and flexibility than traditional DSL connections," he said. “As Ethernet is readily available on most existing routers and switches, customers are not hit with the extra connection costs and time delay associated with fibre.”Available in 219 exchanges today and covering over 740,000 businesses, AAPT plans to have the service available in 267 exchanges by the end of 2013. In anticipation of increased traffic on Tuesday night, digital agency Reactive www.reactive.com sought assistance from AAPT in order to better manage the demand from customers who visited their client sites www.brasnthings.com/ and www.generalpants.com.au/. AAPT worked closely with CDN supplier EdgeCast to migrate the sites onto AAPT’s Content Delivery Network (CDN) platform, a move that ensured both sites were able to stay live during the event. AAPT CEO David Yuile said it was thanks to the organisation’s advanced CDN capabilities that the sites remained live. “Bras ‘n’ Things and General Pants were able to offload all their site traffic to the CDN platform allowing larger computing capacity and were therefore able to protect their own infrastructure whilst gaining revenue,” said David Yuile.“The EdgeCast content delivery network optimises content for the fastest possible loading times regardless of the end user's location. In the case of ClickFrenzy, our CDN provided the flexibility necessary to accommodate flash crowds and surges in demand that many retailers failed to provide their customers.”Shoppers left comments on both sites praising the speed at which browsing was possible and stating that it was unbelievable they remained up and running despite the unprecedented demand and the virtual inaccessibility of other retail portals. Tuesday’s ClickFrenzy hype dissipated shortly after 7pm AEST as the host website buckled under the enormous demand from online shoppers. As a result, customers were forced to seek out ClickFrenzy deals from the respective websites of participating retailers and subsequently a number of these sites also failed to handle the demand. AAPT and Ciena launch Australian-first 100G inter-capital network 2012-04-02T23:01:00Z aapt-and-ciena-launch-australian-first-100g-inter-capital-network Sydney, Australia and Linthicum, Maryland, USA – April 3, 2012 – AAPT, one of Australia’s largest telecommunications carriers, and Ciena Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), the network specialist, today announced the first commercially-available 100 Gigabits per second (100G) inter-capital network, operating between Melbourne and Sydney. The 100G service, which launched on April 1, is powered by Ciena’s market-leading 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic™ coherent optical processors to enable delivery of 100G wavelength services. AAPT's internet, Ethernet and IP VPN customers can now connect at speeds up to 100G, satisfying the increasing demand for high-bandwidth capacity throughout Australia. AAPT CEO David Yuile said AAPT was the first telecommunications infrastructure company to market this service in Australia, providing such high capacity between inter-capital cities. "AAPT is responding to customers’ requirements for increased bandwidth mainly driven by cloud, storage and Internet usage. Three years ago, 1G was the usual customer requirement and now it is being replaced with 10G bandwidth orders. "The added attraction of this network upgrade is that it is on our shortest path, taking less than 5 milliseconds between Melbourne and Sydney. When you couple AAPT’s network capacity to this speed, it is a very attractive proposition for banks and financial institutions," he said. Ciena Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific, Anthony McLachlan said Ciena’s solution had allowed AAPT to enhance its network for additional capacity and at a lower cost. “This will give AAPT an opportunity to introduce new revenue-generating services, further differentiating it in a competitive market. “It is a key plank in AAPTs NBN aggregation strategy and will continue to support even faster, more resilient products and services to the enterprise market," he said. Ciena and AAPT have a long-standing relationship. In 2011, AAPT upgraded its network with Ciena’s next-generation Carrier Ethernet Service 5410 and 5150 Service Aggregation Switches.
