With such a fast growth rate, Webjet saw a need for an effective way to extend their reach beyond users of a single device without multiplying their implementation costs. A mobile presence was deemed necessary by Webjet in order to remain competitive in the marketplace. Readify has been a trusted software development advisor to Webjet for nearly a decade. Webjet are clear innovators in their industry and were already aware that the Windows Azure cloud platform may form part of their future strategy. Readify worked with Webjet to validate that Windows Azure could indeed handle their mobile workloads and be integrated with their privately hosted backend systems to create a viable hybrid-solution. Rather than expand their private hosting infrastructure to handle this new workload, Webjet chose to work with Readify to create a hybrid web application, targeting mobile devices including Windows Phone, iPhone and Android. Solution Readify built a mobile website in HTML5 using ASP.NET MVC framework to improve customer user experience and satisfaction by catering to the needs of the mobile user. Readify developed the solution using Microsoft’s Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools that gave Webjet complete and transparent visibility into the progress of the project. With continuous integration, deployment and unit testing, the Readify team was able to identify any regressions and address them immediately. Managing the whole ALM process through Visual Studio enabled the team to achieve high productivity gains and get to market faster. Benefits Increased Profits & Growth The increase of new traffic has contributed to Webjet’s 30 % growth in transactional values to $768 million for the year ended 30 June 2012. Competitive Advantage Webjet is a well-known brand globally, especially in Australia and New Zealand. By having a reach-focused mobile solution, Webjet is able get to the customer when they first consider booking travel, giving them an advantage over their competitors. Extended Reach to Customers Webjet’s newly developed mobile website now receives 8% of traffic and Webjet have a platform to expand and deliver more features and services through multiple channels. Webjet can now reach users on any mobile device that supports HTML5 and JavaScript and can dynamically scale to handle increased workloads. Cost Savings & Scalability Webjet regularly experiences sharp spikes in website traffic as a result of running special promotions, advertising on television and other various campaigns. With the new solution, Webjet look forward to taking advantage of the ability to scale up or down, depending on traffic; which in turn is expected to bring significant cost savings to the business. Webjet will also have the ability to absorb a pattern of usage, allowing for both proactive and reactive scaling. By developing the application on a reach-first mobile strategy , Webjet saves at least one third of the time and cost when compared to native development across all required platforms.   About Readify Australia-based Readify, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, has over a decade of experience addressing key customer challenges by developing solutions and deploying services based on Microsoft technologies. With the launch of Visual Studio 2012, Microsoft is providing tooling that targets the biggest makeover to the Windows operating system in two decades, as well as new technologies like mobile and tablet computing, cloud based applications, bring-your-own-device schemes, and touch based interfaces. The roadshow will take people through the thinking and industry trends that went into the design of Visual Studio 2012 line up.  It will also discuss the industry wide move to more agile processes such as Scrum and Lean/Kanban and how Visual Studio 2012 supports these modern development practices that help organisations to improve their responsiveness and stay competitive. Readify, which won the highly-coveted 2012 Microsoft Software Development Partner of the Year Award, notes that Microsoft's operating systems power nine out of every 10 computers in the world.  Just recently, Microsoft has confirmed that there have been 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in the first three days of release. Readify acknowledges that the mobile market is dominated by Apple Inc. and Google Inc.'s Android, with Android's success showing that consumers are interested in more than just a single brand of mobile device and are comfortable switching devices.  It notes that Microsoft has a proven ability to come to a market late and be successful. "The Xbox and Azure are great recent examples of Microsoft entering a market, playing the long game and iterating to success," says Richard Banks, Principal Consultant at Readify and Agile/ALM Technical Specialist. "The decision to change direction with Windows Phone 8 and tie it closely to Windows 8, combined with Microsoft moving into the hardware business via the Surface shows again that Microsoft are once again iterating their way to success." While we have seen that while organisations are following the consumer lead and putting into place adoption programs for iPads and Android devices, these adoption programs are often difficult, complex and generally tend to fail or fall well short of the hoped for goals, explains Australia's leading software development service provider. "With Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 organisations are considering these platforms as the most likely solution for bringing the tablet and mobile revolution into the enterprise, and for consistency many are also seriously considering updating their desktop environments to Windows 8 as well to provide a completely consistent experience regardless of device." It is with this track record that Mater's Software Development Manager recommended Readify to its Gastroenterology Department to help develop an application which assess and manages patients with hepatitis.SolutionReadify embedded themselves in Mater's environment in order to understand the current medical processes, shadowing the doctors in their clinic and observing how they treat their patients. This assisted in developing an application suited precisely to Mater's requirements. The project was delivered using a Readify Devpod, with Readify providing two developers (one onsite and one working remotely) to deliver an application in seven weeks.Devpods are based on a team-oriented project delivery capability, which combines a high performance development team using an Agile method (specifically Scrum). The team is augmented with tools selected from Microsoft's ALM platform which ensures that the team can accurately progress against development objectives.BenefitsEnhanced Treatment of PatientsBy taking the time to understand Mater's current practices, the team was able to influence the design of the application, which in turn enhanced how the patients were treated.Reduced Timeframe for Feature Development and DeliveryIn contrast to their experiences with Waterfall, Mater quickly noticed the benefits of utilising SCRUM. Specifically, quick feedback cycles in requirements gathering and feature development ensured that delivery expectations were met.Increased VisibilityLeveraging Devpod infrastructure meant that ramp-up time for the team was minimal, team progress radiated, and Mater always had an environment to explore what was being built. The weekly SCRUM stand-up meetings allowed for visibility, accountability and presentation of new features.Technology and MethodologyThe solution was achieved using the following technologies and methodologies:Microsoft Team Foundation Server was used for the entire ALM solution including Source Control Management, Scrum Project Template, Product Backlog, Work Item and Bug Tracking. The seamless integration with Visual Studio helped avoid switching between several applications to perform a particular task which allowed for greater productivity.SCRUM is an agile project management methodology used by Readify, consisting of Sprints and Iterations.DevPod - Readify Devpods exist to give our clients an alternative to traditional combative engagement models which lead to cost overruns, incomplete software and ultimately failed projects. This solution exposes an internal paper based system to the public through a web portal. Patients who would previously have to attend the hospital to fill in a registration form can now register online. The Mater team were working to tight timeframes and were using a hybrid process for development which was not working as effectively as the team would have liked. Two months into the development, not as many features of the application had been implemented as expected. This was recognised by Mater and when Readify joined, they were asked to help define a path and strategy to help improve efficiency as well as help out with the development.Readify helped transform Mater's development process into Scrum methodology. The agile transformation was not an instant change; gradual changes were applied to avoid confusion amongst the existing team members. The transformation started by removing the daily status updates and within two weeks structural changes were made to the source code. A product owner was assigned and the project requirements were defined into product backlog in Team Foundation Server (TFS).Readify mentored the Mater developers on how to use TFS effectively by utilising the productivity features available such as the Scrum template, product backlog, Source ControlManagement (SCM), work item and bug tracking. Readify also set up 'gated check-ins' in TFS to build integrated code and run unit tests to help the Mater developers understand how SCM and TFS work. The process changes made on the Patient Portal website team impressed the I.T. Manager and after discussions with Readify, they adopted Scrum (and Kanban) for some of their other projects.Readify's assistance with the development of the Patient Portal has helped the Mater Team to:Develop confidence in using TFS, not only as a Source Control Management Tool, but also utilising the available features such as the Scrum template, product backlog, work item and bug tracking as a result of Readify's mentoring.Speed up the release process. Release was an error prone, manual and time consuming process which would take around an hour to complete. With the team already using Team Build and Continuous Integration, an easier process was proposed using PowerShell script to deploy build results. PowerShell was used for continuous deployment allowing push-button deployment of the successful builds into Test and UAT and later production environments, in about one minute.Increase productivity by using TFS as an end-to-end ALM tool, minimising the need for several applications to perform a task.Minimise error and time consumption by implementing new refined processes such as push-button deployment using PowerShell scripts to replace a manual process.Increase team morale by providing a clear path and strategy to tackle the Patient Portal project.Technology and MethodologyThe solution was achieved using the following technologies and methodologies:Microsoft Team Foundation Server was used for the entire ALM solution including Source Control Management, Scrum Project Template, Product Backlog, Work Item and Bug Tracking. The seamless integration with Visual Studio helped avoid switching between several applications to perform a particular task, which allowed for greater productivity.Continuous Integration and Continuous Builds were achieved though Team Build which fits nicely with the agile development cycle and the check-ins process.Patient Portal allows patient information to be shared and contributed to by several organisations and medical systems capturing clinical information provided by external parties compiling the data into a single view of their medical history; WCF Web Services was used to integrate these different systems."The key benefits of using Readify to assist with our projects are around the flexibility of their offering, the methodologies they use to meet our needs and also the skills and knowledge of their staff and their ability to transfer that knowledge to our existing development team" - Steven Parrish, Director Information Solutions at Mater Health Services. For more information on Mater Health Services, please visit the website http://www.mater.org.au/For more information about Readify services, call +61 3 9600 2339 or 1300 666 274 (within Australia) or visit the Web site at http://www.readify.net/Via: WhaTech From King to Underdog: Why Windows 8 Presents an Unique Opportunity to Application Developers 2012-09-21T02:02:21Z from-king-to-underdog-why-windows-8-presents-an-unique-opportunity-to-application-developers The 'Internet Application Marketplace', if you want to call it using so many syllables, has been dominated by both Apple and Google for the last few years.  On the one hand, Apple has created a product - most notably the iPhone and Macintosh computer - that taps not only into the Internet demographic but into the mobile one as well.  Google, on the other hand, has almost exclusively focused their attention on creating Internet based application and API for browser-related endeavours (a result you can see magnificently displayed in the latest Google Chrome installation).Google and Apple are amidst one of the biggest battles of the Internet age, each on vying for software, product and ultimately Internet supremacy.  Application developers are revelling in the competition, enjoying the idea of having new and improved API opportunities on a monthly, if not weekly, basis.   And where is Windows in all of this?  Windows, because it came under much scrutiny (Vista, XP, ect,),presents a new and unique opportunity for application developers.Google and Apple are already tried and tested within the marketplace.  The competition is there and it is immense.  Windows 8, about to be released onto the world, is not and therefore has a lack of experience that makes the enterprise that much more accessible.Readify Leading the ChargeIn 2012, Readify, a company of application development specialists, was named a Microsoft Worldwide Software Development Partner.  This prestigious award is given specifically to application specialists who provide unique and innovative solutions for their clients.  The key word here is 'innovative'.  All new software is subject to a learning curve, as well as a new features that stymie or chanllenge the application development process.  Problem solving skills - and being able to think on your feet -are needed skills in the application development world, something that Readify exults consistently. The Windows 8 development services offered by Readify perfectly supplement the strongest aspects of the Windows 8 software itself.  For instance, consider a few of the following.Accessibility:  Windows 8 has been built with an idea of accessibility.  Moreover, the application template and development tools have been coded with such accessibility in mind.  Windows 8 provides developers with the appropriate testing tools in order for them to make sure their application is accessible.Gaming Studio:  If there is one thing that Microsoft has done well in the recent years, amid the growing fame of its competitors, is its video games.  Windows 8 has already been announced to be compatible with over 40 Xbox games, as well numerous other cross-platform opportunities.  Moving forward, the gaming industry looks to be one with some of the greatest potential. Tapping into this potential could prove to be a gold mine for application developers. What makes Windows 8 different for application developers?  Why should developers turn to a specialist like Readify?  Windows 8 is different because Microsoft are pushing the frontier and exploring new options within the realm of 'application possibility'. By merging accessibility with gaming opportunity, Windows 8 becomes a platform for just about anybody.   This may appear daunting to developers who have focused on specific niches before - and this is where Readify comes in.  Acting as a guide, a consultant and a teacher, Readify can help achieve all your application goals (and more).About ReadifySince 1999, Readify has been assisting organisations to innovate on the Microsoft Application Development Platform, helping them achieve the best results from their technology. The overwhelmingly positive reception for Windows 8 touch-screen tablets, hybrids and other devices suggest that the duopoly of Google’s Android and Apple’s IOS in the lucrative mobile devices market is being threatened.Although it has yet to penetrate mobile devices, Microsoft still has a larger user-base than both Android and Apple. Windows is still the top platform for computing devices, and Microsoft will continue to be dominant in the future with Windows 8.Windows 8 is designed to put all smartphones, tablets and PCs on the same page. Windows 8 works with a traditional mouse and keyboard and a touch-screen. Hence, the hardware choice will no longer be important as you can access the same content or make use of the same applications regardless of whether they're on a notebook, tablet or smartphone.Businesses large and small could rely on apps to ramp up sales, promote their products, and engage costumers and suppliers.Mobile apps can be developed in a variety of languages. You can develop a Metro style app using (i) HTML5, Cascading Style Sheets, Level 3 (CSS3), and JavaScript for web developers, or (ii) XAML, with code-behind in C++, C#, or Visual Basic, for developers who have previously written apps in Silverlight or WPF.Very few developers have experience building Windows 8 apps as there is still less than 1,000 apps in the Windows Store. Before embarking on the development of an app for Windows 8, organisations should consider a couple of things as both common tools have their advantages.Firms looking for a fast app that has basic features and that could easily port to other platforms could make use of HTML 5. Web-browsers built into mobile devices like the iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone are expressed in HTML 5. As HTML browsers are installed in every computing device, the app can easily be altered to work on other platforms.A large number of developers are already experienced in XAML as it is widely adopted in a number of Microsoft platforms, including the Xbox, Windows Phone, and Windows Desktop. For developers targeting only the Windows platform, using XAML would be better off as it HTML 5 still has its limitations. XAML has more advanced framework for UI development than HTML, despite the latter's future potential.Mobile device users prefer accessing a native app (app specifically designed for a specific platform like Android or iOS) because they provide more functionality and a richer experience. There would be limitations to what HTML apps can do since they have to access a device's hardware via the APIs exposed by the browser instead of APIs exposed by the proprietary platform or OS, thus compromising performance. Before investing in a Windows 8 app, the costs, their goals, their niche, and existing codes in place, among other things, should be considered.Contact Readify to discuss which language is right for your Widows 8 Development.About ReadifyAustralia-based Readify, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, has over a decade of experience addressing key customer challenges by developing solutions and deploying services based on Microsoft technologies.Clients over the years include Universal Music, the Victorian Electoral Commission, the Australia Post, Queensland Department of Education and Training, GraysOnline, The Australian Rugby Union, e-commerce site Tireweb, St George School, NSW, Queensland-based digital agency isnt media, Job network provider Workways, the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute (BCI NSW), The Queensland Department of Child Safety, startup business Webjet, business management solutions provider MYOB, and child welfare services provider Barnardos.Readify, awarded as Microsoft's worldwide 2012 software development partner of the year, is already working with their customers to help write Windows 8 apps for the Windows Store.
