The PRWIRE Press Releases https:// 2017-08-23T10:32:31Z The Next Generation Health Pandemic: How Family Wellness Holidays Could be the Answer 2017-08-23T10:32:31Z the-next-generation-health-pandemic-how-family-wellness-holidays-could-be-the-answer With worrying statistics that one in four children aged between 5 and 17 are overweight or obese[1], and aggressive marketing from junk food companies targeting kids on social media[2], it would appear there is a health pandemic amongst our youngest generation. To break the vicious cycle of unhealthy habits, Health and Fitness Travel, the wellness holiday specialists, urges that families need to provide healthy experiences to promote positive well-being for their children. From encouraging exercise and good nutrition, to taking active and healthy family holidays, parents can take small steps towards creating the foundations for healthy behaviours that will last their children a lifetime. With the winter soon ending, the start of the warmer weather invites an opportunity for implementing new behaviours and habits. Although schools have various healthy initiatives in place, parents need to do more to teach their children healthy eating habits at home, and model these behaviours themselves. Simple measures, such as portion control, limiting snacks, reducing sugar intake and involving children in the preparation of food are good first steps to making positive changes. Likewise, engaging in regular physical activity with your child will help them maintain a healthy weight, promote optimal growth and boost their confidence. At least 60 minutes of physical activity per day is recommended for children aged five and above, and presents a wonderful opportunity for parents to bond with their children. For parents looking to completely overhaul their family’s health, a family wellness holiday could be the key, where healthy eating, regular activity and joint meaningful experiences can kick-start healthy habits and create lasting memories. Research[3] has shown that children value family holidays more than toys and other material goods, demonstrating that parents should be saving their hard-earned cash for healthy travel experiences with their children, rather than the latest gadget. Family wellness holidays allow parents and children to enjoy extended periods of playful downtime together, away from the stresses of regular life, and can strengthen the parent-child bond. They also offer the perfect opportunity for children and adults alike to discover a new hobby or hidden sporting ability, which they can continue long after the holiday. Aside from the physical and emotional benefits outlined above, holidays are also believed to advance children’s brain development and improve concentration skills, demonstrating a clear link between holidays and educational attainment.   Health and Fitness Destinations for Families   Thailand: Soneva Kiri Nestled on the northern coast of Koh Kood amongst palm fringed hills and a secluded bay, Soneva Kiri offers an exceptional wellness holiday for the entire family. Call off the search, as Health and Fitness Travel, the leading experts in tailor-made wellness holidays worldwide, has trawled the globe to discover the most unusual spa therapies on offer. Here you can experience Chromotherapy, a technique using colours to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that encourage greater health and harmony. By cultivating the frequencies of individual colours to balance and re-shape the energy in our bodies, a greater level of physical and spiritual healing can be achieved. A blue light can promote relaxation and calm whilst aiding the recurrence of headaches and nervous tension, whilst pink eliminates impurities in the blood. Once you’ve discovered your favourite colour, head for the green, with luscious jungle, Japanese gardens and a world-class golf course all nearby.   Health and Fitness Travel (1300 551 353 healthandfitnesstravel.com.au) offers 7 nights at The Banjaran from $5,275pp or $7,400 for single occupancy. For a massage with a heartfelt difference, try their Himalayan Heart Stone Massage—a gentle, alkalising therapy using warm heart-shaped salt stones and pomelo oil to promote inner peace. The warmth from the stones will ease tense muscles and soothe aches and pains, while the stones’ positive ions are believed to rid your body of harmful vibrations and clear the air around you. You might even be lucky enough to experience out-of-body and astral projections. Once you’ve come back to earth, hit the ground running with a series of fitness activities, including kickboxing, beach boot camps and TRX training.   Health and Fitness Travel (1300 551 353 healthandfitnesstravel.com.au) offers 7 nights at Phuket Cleanse from $2,685pp or $2,980 for single occupancy. With the nose being the gateway to the brain, you’ll breathe easy knowing you’re healing your mind as well as your body, as you make the most of the holistic cuisine and advanced Ayurvedic treatments at this inspiring health retreat.   Health and Fitness Travel (1300 551 353 healthandfitnesstravel.com.au) offers 14 nights at SwaSwara from $4,245pp or $5,385 for single occupancy. The spa at Ananda integrates the traditional Indian systems of Ayurveda with contemporary western approaches, ensuring a truly unique spa experience. For a real eye-opener, try ‘Akshi Tarpana’, an ayurvedic treatment that involves applying ghee to the eyes to treat eye disorders or simply revive tired eyes. Whilst lying down, a ‘ring’ of flour paste is formed around the eyes into which medicated ghee is then gently poured, followed by intermittent opening and closing of the eyes. After treating the windows to your soul, turn your attention inwards with a variety of holistic wellness activities, including Yoga, Pranayama and meditation.   Health and Fitness Travel (1300 551 353 healthandfitnesstravel.com.au) offers 7 nights at Ananda from $4,700pp or $5,810 for single occupancy. This therapy, however, has nothing to do with smoking recreational ‘herbs’; rather, the burning of mugwort, a small, spongey medicinal herb, on various acupuncture points and energy pathways around the body. For those concerned about combustion, after the ‘moxa’ is placed on the body and lit, it is extinguished and removed before it burns the skin, producing a pleasant heating sensation. This treatment strengthens the blood, stimulates energy levels and boosts the results of other therapies. Once you’ve had your pyromania fix, unwind in Lefay’s salt water lake.   Health and Fitness Travel (1300 551 353 healthandfitnesstravel.com.au) offers 5 nights at Lefay from $3,600pp or $4,470 for single occupancy. Using the medicinal properties of red and black pepper to stimulate the breakdown of fatty tissue, this dinner table staple delivers a deeply moisturising and refreshing treatment. A combination of warm and cool techniques is used to tone the skin, followed by a firming massage to increase blood and lymph circulation which stimulates detoxification, to further enhance the treatment’s slimming properties. Finish off with a spirulina wrap and a dip in the thalassotherapy pool to feel thoroughly cleansed, toned and well-seasoned.   Health and Fitness Travel (1300 551 353 healthandfitnesstravel.com.au) offers 7 nights at Porto Elounda from $2,255pp or $2,840 for single occupancy. Some say married life can be more meaningful, but others say singletons have all the fun. While the answer undoubtedly hinges on the individual, science has, time and again, weighed in through copious research to measure whether one is better than the other, at least for your health. When it comes right down to long-term well-being, which of the two paths fare better? Hashing out about the matter, Health and Fitness Travel, provider of bespoke wellness holidays worldwide, dig deeper on the topic.   For Your Brain Let’s start from the top: our state of mind. Sure, sanity does not depend on whether or not we’re attached to someone in a binding contract. Nonetheless, according to a theory in psychology (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs), our basic needs demand a sense of belongingness, love, and intimacy. In short, relationships do matter to our mental well-being. So does this mean being married wins over single life? Robin Simon, a professor of sociology at Wake Forest University writes, “Married people report significantly fewer symptoms of depression and are significantly less likely to abuse substances than their non-married counterparts…marriage provides social support — including emotional, financial, and instrumental support. Also, married people have greater psychosocial (or coping) resources than the non-married—higher self-esteem and greater mastery." However, there are other means to experience a sense of belongingness. It could be from family, friends and or experiences. Take note: being single does not necessarily equate to loneliness and mental health is improved with relationships, whatever that means for you.   For Your Heart Heart check – the physical one, the one that beats and pumps your blood to keep you alive. As it seems, being single or married has implications that go beyond our figurative heart. A recent study from the NYU Langone Medical Center revealed that married men and women had a five percent lower risk of any cardiovascular risk [1]. Independent from the study, Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, director of women’s heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York says “As married people are more likely to help each other stay healthy, by making sure their spouse eats well, exercises, takes medications and helps in attending doctors’ appointments, married people tend to have less risk for heart disease.” But then again, what if it’s an unhappy marriage? Further studies declared that a distressed marriage exposes an individual to stress, leading to depression and in turn, affects heart health either directly or indirectly through unhealthy behaviors like smoking or drinking.   For Your Body ‘Letting yourself go’ after tying the knot or even a long term relationship has proven to be extremely influential on your waistline. Weight gains following marital transitions are a norm according to one Ohio state research [2]. “For someone in their mid-20s, there is not much of a difference in the probability of gaining weight between someone who just got married and someone who never married.  But later in life, there is much more of a difference,” said the lead author of this research. Is it necessarily a bad thing? Maybe not. For married couples, larger waistlines could actually reflect happiness. Another study [3] supports this claim explaining that on average, spouses who are happier gained more weight over time.  But then again, it’s not all black and white. Singles may also be joining the bandwagon with their likelihood to practice bad food intake leading to unhealthy dietary patterns when living alone [4] it’s easier to unashamedly enjoy lots of unhealthy take-away in the comfort of your own home in the age of digital delivery. So this one is a tie, both can be a risk factor for obesity but just like everything else, can bring you good or bad.   For Sleep If you’re sharing a bed with your significant other, you might find yourself waking up tired because of all the snoring, the blanket tug of war, mismatched body clocks, but you learn to roll with the punches because love and hey, you’re waking up next to the reason why you smile! True, couple sleep is not all a bed of roses but it’s not all snores and sheet-stealing either. Married life and having kids, in the long run, can be a challenge to having a good night sleep, but it can be easily addressed, from practical sleep adjustments to getting professional help. Embracing singlehood, one usually doesn’t have to compromise on sleep quality. A survey by The Better Sleep Council, found that a quarter of the coupled people got a better night's sleep when they slept alone [5]. While singletons can fair better in terms of sleep, the CDC reports that one-third of adults don’t get enough sleep anyway, regardless of their relationship status so this is an area of health you can focus on to improve your health, regardless of your relationship status.   For Longevity Although numerous studies have shown a strong link between married life and longevity, we can’t really say that having a marriage contract is a sure-fire way to increase your lifespan. While having someone to take care of you or do things like getting check-ups with and reminding you to take medication is a plus side of marriage, being single does not limit you from living a healthier and longer life. Research show that people who are single are also living longer than ever before. Maybe some forty to fifty years ago, men and women had the advantage because they have their spouse taking care of them, but now, it’s no longer the case. With full access to health care resources and support, the differences in mortality rates have radically decreased.   The verdict according to science: ‘Married’ wins Overall, statistics show that both singletons and married couples have health related advantages, but the main fact remains to be as happy in your current situation as you can, plus remembering that you can take responsibility for your own health and don’t need a significant other to live your best life!   Happy Valentine’s Day from all the team at Health and Fitness Travel – Need a solo escape or an active adventure to reconnect? As the niche sector of wellness tourism grows, it is becoming a trend for industry leaders to incorporate wellness components to their market, not just for the primary wellness traveler (where wellness is the main motivation for the trip) but also for the secondary wellness tourists or those who seek wellness experiences on top of their main purpose for travel. While the United States is at the forefront of this trend, other nations are catching up with countries like China performing strongly in the top 20 wellness tourism market ranked by revenue and Brazil entering the record for the first time, unseating Portugal. In 2013, Australia placed 16th and progressed to the 14th spot by 2015, taking a lead over wellness tourism front-runners like Spain, South Korea, and Indonesia. While it’s already a significant feat for revenues, data shows a much more robust development in wellness tourism for the country evident from the growth of both international and domestic wellness trip numbers. As of 2015, Australia is leading the charge amongst growth leaders with an 85 percent increase (from 4.6 million to 8.5 million) in wellness tourism trips from 2013. Not only is the country attracting many international guests, industry expert and co-founder of Health and Fitness Travel, Australia’s first wellness travel specialist, Samantha Lippiatt shares, “We’ve seen the local demand [for wellness travel] increase more than triple since our launch in 2014”, she adds, “Wellness travel is here to stay. Whether here or abroad, more and more Australians are keen to experience the benefits wellness travel”. Australia’s appetite for wellness-focused travel continues to be strong and growing. With an abundance of key wellness assets from its natural resources to private retreats and wellness practitioners, Australia stands as an evolving trailblazer in wellness tourism.   For advice and guidance visit www.healthandfitnesstravel.com.au or call 1300 551 353 _________________________ 1 Global Wellness Institute   -Ends- For further information and hi-res imagery please contact Raymond Viola; raymond@healthandfitnesstravel.com.au or call +61400 847 673 / 1300 551 353   Notes to Editors:     About Health and Fitness Travel   Health and Fitness Travel is a global luxury wellness travel company that originated in the UK in 2010 and is committed to providing healthy holidays that enhance and change lives. By offering an afternoon of complimentary activities celebrating the value of health and well-being at boutique wellness studio Bodhi & Ride to mark the day, Health and Fitness Travel, in conjunction with ClassPass stand united with hundreds of wellness organisations across the world from Turkey to Thailand to support proactive wellness. Global Wellness Day is based on the simple premise of increasing global consciousness of living a better life, even if it’s just for one day, by drawing a focus on healthier lifestyle choices. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number one health problem in the world is, surprisingly, not a virus or a disease but depression – an affliction, which is linked to sleeplessness, stress and obesity. The non-profit project created by Belgin Aksoy three years ago is being embraced by the spa and wellness world and has now also been accepted as a Global Wellness Institute initiative, and was celebrated in 73 countries last year. Belgin, who came up with an idea to combat depression and unhappiness by promoting the importance of living well, says, “We’ve honoured almost everything which is valuable to us with a special day, so why not have one that’s dedicated to the universally accepted importance of wellness?” Health and Fitness Travel Co-Founder Samantha Lippiatt and her team have come together with ClassPass and local Melbourne based wellness businesses including Matcha Maiden, Haus of Health, Golden Grind, MUD and Nourish Bowlz and more to host an afternoon of fun to celebrate, including wellness presentations, healthy refreshments, flow yoga and meditation at Bodhi & Ride in Port Melbourne. “Living a life with wellness at its core is the guiding principle of our organisation which is why we “Say Yes” to Global Wellness Day and are proud that many in our Institute network, including Health and Fitness Travel are embracing this important campaign,” said Susie Ellis, Chairman and CEO of the Global Wellness Institute. What is Global Wellness Day? The Global Wellness Day Manifesto helps promote a life of wellness, the campaign challenges people to change one aspect of their lives for a day and outlines seven steps to better wellness 1. Drink more water 2. Walk for an hour 3. Shop locally & eat organically 4. Stop using plastic bottles 5. Do a good deed 6. Eat a family dinner 7. Go to bed at 10pm  What will you say “yes” to today? As the business celebrates their second birthday this month; Co-Founder and Managing Director Samantha Lippiatt says; “Wellness travel is here to stay. It used to be that a holiday was a chance to overindulge and laze about, but now, most of us are focusing on improving our quality of life and embracing a healthy lifestyle and this is trickling over to our travel plans or even becoming the focus.” Established in the UK in 2010, Health and Fitness Travel is focused on shifting perceptions of healthy holidays into mainstream acceptance locally and it seems to be working.  Health and wellness tourism has now become one of the biggest growing sectors of the travel industry, according to the US-based Global Wellness Institute[1] and will continue to grow in popularity projected to grow by more than 9% per year through 2017, nearly 50% faster than overall global tourism,[2] wellness travel is not only here to stay, but is set to become the jewel in the travel crown. “Rising numbers of female millionaires and billionaires around the world may help drive a rise in luxury health and wellness holidays and women-only hotel services” says data provider, Wealth Insight.[3] Which is great news for the female Australian travellers who make up almost 75% of those already traveling for wellbeing, with most travellers seeking a healthy holiday alternative departing from the east coast; NSW (33%), VIC (30%) and QLD (17%).[4] As Australian’s become increasingly aware of the importance of staying fit and healthy, their holidays now reflect this trend, with an increase in enquiries and bookings for fitness holidays, yoga breaks and weight loss retreats. Expecting to see the numbers of Australian healthy holiday seekers continue to rise, Health and Fitness Travel, also predict an increase in active family adventures and ‘bleisure’ trips; mixing wellness with business for a better work-life balance. With wellness and fitness holidays undeniably on the increase, from aerial yoga in Thailand, beach bootcamp training in Bali, sub alpine hiking in New Zealand and surfing in the Maldives, people of all interests are now looking to utilise their precious holiday time to prioritise their health and fitness. The national non-profit association, Coeliac Australia, holds the Coeliac Awareness Week annually between 13 and 20 March to open the discussion about awareness of the condition and gluten-free living. According to them, Coeliac disease is affecting approximately 1 in 70 Australians with over 80% of this number remain undiagnosed. People living with this condition remain sensitive throughout their life. In this sense, it is incurable, however it can be managed with a strict gluten-free diet. Now you ask, how will I know if I have coeliac disease? Well, the only way to know is by getting tested. Your body will give you warning signs when you eat gluten. If you often feel gassy and bloated after consuming gluten-rich foods and often find yourself getting mouth ulcers, diarrhea or constipation, then those might just be the red flags for you to start consulting your physician. Other associated conditions can be as serious as infertility, pneumonia, and osteoporosis at a young age so it is best to get diagnosed early. There’s also the non-coeliac gluten sensitivity in which patients develop a variety of symptoms upon gluten intake. Many claim to feel better after removing gluten from their diet and further research is still being done to know as to why this is, but it’s always best to talk to your doctor if going gluten-free is the best option for you.
